I need to double check that so take what I said with a grain of salt. I know the other word is moddable. This depends on how that other word is used.

That's a welcome news, I guess.

The population of obnoxious posters needs reducing, there's too many of them.

Admin, the TC of this thread, your "GameSpot" link in the signature needs fixing. ;)

If the forums turn into that anonymous bullshit, totally sig-free, I'm out of here for good.

Why would they remove all of the character and personality of the forums, and turn to some by-the-numbers solution? One of the good things about System Wars is being able to easily distinguish each individual user thanks to their sig/avy. Having to glance at just a barebones name to make a distinction would become tedious and tiresome.

Even though it can be largely populated by fools at times, the SWs community is the thing I like most about Gamespot. For all the bickering and fighting, we're quite close-knit, like a small village where everyone knows everyone (but contains way more than just the one village idiot). That serves to strenghten the forum as a whole, as people feel connected and commited in a way. I have no idea why Gamespot would choose to go down this boring, lifeless road.

And, like BPoole said, if SWs get merged, then there's absoluely no hope of me staying here/coming back.

The best things in life are equal parts sweet and sour. That's the reason I liked the old ToU. . I figured we'd eventually strike our balance... I'll be skeptical for a while but but maybe something good will come out of it. Restrictions are kind of blah though.

I've been using the new layout and setting sigs/avis etc... The new layout isn't that bad at all... In fact there are some logical additions that make it have a nicer flow to it. The only reason you see the blank Ave is the same reason u see the G now for users who haven't set one. Currently the layout and user pages are really nice... To me.

So true... all things considered, SW is a great board, the sense of camaraderie here is extraordinary.

And yeah, if PGD and SW got merged, nothing good would come out of it. They're two different boards operating in a completely different manner. I have no idea who even thought of such a thing, makes no sense... but then again, lots of things don't make much sense here recently.

How did you manage that? Is there an option?

And I agree the format could use some updating, but not a total overhaul. The above just looks unrecognisable. Partly because it looks like every other board out there.

I was invited. I've played around a bit with it, responding to topics and such just to see how id like the flow of it... Once people get in and start creating sigs and avis and see how easy it is to bounce around the forums I think there will be some positive feedback. There will be some gripes too but yeah, blabs picture highlights grossness on the surface, but its not what it will look like.

super600

moron is actually more *offensive* than idiot if you trully look what people tries to insinuate when they call you that..so calling someone a moron is also moddable ?

Moron is moddable, but this depends on the context of the post.

I think that's pretty obvious considering that if it's not directly offending someone, then there is no problem. For example, i should be able to call myself a 'idiot, moron' or say 'shit' 'f*ck', whatever, to express a strong point of view, if such a particular situation in which i'll need that type of vocabulary should arise.

Obviously with a limit, otherwise i'm just a disruptive foul mouth jackass that deserves a ban.

But, if we're back to 'absolutely no foul language allowed regardless of context' then we're back to that ridiculously restrictive as hell type a bullshit that no other forum does, because it makes no sense whatsoever. We're not saints, and we're on the internet no less.

#217 Posted by organic_machine (9682 posts) -

I think moderations really depend on context. If you call me an idiot in the midst of a reasonable and on-topic post, I would not personally moderate that. Others might, but I wouldn't. If your entire post is just "you're an idiot" then it would be moderation worthy.

So I read this whole thread from the start. Now I have done nothing here mostly other than videos, read reviews, and have a good laugh here and there. But this is insanity. I have never seen a site/building/etc. run by a community with the community's though in mind be turned into something without their actual consent. From what i read it came out of nowhere, and despite the fact that the new site is not here yet the rules start NOW???? It's like saying Fvck you to everyone in that place.

Well it kinda has to be.

Either it's like youtube where anything goes, or we go back to the old old TOU, where the rules were strict and clearly written out.

Every time you try to aim for the middle, there's going to be moderator discretion.

that fact will unfortunately be the hot bed issue with any new and more strict ToU... Personally, I'd never advocate for more restrictions, in the forums especially, but then again I think we've got some pretty reasonable mods policing system wars. This place will be a shit storm though if people are being modded the way it was back in the day.

How would you suggest we aim for the middle ground then? Everyone's suggestion will be totally different. Everyone has a different idea of what rules should be and how rules ought to be enforced. Hence, moderator discretion has to exist.

It's impossible to run a forum that the community sees as a balance between rules and freedom without moderator discretion existing in some capacity. Call me crazy, dilutional, or whatever, but it's true.

But what we're trying to achieve with the new rules and site is a better and stronger community. If you have any concerns and criticisms for me, I will be glad to hear them.

There are really great and sensible additions to the way we use the forum and if getting used to a new "look" comes along with a functioning forum that is easy to use then Im on board. Don't get me wrong, I'm not fanboying the new forums... there are things I dont want to lose from this style forum, but if your basing your E-Rage on a single white background, no identity pic then you are placing uneeded anger out there for no reason.

The previous ToU was not fun in any capacity... You actually had to proof read your post before posting it, not based on what you said, but whether or not someone could perceive it as offensive... that is NOT a good gamespot. I like what they are doing with the 3 strike policy actually, but the feeling of a looming big brother will not make people happy.

I'm not sure why they would ban anyone for anything short of criminal threats. to be quite honest. They have no grounds besides "but people's FEEELINGZ!?!?!?!?" to moderate otherwise. The staff of this website shouldn't be trying to protect people from offense. People should know when enough's enough and turn the computer off.

Do we have to walk around eggshells until it's officially released?

It certainly can. I've visited many forums (as well has online game servers) that I felt had those kind of issues.

One of the things I hope to achieve as a moderator going forward is better communication with the users of the site. I want to minimize those potential issues as much as possible. So if you have any concerns of criticisms, PM me.

Sure starting this well. :| This whole load just seems like empty promises. And I can't blame you guys, because you are volunteers and will lose your position if you spill the beans. But hey, if I were in your position and the users were crying out, I'd spill it, I spill it all and GS would have my ass canned and I'd be happy.

well sure... that's true in theory, but I'd gather that Gamespot doesnt want to allow a sess pool reputation build around their forums... That I get, but what doesnt sit well is that restrictions to posting hurts those that are respected among the community, where the trolls getting banned is a dime a dozen. Imagine a well respected community member being modded three times in a 60 day period based on 3 questionable incidents... that's not gonna go well.
