What games of this gen, flawed, people talk shit about you will defend like a Samurai who's honor has been tread upon?

-

- Shitty Sam Fisher

- Controls are garbage compared to originals

- No light/sound meter

- Dumb ass scripted missions with forced combat

- The same type of enemies regardless of location (nonsensical)

- No hacking "press X" dummy

- Dumb ass leveling up mechanics

+ Genuinely viable to be played as both fast action and methodical stealth

+ Some really well designed levels that are both open nature, while simultaneously tightly focused

+ Perfectly balances SP/COOP

+ It is almost a laundry list of "shit we must fix" from Conviction

+ Shit tons of gadgets

+ Enemy locations change each load

+ Not some angry man revenge story

+ Other things I can't be arsed typing

This ain't no Splinter Cell 3, but it's still a respectable Splinter Cell, better than a good few of them.

Yet, game, that sold under Ubisofts expectations, and people talk shit about it like it's on the level of Conviction. Which is morally wrong.

Yeah, Blacklist was cool. We could've been off so much worse.

The Last Guardian comes to mind . It's an easy target for the controls , camera , framerate , Trico issues , being an adventure game and exclusive , BUT WOW , it was one of the best experiences this generation and an all-time favorite. Trico is one of the most ambitious things I've seen attempted in a video game.

@Nike_Air: agreed, I'll remember my time with TLG forever, whereas a lot of games are just a passing experiences in my consciousness even if they are still fun and may have fewer flaws.

Yakuza Dead Souls.

Just turn controls to type B and it's Resident Evil 4 on PS2.

Sea of Thieves. Serious lack of content at launch, but has since turned into one of my favourite games this gen.

An answer that's more in line with what the OP is looking to get...

For Honor:

  • A year of connectivity issues
  • Steep learning curve
  • Limited customization initially
  • Reliant on having a group of four willing to communicate and work together required to play online versus.
  • If above isn't met, odds are you will be thrashed
  • Single player campaign is little better than a crap tutorial
  • 15k steel to unlock extra warriors

I can't really defend a game that's drastically flawed to other people. That's why a guilty pleasure is a guilty pleasure. I rather just enjoy it as opposed to spending time justifying it to other people.

Days Gone comes to mind... It got slaughtered by the video-game industry (6/10 Gamespot, 6.5/10 IGN) but I think it's a great game. 20 or so hours in.

Other than that, DMC2. I think it was indeed the worst DMC game, but no where near as bad as reviewers have it.

I'm not sure it really fits your criteria, but I liked Murdered Soul Suspect. Base game was fine, just needs a lot more added to it.

Days Gone is great, but it's really repetitive and to me it has a bunch of other flaws:

-Main character is really hard to like
-Hordes are cool but there is no effective way of battling them

I really like the setting though and the fact that you and your bike are going through this zombie infested place.

Twisted Metal PS3

Yeah the online was botched at launch and the controls were hard to get used to, but I love vehicle combat and the core game play was great.

I would say Ryse. There are legitimate reasons why the game is bad but it got s*at on mostly because of the early X1 stigma when games with similar mechanics and flaws were hyped and praised to high heavens.

I hated the turret sections and testudo sections, because they could've been done so much better.

But I loved pretty much everything else: the main character, the setting, the story. Playing as a roman soldier is dope as all hell.

I really wish it got a sequel so we could at least see the flaws of the first one ironed out.

Any of the Piranha Bytes games...Risen, Gothic, and ELEX. They're so damn hokey, buggy, and maddeningly and unnecessarily difficult, and yet...they're fun.

They are made by professional developers who seem to lack a quality control department. Or a budget. And yet...they're fun.

Sure, you might wash up on a beach and get killed by a large flightless bird or boar in a manner of minutes because it stunlocks you, and yet...the game is still fun.

It has this quality to it where, idunno, I become smitten by it. It's a kind of "it's so ugly it's cute"...like a pet pig or something. But really if you give the games a chance, you're rewarded with some really great, immersive gameplay. Gothic 3 especially, and Risen to an extent.

Btw, FFXII zodiac age. Its a remaster, Vann sucks ass, and license board sucked but its the best Final Fantasy, ever.

The Last Guardian. It might be worst than most games but it's special, like Knack 2. I'll shit on Spider-Man and Death Stranding, and praise HZD as I shit on PS4, but I loved TLG and Knack 2.

I replayed most of the Twisted Metal series recently, and was surprised to find myself having most fun with PS3. I think the story mode kinda turned me off to it back in the day, but when you skip that and just jump into a deathmatch it's great.

Bushido Blade 2 comes to mind. Sure it's not as deep as the first game, but the faster pace of the combat actually makes the multiplayer more enjoyable. Not that I even have to defend this much. Of the already small pool of individuals who actually remember Bushido Blade, half of them don't even know there was a second game.

I've just been playing pretty flawless games this gen..

I can defend Sea of Thieves at least. That game is very short on content. But I defend it, since it's fun. Games should be fun. If they are, they're good. It would suck if I didn't have friends to play it with, though.

@R4gn4r0k: To be honest, I think the 6-6.5/10 scores it received are practically 100% spot-on. It's just how the gaming industry has usually destroyed their review scale. 6 is meant to be decent, 7 good, 8 great, 9 absolutely outstanding and 10 should be perfection. Moving downward on the scale; 5 should be "okay", 4 = below average, 3 is bad, 2 is really bad and 1 is unplayable garbage.

And Days Gone is a decent, pretty good game. repetitive and boring story/characters yes, but you can enjoy it. Great graphics, looks really good on a 110" 4K screen.

But...

This is how reviewers review games:

10 = masterpiece

9 = excellent

8 = relatively good

7 = pretty bad

6 = terrible

5-1 = utter trash.

Agreed with almost everything you said about Blacklist. It's a pretty great stealth game when it's not caught up trying to be something else.

I guess I might go with Anthem. I have no interest in grinding for hundreds of hours, so I'd much rather play Anthem with its wonderful mobility than same old cover shooter that is the Division.

@Mozelleple112: I agree with your scoring system. I think 6-7/10 games can be well worth playing.

To me the visuals and performance of Days Gone are the biggest problems. It's upsvaling technique causes a blurry image and the game runs very choppy on a Pro. I'd rather have 720/60 with no upscaling.

I'll go in to bat for Days Gone. Just got the Platinum last night and still keen to keep exploring that world.

Game is one of the most buggy games I have played in a very long time, even after all the patches!

It is LONG which I can see would be a factor for those trying to review on a tight time frame.

For me, I haven't played all the latest open world games like Far Cry or Assassins Creed Odyssey so I came into DG without that fatigue and I have come away absolutely adoring it, warts and all. Personally I feel its a 8.5/10 game compared to all the 6's it got.

So happy it has sold well so that we will very likely get a sequel on PS5. The game looks stunning on my pro so I can only imagine what Bend could pull off next!
