I'll be glad when Sony is gone, they have brought nothing to gaming really

I won't be glad because that means for consoles all I will have is nintendo. I refuse to buy another xbox until that thing is out for years and is proven to not break on you just by looking at it and if they are still cheaply made, then I just will never own it. I feel so burned by MS this gen, with replacing console after console, paying for stupid online, I have had it with them.

You clearly are a young gamer, that knows NOTHING about gaming. Sony released the first playstation after Nintendo trew away the idea of a CD 32bit SNES expansion. Sony made a market for the adult and adolescent gamer that didn't like to get stuck with very expensive PC's (we are talking the late '90 here) in a time when internet was something most of us could only enjoy in cybercafé's. It was a leap in technology that gave us a beautiful 1998, 1999 and 2000. The PS2 was the world's first DVD player on the market, again a major leap in technology, and brought great new games and ideas. With PS3, Sony made a daring move. While I agree that it wasn't the most tactical move, PS3 still brought us many new IP's and ideas, while the opposition brought nothing but sequels to a few original IP's, yes, I'm even talking about PC gaming. If Sony stops the gaming brand, I'll stop gaming. Simple as that.

I agree with you. But the unfortunate side of the argument is that Sony is in a lot of financial trouble right now. Games matter, but a company has to maintain profitability to continue making a product. Look at the Dreamcast...great games, terrible marketing.

Everything that Sony has touched this gen has turned to garbage. The PS3, the Vita, PSP GO, Xperia line of phones, their PS phone, their TVs. Absolute failure. Can the cows not see this? Is their a shroud of fog covering their eyes. Open your eyes already. Sony brand is damaged badly. The very existence of Sony is being leveraged right now as we speak in the world of Business.

Did sony steal your lunch money??

The ps3 started out dead last and is even with the 360. As for the tv's your a joke sony has the only 4k hdtv that I know of. The vita is the best hand held and already has some AAA games for it. The other stuff I don't know if it was any good who knows it might have been rubbish. In general if you buy electronics from sony it is money well spent. I still have a sony gdm-fw900 24 inch monitor hooked up to my gaming pc and I have yet to see a better picture on the new led monitors at any price. The only bad thing about sony is the price other than that every sony product I ever brought has been kick ass.

Did Sony give you lunch money?

I just find it funny that you and others use the "did company x steal your lunch money" and then continue to defend company x as if they gave you something, it's just hypocritical. There is nothing wrong with bashing a company you feel is garbage assuming you actually own their products and have some credibility. I assumed jimmypsn owned at least one Playstation brand product, if I am wrong oh well, for a troll he is very quiet around here. #162 Posted by -ArchAngeL-777- (3786 posts) -

Right now, Sony has the most diverse platform, especially exclusive IPs. They are taking the most risks between the 3 companies and most of those risks have paid off. The last thing console gaming needs is to have to rely on the ultra safe mode business models of MS and Nintendo. You'd basically have an entire industry relying on milking 5 annual IPs...Halo, Mario, Zelda, Forza, COD. Maybe EA throws their hat in with more Battlefield. Either way, someone like Sega would have to step up, get back in the HW game, and break the mold of monotony.

#163 Posted by -ArchAngeL-777- (3786 posts) -

Maybe Valve takes Sony's place. Who knows. All i know is we need at least one risk taker in the game. If Sony was out with no one to take their place, I would move on to PC gaming exlusively.

I have the same issue with XBL. I own all the consoles as well. I use my PS3 everyday to movies and Netflix on it for my daughter. Can't remember the last time I actually played a PS3 game though. I'm not a MS apologist and while I agree that they haven't brought much beyond what you mentioned to console gaming; you also must give them credit for DirectX and the Windows OS. These are both staples of PC gaming. I do not like their practices though.

fearing the risk of being attacked by giant crabs, i must say that several of the highest scoring games of all time include the likes of gta3, uncharted 2, tony hawk 3, mgs2, devil may cry, mgs3, mgs4, and god of war. these all debuted on sony systems.

Not to mention many other now-multiplat titles like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Devil May Cry, etc. Also, Sony was the first console to really make an effort to bring niche foreign titles to market with the PS1 that probably would have never come over in the past. A trend which encouraged a lot of new gamers to get into RPGs, but also encouraged the rise of rythm games. Not surprisingly Guitar Hero was also originally a title Sony made popular.

I was waiting for you to respond... so here's my counter-response:

Compact Disc and CD-ROM -Sega Mega-CD

  • Sony first released the Compact Disc in 1982 and the CD-ROM in 1985, long before the Sega CD. And for the record, the first console with CD-ROM support was the NEC PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16, which supported the format since 1988, years before Sega CD.

Grip handle (PlayStation Controller) -N64 Controller came first

  • The PlayStation first released in 1994. The N64 first released in 1996. It was Sony that introduced the grip handle to game controller design.

Dual analog stick control (Dual Analog Controller) -Analogue sticks had been around for ages, but yes they added one more.

  • Dual analog stick control is the format used by the majority of AAA games today.

Built-in force feedback (Dual Shock) -Copying Nintendos Rumble pack - but it was built in - an amazing leap! not.

  • Not an amazing leap, but still a minor innovation.

DVD and DVD-ROM (PS2) -Great for movies!

  • The vast majority of video games on the Wii and both Xbox consoles have been released on DVD-ROM.

Broadband connectivity (PS2) -True but MS released a much better service at approximately the same time and obviously PC had it before. Hardly innovation, more evolution.

  • PS2 released two years before Xbox, therefore PS2 was the first console with broadband connectivity. And we are talking about consoles here, not PC.

Motion-detecting camera (EyeToy) -Both Sega and Nintendo had 'motion' technology out long before this. Regardless, it was innovation even if it was irrelevant to any self respecting gamer.

  • I don't mean just any motion technology, but specifically the motion-detecting camera (i.e. the basis for Microsoft's Kinect), which was first introduced to consoles by Sony. The only precedent I can think of is the 2000 Konami light-gun shooter Police 911 in the arcades.

Blu-Ray (PS3) -Great for movies!

  • Blu-Ray allows much greater capacity for video games than the DVD (itself another Sony innovation).

I agree to a point. I do not wish Sony to go away but they really have not brought anything. They have had some good games but that is because of the developers not Sony. Naughty Dog for example was making some great games and Sony bought them but it is not like Sony the company made those games but instead it was the people from Naughty Dog.

CanYouDiglt

Listen to what you're saying as it sounds too stupid. If this was the case no console should be here because the mass majority of games are 3rd party. Especially MS!

That is not true. Nintendo has many great games from studios they formed and not bought already formed studios. 343 is a recent example of a studio made. There may be successful studios Sony has formed but I do not know them. I am just saying Sony did not create its great games they were from studios formed before Sony bought them.

Polyphony Digital is the company that Sony formed. They were members of Sony Japan Studio then after they made their 3rd game Gran Turismo; Sony allowed that team to move to another studio and they named themselves Polyphony Digital.

Out of the studios that Nintendo has the only two they didn't form were HAL Laboratory (Nintendo purchased them when Iwata became president) and Monolith Soft.

All the other 1st Party Nintendo developers were formed by Nintendo.

#193 Posted by 1080pOnly (1986 posts) -

I was waiting for you to respond... so here's my counter-response:

Compact Disc and CD-ROM -Sega Mega-CD

  • Sony first released the Compact Disc in 1982 and the CD-ROM in 1985, long before the Sega CD. And for the record, the first console with CD-ROM support was the NEC PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16, which supported the format since 1988, years before Sega CD - Sony didn't invent the CD at all however. Sony and Phillips licensed the idea together from it's inventor. So not only did they not invent it, they didn't bring it to gaming first either.

Grip handle (PlayStation Controller) -N64 Controller came first

  • The PlayStation first released in 1994. The N64 first released in 1996. It was Sony that introduced the grip handle to game controller design - Correct, my bad - it was the NES Max controller that had them first.

Dual analog stick control (Dual Analog Controller) -Analogue sticks had been around for ages, but yes they added one more.

  • Dual analog stick control is the format used by the majority of AAA games today. Granted, but not something Sony designed themselves.

DVD and DVD-ROM (PS2) -Great for movies!

  • The vast majority of video games on the Wii and both Xbox consoles have been released on DVD-ROM - Not really sure of the point here, DVD's are a good format and and did first appear in a Sony console but are really just an evolution of the Optical Disc.

Broadband connectivity (PS2) -True but MS released a much better service at approximately the same time and obviously PC had it before. Hardly innovation, more evolution.

  • PS2 released two years before Xbox, therefore PS2 was the first console with broadband connectivity. And we are talking about consoles here, not PC - Actually we are talking about PC. My original post clearly states gaming, not console gaming. It mentions operating systems as well. Sony got something to market first but it was a natural evolution from the PC - Also the PS2 released a year and a half before the XBOX but did not come with the adaptor as standard, unlike the XBOX. It was a much later hardware revision that added it in.

The only precedent I can think of is the 2000 Konami light-gun shooter Police 911 in the arcades - Ok, not really going to argue this as I don't see it as anything worthwhile being brought to gaming.

Blu-Ray (PS3) -Great for movies!

  • Blu-Ray allows much greater capacity for video games than the DVD (itself another Sony innovation) - Blu-Ray is not a Sony invention at all, in fact it is part of a major conglomeration of manufacturers. It was put in the PS3 not to improve games but to win a format war against it's competitor and is backed by people like Disney and Time Warner. In fact hardly a single company involved in the making of Blu-Ray has anything to do with gaming at all and Sony pushed it more for it's film division than anything else. It could also be considered part of the failure of Sony this gen by pushing up the cost of the console and delaying it's release. Show me how Blu-Ray has improved gaming beyond uncompressed audio and long movie scenes.

Microsofts brought Xbox Live subscription, Third party marketing clauses e.g COD and last but not least Halo overdoze. Now im no hater but when you point out one companies flaw, you have to point out another especially as you mentioned them in yourbrought more to the table.

As I have said previously in this thread I'm not a fan of MS or their current direction either. However, I cannot help but give them credit for designing and supporting DirectX in Win95 and keeping PC gaming alive because of it.

As regards the Live subs, I'd say it's a point of contention. They did bring the best service, they have forced Sony to up their game in that regards and it IS part of what is making the 360 profitable. Without the profit MS could be in Sony's position. If you don't care about online gaming you can choose not to pay and use all of the other features for free so it isn't like a subscription service to use the console.

Sony realised this and brought the + service to the table. Considering that their online service is weaker they offer games for 'free' as the hook.

Good father of heaven, did you just compare Xbox Live to PS+?, also what with all this Sony online being weaker BS i keep hearing. Im not an avid online gamer but i game online alot and so far i have not experienced anything different with both, yea my friend has an Xbox where i played Halo4 n MW3 on.

Also keep in mind, the PS2 had an avid online fanbase with SOCOM series, honestly im of the opinion you are not well versed on the points you are trying to validate. In a recap, you would want Sony to leave gaming and just Nintendo and Microsoft has the only competitors, i duno bout you but i would invest in a Japanese made electronic device over an American one anyday, yea it sounds biased but its a COO (country of origin effect, google it), especially given the Xbox360 red ring fiasco which forced me to not buy anymore of their systems, id say the COO was on the money. Also theres something bout American firms capitalist brains that disgust me n perhaps thats why its not suprising when Microsoft can charge for a component of the game that should be free as written on the box worth $60

Console gaming as a whole has done nothing but hold back gaming in general, but between all the consoles I'd say that Sony inovated the most in terms of the game quality.

Uncharted 2, Demon's souls, Metal Gear Solid and a few others all very much provided a standard for games now.

Microsoft did more but last generation with Halo, they haven't changed much this generation.

Also theyre very much over priced, their accessories and online interations is ridiculous.

I didn't read the whole thread so I don't know if it's been mentioned but Sony brought dual analog sticks to gaming. You know, the primary input for modern day console shooters.
