Most people tv's are not calibrated and in poor lighting areas in random setting distances. The quality of the display needs to also be factored in. All 1080p sets are not the same. That said all thing being equal a person with 20/20 should be able to tell 1080p from 720p.

The average person who picks up a game and pops in the disk probably doesn't even have much of a grasp on resolution tbh. That said, I can certainly tell and this is just straight up false. But you know, the X1 wouldn't have trouble rendering in 1080p if they turned down all the shit blur, post processing effect and didn't aim for games that look pretty in stills but run like a fucking slide show AKA the 7th generation of gaming.

Sigh. This is serious denial. 720p doesn't look horrible, but it can easily be distinguished from 1080p if you do not have cataracts.

You'd think these people would be knowledgable on the products that keeps them to have a job.

720p upconverted looks soft vs a native 1080p signal on my display. Rez is not everything a calibrated 720p plasma is going to look better than your walmart special 1080p hdtv. At the ces 1080p oled tv looked better than the 4k sets on display IMO.

Still this is a op to downplay the advantage of the ps4 over the x1 this entire console gen. If you repeat a lie often and long enough most people will accept it as fact.

I had 720 monitor 22 inches when i switch to a 1080 one the difference was night and day what are these fools talking about

I can't tell the difference between 30/60 FPS or 720/1080p ...they're all just numbers to me.

1080p > upscaled 720p > 720p, no matter how you slice it.

Also, back when i had a 40in TV i could still tell the difference between them, doesnt have to be 50in.

Of course all of my TVs are calibrated properly with a super high contrast ratio.

Those crappy 2000:1 walmart TVs cant display the difference.

TV's these days have such wide amount of native contrast that calibration is irrelevant. That was only needed back in the day around 2005-2010 when LCD's and Plasmas were highly dependent on dynamic contrast to trick people into thinking that it looked good. They still do it with the cheap ones though.

I guess, cause for me being ~10ft away from my TV I don't notice framerate or resolution unless they are very bad.

IGN should be embarrassed to even allow that video to stay up. It has an overwhelming number of dislikes on YouTube so they are not fooling their audience.

You do not need a 50" TV to tell the difference. Also telling people to "suck it" shows how unprofessional those losers are. And they all look like dorks.

It just makes things easier but I have yet to own a tv that was perfect out the box. Even the movie mode usually the best mode needs to be tweaked.

The bulb in my 1080p projector exploded today, so I hooked up my old 720p one while I wait for the replacement lamp to be shipped. The difference was immediately obvious. Even though the old one was brighter (because the bulb had fewer hours on it), it was clearly not as sharp a picture. And we're talking the same brand, same model projector, just one's the newer version.

I think it's counter productive to gaming to focus on everything achieving 1080p, I much rather them use the extra power in the PS4 over the X1 to achieve other graphical advantages, like superior lighting/shadow or physics effects, particles, or destructible environments. I don't argue 1080p looks better than 720p, but I question whether that benefit outweighs other potential graphical advantages that might be achieved maybe using a lower resolution. I really have no idea to what extent that would be possible, but I feel we might never know if the community demands 1080p/60fps before everything else.

It's only trivial if your playing on a crappy display or have bad eyes. The part that really hurts is the ps4 is 100 bucks cheaper. So you save money and get better graphics. Unless you hate saving money and getting better graphics the ps4 is the best choice.

720p 27 inch PC monitor will look better that any 40inch and higher 1080p screen.

I've got a 37inch bravia and I can def tell the difference between 720p and 1080p.

Those guys know that what they said is total bullshit, it's just they have their tongues stuck up MS's ass and are helping out with the epic damage control MS has had to do since the very first day they unveiled that piece of shit called Xbox One. Anyone with half a brain can tell the difference between 1080 and 720, and if you can't you have bad eyesight or a POS TV...or both.

What a joke. Yeah I can tell the difference. I play on 160" PTA 8000 projector. 720 looks like crap. I will be upgrading to a 4k projector within a year. Microsoft flopped with the xbox 720p.

Try gaming on a 720p computer monitor compared to a 1080p montior. Then compare that to a 1440p and 4k monitor. Sub 30" and there is an obvious difference in quality.

Granted, the Unlocked crew is catering to their group - it's what they do, just like the Beyond does to theirs. Albeit Miller and Moriarty are genuinely more interesting to listen to and straightforward about who their broadcasts are targeting.

As far as sites that claims to hire professional journalists go, IGN is probably the least professional site out there.

TotalBiscuit sums up what i think of IGN in a recent video pretty well (13:00 onwards if the video doesn't start there). They might as well be a PR wing for some of these companies with the amount of promotional crap they come out with. Unboxings usually aren't the mark of a critique site.
