Sony came to IGN's offices with four Vitas all running a near-final western build, which allowed us to play four-player ad hoc, though Freedom Wars can also be enjoyed online, playing with people around the world, or solo, using capable AI bots in place of human-controlled allies. Better yet, Sony allowed us to capture direct feed footage of Freedom Wars, which you can see in the video preview embedded above.
Combat in Freedom Wars is frenetic. When you take into account that four people will be fighting at once, along with their four Accessories, you'll encounter controlled chaos during battle. With all that's going on -- eight characters, at least one Abductor and sometimes more, plus lesser enemies populating a map -- Freedom Wars runs surprisingly well. And even if the chaos can be distracting, it's smartest to focus on what you're trying to do. And as you'll find out when you play Freedom Wars, you'll have plenty of options during the heat of battle.
Abductors are everywhere, constantly running amok. Different types of Abductors have different kinds of attacks, and different parts of their bodies are susceptible to damage. Carefully aiming the Thorn allows you to take these parts of their bodies out, either by climbing up to that area and slashing at it, using your Thorn to damage it directly, or collaborating with your partners to use everyone's Thorns to bring an enemy down to the ground, leaving it exposed for massive attacks.
Balancing the harvesting of new items to create new weapons and gear, as well as strengthening what you already own, must be carefully balanced with shaving time off of your sentence and purchasing new Entitlements. All of these features of Freedom Wars seem to be interconnected delicately, yet intimately. You can't get far in the game without keeping a close eye on all of the spokes of the wheel, dedicating resources to making sure that you're progressing in all facets of the game as you climb higher and higher through the Panopticon's eight levels, and ultimately towards your freedom.
Freedom Wars is due out October 28. Who is hyped, ya'll? I sure am.
