IGN damage controls overheating PS4's!

Brand new next gen hardware built for a ten year cycle is overheating within a few hours of playtime..... IGN reassures though lol .... "But don't fret -- it's not bricked, it hasn't melted, and it won't explode. The machine just needs time to cool down, so step away and try again later."

Its really not that bad though.

Some people have just had plenty of bad luck with the thing. HDMI/plug errors, 1.50 update breaking PS4's and overall ghastly shipment services from companies like UPS. Also, this time around Sony created several vents for airflow on the PS4 and threw in plenty of tech for cooling purposes.

But I agree, now's time to find out with numerous shipments out in the wild.

Spending that much cash on brand new next gen hardware and it's overheating every couple of hours is pretty damn concerning if you ask me. But i suppose it's not that bad.... at least it makes you take a break from gaming, it might even make owners play games less, encouraging them to do other things... making for a healthier and more balanced lifestyle!!!

Lemms have been waiting for this day. They've been in desperate need for PS4 bad news for months on end it finally came. Something they can use. Granted it's still kind of weak ammo but still something.

Actually the launch games scores were absolutely hilarious. This is not funny however since Sony is in desperate shape financially and would never recover if there are widespread problems.

Ummm that's just half on Amazon. There isn't 1 million reviews on Amazon to compare so what is your point? If there were 1 million reviews and 1000 defects/issues etc on that one site, you'd have a legitimate case but no.

That's just Amazon, and those are only the people that decided to voice their concerns there.

Look I don't care about system wars nonsense, but Sony is clearly at fault here, and they seemed to have rushed something on to shelves with a pretty high failure rate (I'm not saying 5% or anything like that, but even at .4% out of 1,000,000 is 40,000 consoles and 40,000 pissed off consumers)

Granted social media is now a big thing and word of mouth gets around quicker than it did before but twitter, facebook, amazon, and gaming forums were around in 06 and the failure rates weren't this high. If I paid $400 for a bricked system I'd be fuming and little children squabbling on a gaming website wouldn't make a difference.

I'm thanking my lucky stars that I got one that works, but feeling bad for all those people who wanted to enjoy it day one and won't be able to.

Nice notion of statistic there, people. There are 1615 reviews, out of which 492 were absolutely horrendous. Your comparison has to be between 492 and 1615, not 492 and 1 million. Lmao. Next thing we know they'll be comparing the defective units to total units made, not sold.

And yes, if above a quarter of the reviews have it as a 1-star product, there's something Sony needs to fix.

So your assumption is that amazon review scores is an acceptable statistical representation of the distribution of failures across all 1 million units? In that case, the failure rate would be 30%.

I'll give it a few months to see if this develops into a real problem or not. However, mine will be delivered tomorrow so I'll know personally soon enough.

Guess all those rumors where ps4's werent working during pre-launch demos were all true. Overheating was the culprit, as many had already speculated. PS4 hardware design is trash!

The only thing wrong with my PS4 is that sometimes the HD output to the TV is not clear but you got got to fiddle and it's fine. A common problem.

Now I am not saying these things are not happening, but 32 hours in pretty much tells e there is nothing wrong. I almost though something was wrong when I was playing Knack but it was just the refresh rate when I tested it out. (strange to because the FPS is not at slide show levels, and KZ loaded fine.)

Well i thought the same until I took my nephew to pick up his PS4. I feel like the casuals alone will help XB1 sell. All people were talking about in Best Buy was NFL, screen snapping, and multitasking. Very few of them were talking about games.

Not sure if that is good or bad, but the fact that tons of people are buying it for reasons OTHER than gaming means it will sell fine. Software might not...but the console will sell out at launch. Im thinking of getting one at the moment, just sometime next year.

IGN is clarifying what it means if your PS4 blinks red, which is that it has gone into overheat protection and needs a little bit to cool down.

If it hits the overheat protection threshold within a couple of hours of normal operation, then that'd be a problem and you should contact customer support.

Overheating is bad, which is why the thing shuts off before it overheats. It's only a problem if it frequently reaches that temperature threshold. So far all I know is it has happened to some amount of people X amount of times. Takes some time to figure out if an error as an isolated incident, or a bigger problem.

If it turns out that ps4's break quite easy, we may start seeing a LOT more RLOD problems as the year progresses, since most consoles that are goign to break will do so in the first year or two.
