If GameSpot had Game of the Decade (GOTD), who'd be nominated, and who'd win?

  • Halo: Combat Evolved (2001, XBox)
  • Metroid Prime (Nintendo GameCube, 2002)
  • World of Warcraft (PC, 2004)
  • Resident Evil 4 (Nintendo GameCube, 2005)
  • Super Mario Galaxy (Nintendo Wii, 2007)
  • Metal Gear Solid IV: Guns of the Patriots (PlayStation 3, 2008)
  • The Legend of Zelda: Wii (Nintendo Wii, 2009 or 2010) [If it doesn't come out, then I think The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (Nintendo GameCube, 2003) will be nominated.]
  • Starcraft II (PC, 2009 or 2010)
  • Gran Turismo 5 (PlayStation 3, 2009 or 2010)
  • Final Fantasy XIII (PlayStation 3 & XBox 360, 2009 or 2010)

Winner: World of Warcraft (PC, 2004)

I realize I left Grand Theft Auto IV out, but in two years from now, I don't think people will think much of it, so I left it out. I think my list if fairly accurate, even though you guys may disagree with some of them. Honestly, I have no idea how the last four will end up, but I'm wagering that it will be pretty good.

No games from 2000, 2003, or 2006. Well, there is one from 2003 if Zelda Wii doesn't make it time, but it probably will. Anyway, yeah, sorry... Gears of War (GOTY 2006 winner), I don't think will make it. And Half Life 2... I think will just miss the cut. Maybe they'll make it up to 20 contestants, though. I don't know.

So when 2010 comes around, and people beg GameSpot to have GOTD, and they do it, what will the nominations be, and who will win?

Metal Gear Solid because there would be no Tenchu, Syphon Filter, or Splinter Cell.

I would say that, so far, my nominations would be Deus Ex (2000), Baldur's Gate 2 (2001-ish), Warcraft 3, Diablo 2, KotOR, Halo, Metroid Prime, Pikmin, Super Smash Brothers Melee, Mass Effect, The Witcher, Call of Duty 2, STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl, Supreme Commander, Company of Heroes, and Dawn of War. These would be *my* nominations, not the things I think would win-if there were a GotD thing, it'd probably go to WoW or some 2009 game.

I think it will win the 3540-3550 Decade of the Year, but we're talking about the 2000-2010 Decade of the Year. ;)

It may be SSX3 for me. It may also be Burnout 3. It may be RE4.

Not sure but it would be too close for gamespot to call without being slammed by fanboys.

It brought a lot more to the table though.

imo GTASA had the best over the top missions, GTAVC had the best property/asset system, GTAIII had the best city.

But it set the foundation for sand box games in 3D. And the only close to GTA 3 or better has been a sequel to it. True crime sucked, Saints sucks, it all fails in comparison to GTA 3.

GTA III is probably the most influential game of the decade, and GOTD will probably be a popular, well-known game. GTA III doesn't necessarily deserve it, but realistically, it's most likely to win.

(personally I think maybe KOTOR deserves it, but the gaming media is too mainstream to nominate a game that isn't well known to the public)

GTA III Even though other GTA's are better, that was the first in full 3D which revolutionised the series.

Halo 3 didn't even win FPS of the year on the 360 alone! So there's no way in hell it would win across all platforms in the past 10 years in all genres. And Halo 2 didn't even win GOTY. There's no way in hell either win will.

Without a doubt it has to be WOW. It has captured the most lives. People are still playing it and talking about it year after year. It can't be beat.

Wouldn't game of the decade take games from 1998-2008?

If so, Ocarina of Time, easily.

If not, I'd probably agree with World of Warcraft. Like it or not, it was a genre changer and brought MMOs from the true hardcore gamers to mainstream audience. It also came at the time where online gaming was being brought in and really has helped push online interactivity for gaming.

I can't really think of any other game that has made such an large impact on gaming since OOT or Half-Life, but I'd say GTAIII is also a good contender in that it ushered in the idea of the sandbox world.
