with a GTX TITAN X you can play a game like battlefield 4 at minimum 30 fps on a 4k monitor , so when will we can play a game like witcher 3 on 8k monitor at 30 fps .... in a year , next two years , three years ?
8K is still in extremely early stages. 4K will require about 2-3 more gpu gens to be obtainable properly 8Hopefully Pascal is the next big thing).
Also, 8K is 4x the UHD res. Lets' get this clear:
1080p is twice the overall resolution increase over 720p
4K is four times the increase over 1080p
So, you're asking about 8x the resolution of 1080p. A gigantic leap over the current standart, both in TVs and monitors.
You won't be seeing it properply for a long, long time.
1080p ~= 2.07 million pixels (1920x1080)
1440p ~= 3.7 million pixels (2560x1440)
4k ~= 8.3 million pixels (3840x2160)
8k ~= 33 million pixels (7680x4320)
That's a HUUUUGE jump OP.. The stupid naming doesn't do the differences justice.. They should start referring to them by megapixels but I reckon they didn't want to do that at first because at the time of release, 1080p's 2MP sounded completely poverty compared to cameras MP count
@deadline-zero0: 8k a 16x jump from 1080p

The way things are going we will eventually get an ultra high super resolution that actually has better graphics than real life. That will be quite good I would imagine.
I have a query.
Who here thinks they'll be happy with 4K being the norm and not needing a jump in resolution...at least for a long while.
I get that bigger TVs require a better resolution but surely 4K is good for a standard 55 inch HDTV.....right?
This is one of the reasons why streaming game services will never be viable.
lol stuck at subpar resolution for streaming.
Jesus 4k isn't enough for you herms?
For proper VR 8k is not as high as you eventually want to get. We probably switch to triangular pixels by then.
I think we'll hook the visuals up to our nervous system before we'd get to 100k resolution VR goggles.

You will need a bigger TV than that to appreciate 4K resolution. You should worry more about having a PC that can effortlessly play games at 4K and a high frame rate that is only just about achievable now at high cost.
I'm actually quite happy playing at 1440p on PC and 1080p on PS4 for now.

As far as my PC and PS4 goes...I've only played at 1080p on a 32inch HDTV.
So I would think 4K on it would blow my mind. (edit: well....if I had a 32inch 4K HDTV)
I was wondering how big a HDTV you would need to make 4K look not as good as 4K on say my TV.
1080p for me is the golden resolution in my eyes.. I really don't see my self moving up to 1440p or 4k inless hardware is just that crazy far ahead that software demands is nonexistent.

It doesn't really work that way. 4K on your TV would be a complete waste. You could go way, way bigger than that with 4K and it will still look absolutely amazing. The point of much higher resolution is you can have much bigger screens and you don't lose any detail.

From what you say...I'm guessing 4K will be just fine for me for a long while.

lol didn't even knew you already had 8k tv's , or that is was already possible.
I do think that VR will bring this resolution race in a new gear though.
But neverous system, that's a long long time from now

At a rough guess I'm saying about 6 or 7 years. It will take that long for 4K TV's to be the norm. Then the next big thing whatever that is ( maybe 8K?) will be annoying people into thinking they need something they haven't got as is the way with all steps forward in technology. We want what we haven't got. Why we want it doesn't really matter, whether we need it or not is even less important. And so in this way the world spins... round and round we go...
I was watching a documentary that mentioned that the human eye can only see up to a certain resolution, dunno what the limit is. So eventually resolution upgrades will stop as there will be no point.

Don't be an ass. If I could remember said documentary I would tell you though it could have been those gadget shows on TV it was awhile ago.

No, we will eventually get graphics that are BETTER than real life. You will stop playing your videogame then go outside into the real world and say OMG these graphics suck!

Hell will just tap into someone else's already paid for wireless internet. I might have to do a bit of work to land a slot there. Purgatory blows by all accounts...

It is sooner than most people think. 8k will be pushed by the arrival of 8k consumer level video gear. 4k cameras have been around for years and are in a growing market--to the point where people are buying cameras specifically for video production.

Yeah ..why not?

Like I said diminishing.
On a real 4K TV in order to see difference you would have to sit pretty damn close to the TV. I can only imagine 8K you'd have to be even closer and no one is going to put a couch 2 feet in front of a > 50 inch TV. 4K and 8K is only good for PC gamers.
8k won't be possible for at least 20 years. and even when it is, pc gamers will opt to focus their gpu on other priorities like effects.
by that time though, pc gamers will either use 50 inch wall monitors for maximum immersion of they'll find a way to make living room pc's.
consoles will probably be dead by that time.
