5 to 6 years would be preferred for me.

Shorter and it would feel like an absolute Waste of effort to buy a console, longer and it will be far too stale. It also depends on the stride the consoels have, I think the PS3 has gone through around 6 years, no? and it feels around the right time to swap. The 360 lost steam long ago (har de har har)

the sometimes projected 10 years, are far too long, and if PC or tablets wont kill consoles, 10 year cycles WILL.

Was over at a buddy's playing games on his outstanding rig, saw gaming in much higher than 1080p resolution so that's a blurry mess now, this gen needs to end in a month

5-6 years. I figure by the end of this decade desktop PC gaming will be pretty much in the grave. Which is really sad. I think tablets will take over the mobile market and consoles will see big changes as well.

You can't really put a number on it. It just depends on how things feel - how the industry feels. I mean, ideally the generation will last forever because we will never get the feeling of needing something new (ie the generation is satisfying our needs). Obviously this will unlikely be the case, and I can make a prediction. But in terms of what I want, that depends on how things feel down the track.

These new consoles are attempting to fix a problem that did not exist with hardware that no one asked for. The 360 and PS3 could easily have gone through 2015. I want this gen to last for 10 years.

Plenty of people here asked for it. The sales for the PS3 and Xbox 360 slowed down, and the PS4 and Xbox One have been smashing records, so millions of others clearly wanted it too.

@farrell2k: eww the same hardware for 10 years? I couldn't do it. I'd move on to something else.

I don't necessarily care how long a gen lasts as long as each year that goes by brings something fresh to gaming.

But companies like Sony are bent on giving us games like Killzone 4(lol) and Knack(lol) which is a huge problem.

Seeing as the 360 and PS3 were still chugging along up until now, the X1 and PS4 could theoretically last a looooong time. Still hoping for 5 years, though in reality it'll likely last 8-10.

I am still gaming hard on my PS3 with tons of great software to play and a huge backlog of great games. I would not mind a 10 year console from Sony because they support gaming.

Microsoft and Nintendo are the ones who need new consoles every 5 years because they just get boring so quick.

So I guess meet in the middle and aim for 7-8 years. lol.

4 or 5 years would be ideal I think! 8 years is too long for a generation of consoles and failure to move with the rapidly changing times could render this new generation stale a few years from now. Backwards compatability needs to be sorted out though!

5 years. That's the perfect timing for consoles to not become ridiculously outdated compared to PC.

7+. This gen lasted a perfect length imo. Companies made money, consumers got to play the latest greatest games without having to upgrade consoles. Loved it. I'd be happy if PS5/X2 didn't come out until 2021 or 2022. Next time though, they need to build these things with expandable RAM/GPU and then just release $100 upgrades every 5 years.

If it was up to me, three years tops. But realistically five years. By that time these consoles will be using seven year old parts just like the last Gen is now. People have to remember that the psone are using 2010 hardware so it's already behind the eightball.
