Topic.

Basically, all this hoopla about RE6 has made want to play RE4 again. I have a few options. I own the game on PS2, but my copy is back home. I could get my girlfriend to send it to me, or, I could check out RE4 HD, cuz my roommate has a PS3. OR, I could get the PC version of RE4, but I've heard it has some issues.

So, system wars, what do you think? HD worth it on the PS3? And does it have all the content that was in the PS2 version (Ada's campaign, all the Mercs maps)? And for any PC gamers who've played it on there, are the issues that bad? Have they been fixed with patches? Is there sweet mods?

Wii version is my favorite.

From what I remember, PC version + mods is the better option.

Go with the HD rereleasee if it has all of the content found in the wii version.

If it's exactly like the 360 version, then it's a lazy port. I don't recommend it.

I have it on PS3 and it looks great.

Save yourself the money, and just tell your gorgeous girlfriend to send you the copy from home.

i have the GC and PS2 versions, and personally, despite being HD, is not worth the price, imo. I have my PS2 plugged with PS3 Component cables and, to me it looks decent.

But it's your call dude.

How'd you know she was gorgeous?:P

also, yeah I'll probably just do that. And maybe convince my roommate to get RE4 HD himself, since he was talking about getting RE6.

I have it on PS3. It's great, just as good as PS2/GC RE4, but it does have some more content. You have the Ada Wong mission after you beat the game, the Mercenaries mode, a harder difficulty, and some other stuff, as well as the PS2 content. It also has trophies as well.

I recommend it.

Mod the PC version!

Vanilla is bad, but playable, since I even completed it on Professional back in the day (Krauser was hell!). Modded one is awesome, and highly recommended!

Still, look up some Youtube vids, they should help you decide more easier...

I was just doing a basic google search for RE4 mods, but I couldn't seem to find a good central place to get some. Know of any particularly great ones? I don't think I'd want to alter the game itself much, but if there's a particularly awesome graphics overhaul, that would be great.

Also, how are the controls in the PC version? The review here said that mouse/keyboard is basically crap, and you need a gamepad. I have a 360 controller, which I would probably prefer to use anyway. Would it work good with that?

Wii version the best.

Look for mods here:

Scroll down until you hit "recommended mods"...

As for mouse and keyboard, the vanilla version had horrible controls, you couldn't even use a mouse. Still, I got used to them eventually and completed the game a few times...

Control mods will fix most of the issues, though, and add mouse aiming, making the game play good on m/k. As for 360 gamepad, should work fine, think there even are mods that add 360 button signs to the game...

Having played the PC and PS3 versions, I'd say they both have their pros and cons. The PC version, essentially being a straight PS2 port lacks some of the more advanced geometry and lighting effects of the HD remasters (since they are based on the then-graphically superior GameCube version).

On the other hand, the PC version can be forced to run in 1920*1080 and the likes, greatly reducing the aliasing present in the lower res PS3/X360 versions.

So graphically, the PC version (unmodded) looks slightly flat and bland, but you could argue it makes up for it with support for higher resolutions.

The Xbox 360 controller is supported and works great, but you need a mod to replace the button prompt icons with those of the controller, else they just show up as generic gamepad buttons.

And yes, the PC version is moddable to hell and back, but no matter how much you mod it, you won't get the more sophisticated visual effects of the HD rerelease.

I would personally lean towards the PC version since I can't stand jaggies and playing the console version on my 1080p TV made them noticeable enough for me to be annoyed by them. Maybe if you're on a 720p display they won't bother you as much, and the console version obviously is the more convenient one, even if the PC dito isn't as bad as some people make it out to be.

In the end, it's more or less a toss-up between the different versions, and a great game whatever your choice of platform.

EDIT: Forgot to add that if you go with the PC version, be sure to apply the official update available. Because out of the box it's not only by far the worst looking version of RE4, but nigh on the worst looking game of all time. :)

This. Also, too bad Capcom didn't somehow incorporate the Move controls into the game. That Would've mimicked the Wii version perfectly or better.

#22 Posted by ReadingRainbow4 (14084 posts) -

I could never get modded to work properly but I was trying to use a mouse also.

I'm sure it's the best version if you get it up and running.

for me the biggest problem of getting into RE4 since I last played it on the PS2 was getting used to the controls again, but once I got passed that it was still a blast to play, I myself got it for the Xbox 360, I'd imagine the PS3 version is no different, some people complained they just upped the resolution and did nothing to smooth rough edges and up the textures, and that's true but it still looks good enough, and as far as gameplay goes it's still my favorite Resident Evil

Yeah, it's a fantastic game. I haven't played it since it came out on PS2. I think I'm gonna go ahead and get my PS2 copy back, but I also might get the PC version. Been lookin around at some mods. Seems a bit more involved than modding most games that I've dealt with, but not too bad. And, allegedly, you can get it looking damn good, with totally redone high res textures all around, ENB, forced HD resolution, plus there's a simple fix that claims to have the mouse aim fixed perfectly. Hopefully, with that, it plays just like RE5. That game worked much better with the mouse/kb than I expected.

Just stick with the GC and PS2 version, I played it over a friend's and it was just garbage.

#36 Posted by AcidSoldner (7051 posts) -
I'd stay away from the HD release as they're pretty terrible ports overall. I'd recommend either the Wii or the Gamecube version.
#37 Posted by SPYDER0416 (16736 posts) -

Playing it right now actually. I've played the Gamecube and PS2 version, and this is easily the best version out there. The new controls are nice (though you still need to stand still and use left stick to aim), its got the best graphical quality out there and its got all the stuff you got on the Wii and PS2 versions.

The Ada campaign doesn't get a resolution boost during cutscenes, which really shows, but otherwise its RE4 goodness in HD. I even reviewed it for fun (if you care)!

I've owned PS2 (scratched the disc), then GC (borrowed out and never returned), and Wii versions of the game. Wii version is my favorite of those three, but the controls definitely turn a challenging game where ammo is precious into a cakewalk where headshots come naturally. Still an absolute blast to play.

Does the PS3 version have Move support? If so that'll be the best version because on the Wii RE4 played beautifully

I'd get the version on the 3DS over all of those. Its called Resident Evil : Revelations.
#42 Posted by rjdofu (9170 posts) -
PC + mod = more contents than console ver. ever be.
#43 Posted by Master_ShakeXXX (13361 posts) -

It's still the greatest game ever made, only it's in HD this time. Buy it, now.

General recommended mods(you should also make a account on this site to view some of the threads):

-Resident Evil 4 PC Texture Patch 2.0 By Albert
-Enhanced Environment 1.5 By Cerberus
-Lighting Tweaks by Cdiddy7
-RE4 Community Patch (Basic) by Various, put together by Slayer-x

The modded version of RE4 has the best graphics, the best controls and the most content, though it's a hassle to add all of the mods. If you don't mind, then the end result is the definite version. As for other recommended mods, here's a good list.

You can check the list of allmods here. Obviously don't have to add them all, just a few.

Wii version is the best. The motion controls actually help Reduce the otherwise sluggish controls, at least a bit. Sure you could do PC, but sometimes I think upping resing everything, with higher res textures, while retaining the same basic geometry, actually looks worse. RE4 has that 16mm horror feel IMO.
