that's a lot of people with steam set to auto start
Thread backfire.
First few posts in thread covered everything.
that's a lot of people with steam set to auto start
who sets steam to auto start? Seriously?

people with RAM
well i got plenty of that but i have never ever set it to auto start, also auto start is off by default so i am guessing not many people even use the option.

No idea, i have it off from when i was doing overclocking/benchmarking
There used to be a way to see how many of the concurrent users were currently in game but I can't seem to find it now
It used to show it on the community page but it doesn't seem to be there anymore.

But why it even matters. If one puts Steam in autostart then that's because he's using it frequently.

While that is entirely unprovable, my main point was the concurrent count doesn't show how many people are actually playing games. I think when it 7 million, there were like 1 million in game
~10 months 7 days ago it was 7.5M, now its 9M (although that spike on the chart looks like an artifact, but i'll keep spitballing anyway). growth of ~20%. superficially it seems in game players crudely approximates concurrent users. http://steamcharts.com/

Well nobody really said 9 million concurrent meant there were 9 million people actively playing Steam games. It just signifies how popular Steam is as a gaming-oriented social networking and digital distribution platform.

Um, you sure? Isn't auto start on by default? I never went into settings and changed the auto start function. It just is.

... pretty much everyone i know has it on auto-start... including me...
Why would you NOT have it on auto start?

I have Steam on Auto Start. Why not? when I turn on my computer one of the first things I do is check steam.
9 million seems really low.
Compared to what?
Well Steam is such a huge marketplace. I thought itd be ten times that number.
Its kinda funny, when steam first came out I hated it! Like everyone I knew hated it.... Now we can't live with out it haha My how the tides have turned..

They hit 75 million active users at the beginning of this year... Why would the concurrent users come in at 90 million?

Steam has over 100M active accounts and peaks at 9M concurrent online users. Isn't enough? Meanwhile PSN only has like 7.5M subscribers WORLDWIDE.

Considering everyone I know with a pc has downloaded some kind of game at some point I'd still expect more. PSN really has that many? That is HUGE considering Sony just starting charging for online play and the ps4 is at around 10 million units sold?
...Im not a psn subscriber, btw.

Did you just hit back with an anecdote? Righto... Not sure what we're meant to do with that info.

good point i guess-
Still my point is since it's off by default not many people would turn it on since most people don't change default options
@Kjranu:
agreed about dota....its really picking up now. I used to play it back in the warcraft 3/4 days and recently started again on steam. Its pretty fun honestly, but i have more hours in dota than all my other games in my steam library combined.
Also, in a few years steam is going to be humungous for the PC gaming community. I don't really see how developers can ignore the PC for alot of multiplats much longer.

online =\= playing

I'm confused why you think this matters? Lets not forget the people NOT on Steam, using OTHER services to play games.
Probably more than 50% of those 9 million 'concurrent' users are either no longer gaming but didn't bother uninstalling Steam....or playing only Dota 2 and L4D
How you choose to interpret what that 9 million concurrent users is entirely up to you. You can however, choose to believe that there are 9 million 'active' gamers on that day, or that there are 9 million potential customers in buying a newly released game. It wouldn't be an understatement to say that both statements are far from the truth. Many of those 9 mil users don't have any intention of buying any of the newly released games...ever. Many don't even have PCs powerful enough to run any of the recent games. Many of those installed Steam just to play Dota 2.
Steam users cannot be compared to Xbox Live or PSN users, whereby those users went out of their way to get a gaming console - something you almost wouldn't do unless you intend to be actively gaming. The same cannot be same about Steam users.
I also feel like that is low considering 99% of the PC gamers I know have Steam installed at the very least.
That said....I've had Steam open for the passed week now and haven't played a game in it.
But whatever....Steam has great sales and PC is fun...it ain't going no where.

Why would you NOT have it on auto start?
Because I don't have a reason to. I don't keep my computer running if it's not in use and I only log on to Steam if I'm actually going to play a game. Starcraft 2, League of Legends and Project M netplay have their own launchers so most of the time when I am playing a game it's not even through Steam.
