Granted, I don't play a ton of hard games, but this game kicked my ass years ago. I never bothered finishing it. But since it's available as a digital download for Vita owners, I may give it another try. Second place for me was Mega Man 9. Made it to Wiley twice and still gave up lol. You, SW?

F-Zero GX, TrackMania: Build to Race, Devil May Cry 1 and 3 are pretty hard. Spyborgs could be pretty brutal too. Don't know about the hardest, but those are the first to come to mind.

Beatmania IIDX 13 Distorted

Got about halfway up the difficulty scale at my best. Most other music games I 100% full combo songs at highest difficulty.

Well what about games with Low Skill Floors but high skill ceiling ? Bayonetta is very accessable but amping up the difficulty can render it very challenging. And then you get got games like batman that just about anyone can play and finnish but mastering it is a whole other issue.

So I guess what I'm saying is... Does mastery count ?

Judge Dredd on Genesis got really hard in later levels. This was back when your health didn't regenerate and you couldn't save your spot in the game people.

I feel old.

This MOTHER F of a game! It took me THREE OR FOUR MONTHS to finish it - because I've run out of ammo on level 7 (out of 10) as I hadn't known that you can destroy crates with weapons other than the basic pistol in order to obtain additional ammo, so I had to replay the game from the beginning...

It is a great game, though. One of the very best survival horror or survival / FPS hybrids and my favourite Alien game of all time.

No idea. It's between DMC3, Super Meat Boy, Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, one of the Battletoads games, or one of the Souls games.

Anything on the zx spectrum, no checkpoints, no savegames, you die, you start the game from scratch.

I'm resisting looking up Swapper puzzles right now, but it's tough. Some of these are absolutely insane.

I flew threw that game pretty quickly. I find most of the puzzles in that game a little too easy(but I also play a healthy amount of puzzle games), but the 4 pressure plate puzzle was a solid brain tease I guess.

Hardest unfair game I would probably say something for the Atari like the baseball game where the computer moves at super speed. In a well designed sort of way I would probably say Ninja Gaiden.

****, Trials, I didn't even think about that. BRUTAL.

I'm guessing the hardest game I ever played was probably some terribly designed old school game. Can't really think of one in particular.

In recent years though, Ninja Gaiden 2 on 360.

I was about to say Double Dragon 2 was easy, but then I remembered I would always take all the lives from player 2 before getting on with the game... not even sure if I ever beat it legit come to think of it.

Last truly difficult game I remember playing (with out changing difficulty options) is F-Zero GX. Those missions were killer and required so much precision, but completing them was incredibly satisfying.

Dark Souls was pretty difficult for the first couple of hours, but once you hit a certain point in Soul levels (if you build your character right) and have enough patience the game becomes pretty standard.

Too many old school games to count, some in the arcades some on 8bit, some 16bit. A lot mentioned above already. I would say Capcom's Maximo on PS2 was tough, Capcom's Megaman 1 on NES, Ghosts and Goblins, Castlevania 1, DMC3 on Dante Must Die non-greatest hits version, Ninja Gaiden NES 1-3, Ninja Gaiden Xbox, etc. I beat them all though, but they were tough, but I never thought this was the hardest game I ever played! Games aren't hard, it's just a matter of how much time you put in. These days though, the devs want you to finish their games so the difficult on normal is really like super easy setting, and Hardest feels like Normal to me.

I don't really have a hardest I have ever played, but I play a lot of hard games. IMO, the majority of today's games are incredibly easy. Even the typical games I play, I beat on the hardest settings like The Last of Us, which is how I got that Platinum. That's how I got a high gamerscore and trophies, beating games on hardest settings...all from my training with old school games and arcades. Rockband, Singstar, Dance Dance, and Guitar Hero had some tough things going on in those games on the hardest settings (Expert).

My problem is staying interested in a game. I usually get bored these days once I figure out the game, they are too easy. Devs really have to keep it compelling to keep me in it. I loved how for instance in the old 8bi days the Megaman games you acquired new powers and then the end began. There could be some very difficult games that I just had no interest in as I don't play every genre. I don't care about racing, sports, or golf games for instance, but the ones I played were easy to me against friends that owned the games.

I'd say the toughest I ever had was against pro players in fighting tournaments years ago, and I even won a few of them. Fighting games are easy against the A.I., but playing in RL with hundreds of people behind you screaming, it's pretty intense.
