Poll GTX 1080 or PS4 PRO (114 votes)

GTX 1080 78%
PS4 PRO 22%

Hi everyone. I hope I have come to the right forum but I am undecided on what to do next. I recently build a very nice PC. The only thing I am missing is a graphics card. Unfortunately, I can't afford the Titan X at the moment so I was looking at some 1080 versions.

However, even there the prices are kinda steep and I would probably have to shell out +$600. I thought about getting the PS4 Pro instead for gaming and using my PC exclusively as a work station.

Would that be the better investment? I used to play a lot of W@W and MW2 on the Xbox 360, but for the past years I have barely played anything. The only thing keeping me from getting a sweet GPU, apart from the price, is that the players numbers for BF1 and other games are apparently low. I know that COD is supposedly also dead on the PC and I have read online that most console games have sub-par PC ports. Are there any other good FPS games for the PC?

Any advice?

I hope I have come to the right forum

Technically yes, but nope.

I have read online that most console games have sub-par PC ports.

Nope. It's incredibly rare for the PC version to be worse actually.

Are there any other good FPS games for the PC?

Yes, it's the best platform for the genre actually.

---

Anyways, I do have a 1080 and it's dope as fvck. You wouldn't regret it.

Question is, do you already have a regular PS4? If so, then definitely go get yourself a nice GPU. If you don't have a PS4, then it might be worth it to check out the Pro. Just look at the exclusive games and see if they're enticing enough to you.

Such a bait thread.

The simple answer would be - Buy the PS4 if you like the exclusives and get a graphics card for your PC if you don't. Of course you didn't design this thread to be answered that way and without giving your computer specs no one can seriously answer your question. Would not a 1070 do you? Are you OK paying to play online? Is your first troll post indicative of an alt account? Who knows and, more importantly, who cares?

PC. Keep in mind game prices.

More games, better games, more variation, more support, better communities and community control. And with lower game prices you will save/you would have been spending that $600 faster than you expect. You like exclusives? Better versions? Playing the way you want to play? Classics? A PC just makes more sense for 95% of all gamers.

Because of the software pricing it is easier and faster to buy 1080 first and a PS4Pro later than the other way around, if you really want to.

Technically yes, but nope.

Sorry, I wasn't sure where to post it. Just would like a lot of input.

I have read online that most console games have sub-par PC ports.

Nope. It's incredibly rare for the PC version to be worse actually.

That's a relief. That was a bit off putting for me.

Are there any other good FPS games for the PC?

Yes, it's the best platform for the genre actually.

That's perfect as well.

---

Anyways, I do have a 1080 and it's dope as fvck. You wouldn't regret it.

Cool, which one did you get? I can't decide which one to buy.

I don't have any console at the moment, never owned a PS4 or Xbox One. The only exclusive games I like are Ratchet & Clank and Crash Bandicoot.

Thanks for your answers :) I appreciate the help.

I'll vote PC based on the type of games you like to play, PS4 is a great system with great exclusives, but if your main focus is FPS and multiplayer, PC is the place to be.

I have a 5960x, a Gigabyte Designare motherboard and 32gb Ram from G.Skill. I recently bought a 4k TV and I wanted to get the 1080 to take advantage of the TV.

OK paying to play online?

I forgot about the cost of PSN. That's a major gripe in my opinion.

Is your first troll post indicative of an alt account?

My first and only account, although I lurk on here sometimes.

You are right about the prices. I just checked and the games codes are really cheap.

I will do just that and get the 1080 first. Maybe the PS4 will come down a bit, once Microsoft releases the Socrpio.

Well, if I was to give you the benefit of the doubt it seems to me that you have enough money for both. The equipment you have listed costs enough that if you can afford that then making an apples vs oranges decision like this seems silly. Just get both.

If you are looking for a casual COD machine though, go with the PS4.

I didn't pay full retail though, otherwise I wouldn't have gotten the 5960x. At the moment I am not financially sound so it really comes down to it.

But yeah, I will get the PS4 later. I am hoping the new COD will be fun.

Thank you :)

'I'm not financially sound', 'I just bought a new 4K TV' and '$600 graphics card or $400 games console?' don't mesh well in my world.

Or maybe you're not 'financially sound' because you let gaming forums such as SW make purchasing decisions for you...

A lot of FPS can be found on consoles these days, they have/had their fair share of exclusive FPS too.
But still, the main reasons I play on PC is because of strategy games and (online) FPS.

Lately I've been enjoying a lot of Battlefield 1 and Day of Infamy, because I really dig their World War settings and armaments ^^

I'm also looking forward to singleplayer FPS like Prey or System Shock.
And then there are co-op games like Killing Floor 2. A lot of different flavors of FPS on PC if you want that.

@undefined: I would say get the 1080. Since you haven't played many games lately, the 1080 wouldn't be a bad choice as you can still use your computer for work and when you find a game that interests you, then you can still play it on your PC assuming the game is made for PC. The only reason I'd get a PS4 Pro is for the exclusives if any interest you.

Cool, which one did you get? I can't decide which one to buy.

I got the MSI Seahawk with the all-in-one cooling. Probably not the best 1080 on the market, but I wasn't interested in the fastest speeds or overclocking. My rig doubles as a workstation and a gaming PC. So I wanted something that would keep good temps under long hours of heavy load. Some of the work I do will push a GPU more than a game will.

Also, it just looks slick as fvck with the rest of my build lol. My last PC was a bit gaudy, I wanted something more sleek

If you want good advice on PC parts (on this site) there is a board for that here.

1080 easily. Then again I'm bias. I got into Pc gaming early last year and it's where I prefer to play. Consoles are for exclusives for me imo. It comes down to games, where you prefer to play and where your friends play maybe. You could always purchase a PS4 later on.

Necessary Information:

  • What monitor do you have?
  • What exclusive games to you want to play on PS4?

If you've only got a 1080p monitor there is no point in getting anything above a 1060. You can get a 1060 and a PS4 Pro for the price of a 1080.

Why not wait, the 1080Ti is supposed to be right round the corner and this is coming from someone who already owns a Titan XP, 1080, 1070, 1060 and a 1050Ti. You have top of the range parts already.

I wish I would have picked the Titan XP over two 1080's but dear god 1500$ CAD seemed too crazy for a single card. 1800$ CAD for two wasn't great either but at least when they work they are monsters.

GTX 1080 = $600 and still can't play any games. After you add a CPU that doesn't bottlenecks it, enough ram, OS, case, power supply, etc. you'll end up with a rig that costs $1,200+ and it will be big, it will get hot, it will consume a lot of power and probably make a lot of noise if you go cheap with the cooling system.

vs

PS4 Pro = $400, although by subbing to Plus you might end up paying a bit more

After you add a CPU that doesn't bottlenecks it, enough ram, OS, case, power supply, etc. you'll end up with a rig that costs $1200+ and it will be big, it will get hot, it will consume a lot of power and probably make a lot of noise if you go cheap with the cooling system.

vs

PS4 Pro = $400, although by paying for Plus you might end up paying a bit more

I recently build a very nice PC. The only thing I am missing is a graphics card. Unfortunately, I can't afford the Titan X at the moment so I was looking at some 1080 versions.

Read the damn OP.

Unless you're waiting a year or are lazy and only pay attention to steam sales, games are the same price.

Really? The guy literally said he already has a nice PC but is missing a grahics card.

If you really wanna go all-in OP. Buy a used 1070 for 300$ and a PS4 for another 300$. Pretty fantastic combo if you ask me.

It is hard to take TC seriously. Why would someone who supposedly does not play games much even be looking at a 1080 or mention a Titan X? If you are mentioning cards like that you know that they will destroy a PS4 Pro. There is no comparison. BF1 low population... LOL. There are always many thousands of people playing and no issue finding a game. http://bf1stats.com/

Jab at console ports.... come on... even Arkham Knight is better on PC now.

That's completely false.
