http://www.gamespot.com/articles/video-game-hall-of-fame-what-would-you-nominate/1100-6425377/

  • Super Mario 64
  • Goldeneye 007
  • Final Fantasy VI
  • Rock Band 3
  • Journey
  • Earthbound
  • Doom
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
  • Space Invaders
  • Elite
  • Tetris
  • Halo: Combat Evolved
  • Half-Life 2

What do you think, SW?

I think they are definitely missing a bunch. GTA for sure. The Blizzard games too (Warcraft, Starcraft, Diablo)

It's a pretty good list, though I'd replace Doom with Duke Nukem 3D. Other good nominees could be Red Faction for it destructability, maybe Timesplitters for it's run and guns style FPS and SOCOM for at least taking a first step towards a realistic style shooter, speaking of which, Rainbow Six. (Plus the already mentioned GTA III, Warcraft and Diablo).

@nintendoboy16: Yes, how dare they nominate influential, revolutionary, landmark titles for a Hall of Fame list.

I played it for the first time last year. It's a terrible game. Great concept, and great technology for the time, but the design choices were just downright moronic. Red Faction 2 is even worse.

Well, you're about a decade and a half too late. Of course it won't stand up to the standards of today, not many games that old will. When it released it was a great game for the time and introduced a level of destructibility that no other game had. Half the games on the OP list have been greatly surpassed by their more modern counterparts, that doesn't take away what they achieved.

If you're going to ask for nominations, at least establish some guiding criterion, such as:

  • Cultural impact
  • Popular recognition
  • Novelty/Originality
  • Critical reception
  • Technical accomplishment

Any time you do a list, it's not about who gets in (everyone who's played a particular game can at least comprehend why a game makes the list), but it's about explaining why others get left out.

You don't seem to have grasped what I said. Sure, it had a great concept and great technology behind it (the destructible environments) but the foundational game design (levels, characters, gunplay, etc) was all pretty bad. And many games over the years have been "timeless" in terms of design, and don't ever get "surpassed" by later games.

Red Faction was not good at the time and it has aged terribly. Doing destructible environments first doesn't make it a good game. Is Kill.Switch a good game because it did cover mechanics first?

Yeah, if we're talking games with impact, that's not such a bad list. There are definitely games that would suit the list better than Journey and Half Life 2 though.

Most of the greats are simply not there. Then again, games are subjective so it's okay.

I mean like if we're talking in general this is our favorites, the thread.

If we're talking like what has to be the group that gets in to start the hall, that class needs to be the type of games where the impact has had resonance for decades. Like Pong would have to make that hall for obvious reasons.

Some of those other games making a list are like LOLgtfo: Halo, Half Life 2, Rock Band 3. In Rock Band 3's case it's not a matter of quality, it's a matter of why would it go in over Guiter Hero and Rock Band? Mario 64 and Ocarina are probably the wrong pick for those franchises, and Earthbound? come on get real, that game is criminally overrated by the "omg it's a cult classic, it's so good and derp" crowd. On a platform that had Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 6, Secrets of Mana, and Teranigma: Earthbound does not rank, at all.

@charizard1605: And I don't have a problem with them on the list, but considering posts that now put these games on lower pedestals (SM64 being shunned in favor of Galaxy, GE not aging well/never good, OoT overrated, that kind of thing) have me worried.

No, I get it. You've played dozens of shooters that came after and it's colored your view of Red Faction. It can't be helped. Sure, for each individual aspect, you could probably find a game at the time that did each better, but it was by no means a bad game. For the sum of it's parts, it was a very good game.

I would also argue that there are very few "timeless" games that have yet to be surpassed. What are these games? Certainly not Doom, or Half Life 2, or Mario 64, or Halo CE.

Actraiser already is in the Gamespot Hall of Fame.

All is right with the world... @jg4xchamp:

Oh and Minecraft should be in the hall of fame. Not out of personal admiration, though I do enjoy the game, but it's of legendary status.

I'd like to see kotor and final Fantasy 4 on the list...

Edit... How is there a goat list with Michael Jackson moonwalker and not a link to the past?

Nice list but it also needs:

  • Starcraft
  • Diablo 2
  • Warcraft 3
  • Thief: The Dark Project
  • Planescape: Torment
  • World of Warcraft
  • Max Payne
  • Morrowind
  • Shadow of the Colossus
  • Shenmue 2
  • Street Fighter
