I had no idea that Spring Mobile and Simply Mac where even stores.

At the same time GameStop is pushing into these new fields, the company plans to scale back its gaming operations slightly. In the current fiscal year, the company expects to shutter somewhere between 120 and 130 of its 6,457 gaming retail locations worldwide.

Also, the scaling back of the GameStop proper is very small TC. Nothing to fret over.

How does Gamestop fit into mobile gaming? There are no used games. Most of the games are free to play or cost very little. They are all on the app store, which is far more convenient than going to Gamestop. There is no room for physical media. Is Gamestop going to start selling phones?

They already do sell phones and knowing them they're just going to come up with a middle man way like download codes for the app store.

I guess that shows how often I frequent Gamestop. I guess it sort of makes sense if they are selling phones. I couldn't imagine the profit margin on a download code for a $5 game would be worth their time and effort, but I guess times are tough.

Well they're lining up more and more with their company name then. GAME - STOP.

Amazing how ironic their name is. Game Stop and then the slogan is Power to the Players. Can't play nothing if you stopping our games.

It's also an easier way for them to avoid discussing digital sales becoming more prominent.

Console gaming isn't dying and Gamestop could never survive on PC Gaming alone because most of it is DD now. There's no resell market for PC games. I think console gaming will eventually go all digital within the next 10-15 yrs though.

I never mentioned PC games anywhere in that post, I doubt consoles will be around in 10-15 years and mobile gaming is already digital...

lol, yup.

I mean, the best physical stores for mobile games are literally stores that sell phones :P Every single game we play on them is obtained at the App Store/Play Store/WP Store/whatever Blackberry uses :P

I'm genuinely curious to see how these new GameStop stores are XD

They'll be like 3rd party network extensions, like Walmart or authorized Verizon stores that aren't actually Verizon stores. You'll be able to get a dataplan, but this time it comes with a free 10 dollar App Store gift card.

@Assassin_87: Yes pretty crazy how mobile chips are as powerful as consoles now too, imagine what they will be like in a few years.

The future of console gaming (if you can call it that) is likely to be cloud streaming and no actual hardware requirements. The reason Gamestop are planning to target mobile is simple; everything is going digital and they plan to too. Sony/Microsoft games will all be sold through their respective digital stores which bypasses any need for a retail environment and this will pave the way for their very own game streaming service. Gamestop will have no choice but to target mobile gaming though their own digital distribution service because its unlikely there will be anything else.

@musicalmac: So what you're saying is that they are utterly pointless? :P

I mean when the network stores (if they don't already) or bigger 3rd party extensions like Walmart start doing this those GameStop stores will *probably* come crashing down.

Wouldn't be much easier (and far less risk and expensive) to just have a new stand filled with App Store (and others) cards in the regular stores? :P

No idea. But I do know you don't have to leave your house to browse or buy mobile games. Not at all.

I'm at least confident it'll be part of the future.. I still think we're going for at least 1 more round of current type of consoles tho (alongside Cloud servies from Sony, MS, NV, etc.) unless there's a major global breakthrough of net latency and speed and ultra cost effective within this PS4/X1 gen.

Anand says Apple's A7 is already on par with what we saw in the Core2Duo era, and it's likely the A8 will double CPU performance and as much as quadruple GPU performance (giant leaps that have been similar throughout Apple's SoC development). In fact, the A7 looks more like a Haswell chip than a mobile chip under a microscope, it's already 64bit and everything.

It's coming sooner than you all anticipate.

It's coming sooner than you all anticipate.

That's possible, but there are a number of factors that weighed in on previous generations that cannot be relied upon this time around. Let's take a look back on previous Ax SoCs.

A5 --> A6 --> A7

45nm --> 32nm --> 28nm

Cortex A9 (ARMv7 32-bit) --> Swift (custom ARMv7 32-bit) --> Cyclone (custom ARMv8 64-bit)

PowerVR 5 SGX543MP2 --> PowerVR 5 SGX543MP3 --> PowerVR 6 G6430MP4

The jump in CPU performance was due to first moving to a custom architecture, and then moving from ARMv7 to ARMv8. There is no new ARMv9 for Apple to utilize, so in order to double performance they would need to take advantage of a 20nm process (which is expected for the A8) to allow for higher clock speeds, and further customize their in-house ARMv8 architecture. Using LPDDR4 might also help reduce power consumption and improve performance, but we'll have to see if it will be ready for the mass market later this year.

There was a relatively small jump in GPU performance when moving from the A5 to the A6, but the A7 introduced a brand new PowerVR 6 architecture (replacing a GLES 2 based PowerVR 5/5 XT which had been around since Apple's A4). Again, there is no new PowerVR 7 architecture (with new API support) for Apple to utilize. Working with PowerVR 6 or more likely a 6 XT model such as the GX6450MP4, Apple might have to increase clock speed by a reasonable margin in order to achieve quadruple the GPU performance.

One other factor worth noting is newer versions of iOS have been known to improve performance, so an A6 running iOS 7 will outperform an A6 running iOS 6.

Not really. I'll leave the same comment here that I did in the "Consoles are becoming a ripoff" thread.

In America, convenience is king. It triumphs all else. Plus profit margins on mobile are huge.

People dont want to buy a handheld, or a game console. Everyone and their 8yr old son has a smart phone these days.
