http://www.gamerevolution.com/features/7-greatest-mario-games-of-all-time

7. Super Mario Galaxy 2

6. Super Mario Bros

5. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

4. Super Mario Galaxy

3. Super Mario Bros 3

2. Super Mario 64

1. Super Mario World

What do you think, SW? I'm pretty happy to see Super Mario 64 in its rightful place, ahead of the Galaxy games.

The lack of Yoshi's Island is disturbing.

And why a top 7?

Super Mario Bros 2 should be number one.

Damn, that game is good.

Good to see Super Mario 64 get the respect is deserved. Best 3D Mario to date.

Well sure, we could pull top Mario lists from anywhere.

Here is one that goes well against your opinion. Plenty more where that come from.

Any top list that ignores Yoshis Island and has SMG2 at the bottom is just straight up garbage though.

Because they obviously have difficulty naming 10. So why not skew it to match the maximum number of good ones you can think of

Super Mario World is trash

even as kid with upgraded graphics i always had more fun playing Mario 3 Period i didn't even buy SMW

the bosses are lamer, the music isn't as good, the sprites aren't as enjoyable

MARIO 3 is godlike compared to world its not even friggin close u have tanooki hammer bro suit, frog suit

no dude world ur trash ur literally trash even tho ur graphics are better ur gameplay isn't even close to as good or as fun as mario 3

this is list is horrid

yoshi island and mario 3 are real good games like that last

SMW was all hype and not fun to play i cant stand ppl who defend world over 3 and yoshi island ill never understand them

as a kid i rented SMW and was like meh meh the cape thats not great, i love the racoon suit way more

the game play an levels weren't as memorable and i didnt like the boss design compared to mario 3 or yoshi island

no dude world sucks i stand behind that 100%

Well...yeah, is pretty hard to rank the Super Mario games, they are all extraordinary and revolutionary for their times, personally i enjoyed much more Galaxy 1 than SM64 but the list is pretty accurate.

that game was a polarizing clusterfuck. Hard, confusing, tedious... Hardly anybody would chose that game over the 7 on the list.

Yoshi's Island is cool and all...ok, really really cool, but i don't think it has anything on the rest of the Super Mario games in this list, except maybe the original.

I would say that the TC is blinded by nostalgia but I'm pretty sure he started gaming during the PS2 era, so I guess bad taste will have to work here.

how is super mario world good

cape mario isn't as good as tanooki i can transform into a statue, i can use frogsuit swim extra fast in the water and still use it on land , i have boot that can get in an stomp on things, i have hammer bro mario throw hammers at bosses or whatever an kill them that way

the final boss in mario 3 is epic an shooting fireballs an stuff

and bosses smash the air ships they get there own airships and you got tank army, navy, airforce in world 8 dark world

no dude world doesn't have crap just generic and not even close to as good as 3 goes

Mario 64, Mario 3, and Yoshi island i think are all better than world easily for what they bring to the table as far as im concerned

Has nothing to do with skill. The game is not difficult. It has more to with having too many barren and uninteresting level designs as well as the janky camera. How inferior the Throwback Galaxy in SMG2 is to the rest of the game speaks volumes and that's one of the better SM64 levels.

i dont hate super mario world but after i beat i don't really feel like playing it again

whereas mario 3 has infinite replayability each world feels great picking it up starting fresh either do a full run or using whistles its just fine however i wanna pick up an play it

i actually like doing the full runs cuz all the stages are great in mario 3

and like with 64 i can pick that up an just start going at it an getting all the stars same thing all the stages an missions yes sign me up replay whenever

same with yoshi island

and mario world its basically after u beat it once i don't even wanna do all levels they weren't that good

i don't like the game that much to replay it

think about which mario game would u rather replay from scratch mario3 mario 64 and yoshi island come out on top world just a fine one shot an ur done an never play it again basically imo

Everyone's list will look a little different. It's hard to choose the best from a trunk full of flawless games.

Sometimes it pays to read the link guys.

Look at his SM64 description. He's up front about his nostalgia fueled decision. Then he goes into a description of how groundbreaking it was for its time, which it was of course.

Contrary to the title of the article, this isn't a list about which Mario games are the best. This is a list about the games that touched this little guys heart the most. Awww.

SM64 will always be a landmark title for this series. It's a landmark title for gaming in general. Doesn't make it the best game in the series by any means, not even close.

Eh it is impossible to match 64 in ways. Entering Peachs castle was the same feeling as waking up next to a pretty girl. Mario 64 transcends games.

This has to be a joke. I walk through series like Ninja Gaiden and Souls, games like Super Meat Boy and VVVVVV. I've been gaming since Atari, almost every mainstream game post-NES is a breeze.

The entirety of the Mario series is pretty easy, only moderately challenging in spots and SM64 is one of the easiest games in the series despite having sloppy controls, camera and weak level design.

Na it is all how you play. 64 has that street fighter technique. You can play the game like the man with no balls or you can ninja through it. It's why it is so popular. Noobs can stroll through it, but the controls offer so much room to improve. That game is geometry.

You're literally the only person I've ever heard cite skill as a reason for liking Mario 64.

Let's be real: besides being a fun game, it's popular because of nostalgia, being revolutionary, and being the game to successfully bring Mario into 3D.

@Heirren: I don't know how you can compare them. There was so much more to do in Mario 64 and the presentation was stellar. Gameplay wise, the controller gave you better control over jumps and other maneuvers

It really captured the feeling of Mario. How does a novice play Mario Bros or Mario World? They walk through it. How does a seasoned play play it? Rhythmically. Mario 64 holds this same concept, only in 3d.

Haha. No, there wasn't. Wandering around and completing tasks in barren levels/=/more to do. Galaxy's levels are far more dense with ideas.

I mean, it's fine to be nostalgic about SM64, but there's no need to make bullshit arguments.

@GreySeal9:

Na Mario is a skillful game. I've been playing the series forever. It has one of the highest skill curves out there--from beginner to advanced. It is easy to goof in 64 if you catch something at a wrong angle. Sunshine too, but flood allows for a little room for error here and there. ...but damn is sunshine underrated.

It's not a terrible list, tbh. It's certainly a reasonable list, and it is defensible in an otherwise neverending debate due to its subjective nature.

Loading Video...

^This video is a good example at what I'm talking about. Instead of having you wander around in some big ass level trying to find shit, they instead keep the design focused by having it constantly shift, and modifying the idea of using tight and focused platforming as a means of solving a kind of quasi-puzzle (leading the chomps to the holes). Then you add the spring and the doppelgangers, etc.

And this is just a single galaxy. One galaxy has a mechanic where you listen to the beat to anticipate when platforms are going to show up. There was nothing that creative in SM64.

I don't think its aged well, the game play is fine but its looks haven't aged well. Although I think about all 3D games from that generation.

@SolidGame_basic:

I will never understand the claims of Mario 64 "not aging well".

People must have no skill to say that.

I don't think its aged well, the game play is fine but its looks haven't aged well. Although I think about all 3D games from that generation.

I actually think it looks fine. It's pretty blurry but the simple shapes, cartoonish character designs and bright colors still manage to not be ugly whereas realistic games of that era look like a hot mess.
