Check it out, guys!

The first review score for Ground Zeroes has been released and has caused a bit of controversy, as some are arguing that the review history of the publication that reviewed it renders the score meaningless.

don't feel like looking, you need to put a spoiler in your OP revealing the score so we can just skip if we decided not to look at the vid.

The video is only one minute and twenty six seconds long. C'mon, bro.

Cant even watch the vid on mobile...

How about like a summary with pros/cons and what the score is.

Famitsus game scores have been pretty irrelevant for a while. At least in my eyes. That being said, I'm still looking forward to this game. I think the price drop made me very favorable to it.

Not just that, but I've never been let down by MGS. I'm buying it regardless. But I try to keep some multiplat franchises with one console brand, I know I'm weird. I'm going to have to wait until I get my PS4 to play this then.

Seems like the PS4 version is getting a lot more attention. That's probably the way to go. Cheers, mate.

Oh..its famitsu...old and already seen. Famitsu gives these scores out like candy.

Yeah my MGS is all on PS, so I keep it there. Like my Hitman games are all on Xbox with exception of first. Just sucks I gotta wait, because my laptop is shot and I need that for school, so buying that first.

38/40 for an overpriced $40 demo that can be finished in 15 minutes, sad, they really should just make this an MGS5 pre-order promotion

anyhow, I learned my lesson with MGS4, I'll just watch a playthrough on YouTube since it'll probably be like 75% cutscenes anyways

I take it that's your video. Good job though, you spoke very clearly and kept a good pace. Keep it up.

Famitsu is known to be a hype outlet though. I know people always bicker about which places are credible and which are not, but I think everyone understands how Famitsu reviews work by now. Pretty much meaningless.

I'm already getting the game on PS4 so it's nothing against Ground Zeroes, but I wouldn't take this review into account if I were on the fence.

It's actually $20 digital and $30 retail. There is no $40 price point anymore.

It's also been speed run in 15 minutes by a Kojima Productions staff member. Somebody who probably beat the mission dozens of times at least. Most players seem to be averaging about 2 hours on the first play of that mission, but only scratching the surface on the content. I can confirm this myself, unfortunately my willpower was low and I ended up watching this mission get played multiple times over. Then there are 5 additional missions after that. In total, people seem to be clearing all the missions in about 8 hours, but are still sitting with low completion percentages like 30-40%.

As for cutscenes, again, unfortunately I watched it all. There are only two, one at the beginning and one at the end. Both very short by MGS standards. Technically there is one about half way through, but it lasts about a minute. Most of the story is presented through optional audio-logs that you can listen to while playing and they are actually very well done.

To be clear, I'm not trying to talk you into buying it. The value will really depend on the person and it seems you've already made up your mind. I just think it's gotten out of hand with people calling this a $40 15 minute demo when it's really a $20 8 hour game with lots of replay value

They lowered the price to $30. Have you played the game by the way?

@sandbox3d:

That's good to hear man. I was buying it anyways, but still.

I caught some of the streams before they got taken down, but the ending was censored out every time. Did you see it? And if so, is it really as shocking as all these sites are hyping it to be? (no spoilers though, plz).

Also, what'd you think of the CQC? It looked very dynamic. A lot of the stuff I saw was so good it looked scripted even though it wasn't at all. VERY hyped here lol.

Well I'll say this. The ending could have been shocking. Not mind blowing like some people have made it out to be, but it would have had a kick to it. One problem though. If you've kept up with the trailers, you've already seen a bit too much. I won't say any more.

I would say the contents of the audio-logs, particularly audio-log #4, are the real shockers. This is a very dark MGS game. Much more serious in tone than what I've come to expect from this series.

CQC is very impressive, yes. So is the gunplay. The enemy AI is also very impressive as is the new alert/evasion/caution mode. So much more natural than before.

Overall, it seems MGS is headed in a very good direction. The gameplay looks great, both stealth and action. The sandbox gameplay is finally fully realized. The cutscenes are brief and to the point (so far) and the optional audio-logs are a great way to present story in MGS.

I know it's too early to celebrate, but based on Ground Zeroes it seems that Phantom Pain stands a good chance of being the best MGS yet.

Haha, keep the hype down man!

I agree though, things are looking good. I didn't know there were other tapes to listen to, I did hear the one that the game triggers automatically after the first rescue but that was it.

Sucks about the ending I kind of figured they were showing too much.

Man that CQC though! I'm so fixated on it lol. And you can make patrols call their buddies for back-up... man the traps I'm going to set, shits gonna be fun as hell.

I could see some interesting potential for that. Unfortunately every time I saw it in use it was someone doing it by mistake and getting themselves caught.

I guess since we're discussing this stuff anyways, I know a lot of people are wondering about the enemy tagging and reflex mode. At first glance they looked like a cheap crutch to me. And when I heard they could be disabled I was really glad. After seeing so much play time, even from skilled players, they don't seem like a crutch at all.

Enemy search paths are very wide and unpredictable compared to previous games as are their actions. You never know when a guard will diverge from his path and quickly shine a flash light in your direction. They can also see much further than before (though it does seem their peripheral is still limited) and if they think they see something, they won't just say "what was that?.... must be seeing things.." like before. They'll come investigate and may even alert others to their suspicion even if you didn't got spotted. Certainly not new for stealth games, but it's a step up for MGS. To make all these matters worse, it seems that many patrols travel in pairs. And there are lots of them.

All this to say that it's very easy to get spotted. Being able to tag and manage enemy locations isn't really as cheap as it sounds. Personally, I'll try going without it at first since I don't like the clutter, but I may change my mind.

Reflex mode. I pulled a full 180 on this one. I thought it was a terrible idea at first, but now I see how damn cool it is. It's not going to save your ass in every situation. Actually, it seems you have to be lucky to get a free pass from it. It seems to really shine when planned though. I saw plenty of cool combos pulled off with it. For example, coming up a hallway behind three guards, you can 'freeze' the first one, while he's leaning to put his weapon down you can run up and combo CQC the other two and just when the first soldier realizes what's going on, things slow down giving you enough time to either head shot him or combo into a 3rd CQC slam. That's just one of many cool examples I saw. It's a lot like mark and execute from the newer SC games, but not so automated. It gives you a chance to pull off some really cool stuff that would otherwise be impossible, but it doesn't hold your hand in doing so. I definitely won't be disabling this feature.

Sounds cool man. I dunno though, I'll still probably try going without either at first... just doesn't feel right. I might give reflex a shot though.

Hehe. I move my hands around because I feel awkward just being a talking head, so to speak. Also, moving my hands helps me pace myself when talking.

The only gripe I have about MGS5 is that Snake seems more like Rambo than your typical stealthy infiltrator.
