Mass Effect 3 had RPG system and stuff, big and large.

Demons souls was easy game, too linear and no PRG ELEMENTS AT ALL!!!

Why is that? Because of the ending? If so that sill leaves like 99% of the game being awesome, and I personally was done caring by my 2nd or 3rd playthrough.

Xenoblade is a downright incredible experience (and I don't use that word often to describe a game). that wins, although dark Souls is also really good.

Dark Souls, out of those. Never played Xenoblade, and while MS3 is a good game, i think it's the worst of the trilogy.

For me it would be Skyrim, ME1 and TW2.

I'm surprised Mass Effect 3 is leading... I thought Dark Souls would be leading... unless people are voting ME3 as a representative of the whole trilogy?

Why is ME3 winning by so much. :s The other two are far better (in different ways). I voted Dark Souls but would go Xenoblade just as easily.

This as it was much better than Dark Souls as the whole Poise system broke Dark Souls.

While ME3 may have had the least RPG gameplay elements, it more than made up in the choices aspect. RPG's are more than stats and numbers. You decided the fate of entire races, characters, and an entire universe. If that doesn't count as ''Role-playing'', then what does?

Not at all. Its a give and take system between poise, defense, and roll speed. If you're wearing nothing but a loin cloth and fast rolling you deserve to get stun locked by hits from heavy weapons. Its one of the few things that make strength builds even possible.

By "elements" we really mean mechanics. And while mechanics alone don't define a genre (otherwise we'd be calling COD an RPG) stats and leveling do have a function in RPGs, in how we get that character growth and progression. One of the satisfying components to the game is starting out weak and feeling that sense of empowerment, when at first we struggle to fight wolves but can later tackle 16' knights and dragons.

But while so many people place great emphasis on the stats and leveling, it often gets overlooked that it's only one side of the coin. The other half being the players interaction with the world around him/her, and through this interaction defining their character as an extension of themselves and taking that direct involvement in the story. The essence of "role playing"

But in ME3's defense of its mechanics, it strikes me that most people confuse "diminishing" with "streamlining". And that's quite a difference. While it doesn't follow traditional formulas (such as attributes like STR, DEX, INT, or skills like lock picking and herbalism) the RPG genre in general shouldn't be limited to age old models.

The mechanics of ME are tailored around the context of its universe, and designed to work in an action game design (ARPG) and while being streamlined it still accomplishes the means of allowing the player to develop their character's growth. To examine this in a simple outline;

* skill differentiation in classes
* skill customization in trees, expanded in ME3 with the branching options (varying permutations)
* weapon and gear customization, mods (with increasing power tiers) for guns, configurable armor components
* non-linear story progression, missions (quests) tracked in a log
* NPC interaction (dialog and non-combat objectives)

And by "mechanics", we really mean mechanisms.

Xenoblade, amazing game, I'm playing through it now, 30 hours in and I'm pounded by quests with no end in sight.

@HoolaHoopMan: "Builds" in Dark Souls is a joke. The weapons were so unbalanced. That's what made Demon's Souls much better. The weapons were balanced perfectly with the type of build you wanted.

Nonsense. There are plenty of viable weapons and play styles to craft a character around. Granted it was much more imbalanced when it first launched, recent patches have helped it out however. Pure Dex, pure Str, Dex/Pyro, Dex/Int, and quality builds are all viable between 100-125 soul level range.

If I have any complaints its that Dex weapons are still far more useful and versatile than Str ones.

Well I found it way more enjoyable then xeno or dark souls so it got my vote.

far too many weapons in Dark Souls relied on dex. Or relied on both dex and strength. Demons didn't have this problem.

Also, Dark lacked the content for a stealth build. Mimic spell or fog ring just don't cut it. Demon's had the killer "Cloak" spell and thief ring. Nothing was more fun than stalking the host and a couple of blues throughout the level. Watching them get nervous, trying to find you. Harassing them as the are engaged with npc's, then finished them off with a "fatal" dagger back Stab. This is what was most disappointing, to me, about Dark. No stealth build.

ME3 not only made it past any other thread, it's winning this thread.

If I had to sum it up, I'd say...

Mass Effect = Action RPG + Third-Person Shooter + Visual Novel + Dating Sim

Except you could wear the heaviest of armor and still fast roll making light-medium armor worthless, and if you wore loin cloth you got stunned to death by everything not just Heavy Weapons, not to mention str builds were better in Demon Souls.
