Turn based JRPG are crap. I used to love FF, but you should grow out of like a normal person once you realize how much cooler real-time is.

well seeing as there both totally different types of game play real time and turn based.. that is just your opinion, games like oblivion are crap imo with the button mashing fps type gameplay and the really repetative quests

FFVII yeah I agree with that one. FFX maybe for the last gen era although there was some serious competition last gen. FF6 great also easily in top list of best rpg and FF5 not really.

You seem like a turn based battle can last for hours..... excpect maybe some big boss fight, normal fight versus regular monsters don't exced 1 min depending on the situation it goes very fas in majority of the battles especially in FFVII,FVIII,X-2,XII

ooo. interesting. but i dont think ill be picking it up on my ps2 im too busy on my 360 and wii now. ill have to go back and beat Tales of the abyss (which i suck at. i liked Tales of symphonia better cuase i didnt suck so much at that) anyway, im guessing that all RPGS getting boring after a while. in turn based, its probably the waiting. in action, it may be the mindless button mashing on easy opponents while your trying to solve puzzles. and on oblivion... havent played that yet.

VII was only great if you played it when it was released. Right now, it hasn't aged too well. The Tales of games are my favorite. Real time > Turn based to me.

In terms of JRPGs, FF titles are consider some of the cream of the crop. It's not off the wall thinking a FF title is the best.

As a series, I don't think so. At least not for a long time. I think Final Fantasy as a series started losing claim to that around the time Final Fantasy 7 to 9 came out. Not saying the games aren't good to really good cause they are just don't think it's considered the best series anymore. This is especially the case as I've branched out to other series over the years and remembered old favorites. Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior back on the NES), Suikoden series, Tales of , Ultima, Phantasy Star, dotHack, Star Ocean, etc. I still feel after all of these years the best Final Fantasy to be released is Final Fantasy 6 (3 on the SNES before they fixed the numbering).

I would disagree.

I found a hand full of other RPG titles that engaged me far more.  KOTOR, Diablo 2, Baldurs Gate, Deus Ex, Morrowind, Oblivion, etc.

The series hasn't evolved very much besides the transition of FF XII.

Not all 8 million subscribers think that it's the best RPG ever...and 8 million subscribers =/= 8 million active players.

But back on topic, the Final Fantasy series may be the best JRPG ever (although many also support ChronoTrigger) - but calling it the best RPG ever? That's a large assumption.

I mean, you can't even really compare JRPGs and RPGs ("WesternRPGs" sounds a bit...odd, as that includes everyone except for Japan, so I don't see the point of specifying 'the West') - they're almost entirely different genres: JRPG gameplay generally consisting of offering battle advice to a group of characters as they battle their way through a set, linear story; and RPG gameplay generally consisting of carefully crafting a character/party, and choosing how the branching story plays out through combat/non-combat options.

Basically, all I'm saying is that the TC may want to consider calling it the best JRPG ever, as the two 'genres' can't easily be compared.

Why would 8 million players subscribe to a game they're not actively playing? :|

A lot of FF games are considered some of the greatest games of all time. Although some are average (spinoffs), the series in general paved the foundation for modern RPGs.

Yeah, square seriously makes fun of their fans when it comes to the majority of spinnoffs and infity remakes of old FF games, but like you said at least their real games (FF numeral) are great.

Then the number should be drastically less than what is reported, not in a constant rise.

And if you are curious, this is what Blizzard base their subscription numbers on:

World of Warcraft's Subscriber Definition

World of Warcraft subscribers include individuals who have paid a subscription fee or have an active prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the game and are within their free month of access. Internet Game Room players who have accessed the game over the last thirty days are also counted as subscribers. The above definition excludes all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired prepaid cards. Subscribers in licensees' territories are defined along the same rules.

Just a GREAT rpg, that is all, i equally enjoy most other rpg's, FF7 had me, FF9 and 10 too, the others were simply nothing special, hope FF13 is a far better offering than the mediocre FF12
