http://www.dualshockers.com/2014/02/20/ps4-port-of-final-fantasy-xiv-has-unlocked-framerate-up-to-60-fps-at-1080p-limited-due-to-heat-issues/

Pretty interesting read, the PS4 could run the game at higher than 60 fps, however they had to cap at 60 because the PS4 heat was raising too much.

I remember that BF4 as well achieved higher than 60 fps at some parts according to eurogamer.

BF4 ran under 60fps unless you're in a corridor and no1 is shooting, in open field with tanks blowing shit up its was mostly mid to high 40's. Also, the point of going over 60fps when tvs are 60Hz is what exactly?

Whilst it is a decent looking game, it hardly pushes any boundaries. The only time it may struggle is when there are numerous battle animations going on (FATE's, large group duties). Not surprising that it can push 60fos, and possibly beyond.

The PS3 version tends to struggle with Coerthas, due to snow and battle animations.

"As long as you don’t play on an extremely high-end PC, since it’s this similar to the PC version and you’re running on the highest settings of the PC version even on PS4, your enjoyment will be unchanged."

Stunning really. SONY is pushing the hardware to its max.

I wouldn't call Final Fantasy 14 a graphically intensive game. It has nice aesthetics and the character models are good, but the game was built to run on a large variety of PCs. You could easily max it out on a 2 year old GPU at 1080p at 60fps.

Framerate limiters make sense. Anything over 60fps on your average HDTV is just a waste. Might as well cap the FPS to save on energy and heat.

FF14 will slow down during big fights though. All MMORPGs end up being CPU bottlenecked waiting for network operations during the largest fights. That's just the nature of the software.

The odd hermit? As far as framerates go, console gamers don't really care for much beyond 60FPS. Not when the majority of games are 30fps. It's just overkill.

You don't understand the first thing about processors do you? Heat is the reason that literally every processor is going the speed they are going. It isn't hard to make them run faster, it is hard to make them run faster and not burn up. That is why some PC gamers spend 100+ on cooling for PCs, they can run them faster if they can keep them down.

It's okay to explain why I'm wrong but I guess you can't do that because you have no definite answer other than "you're wrong bro". When was the last time you've seen any console gamer care about going over 60FPS. Oh right, this is the only thread ever that has bought up such a thing. But hey.. it might start up a new trend of console gamers wanting 120fps in their console games and developers would be like "WHHHAA!?".

I own a 65" LED 120Hz tv... on that note.. I played the game on the PC for a couple days... until I realized it was generic and there are much better MMO's. The fact that gear is pretty limited doesn't help the game. Anybody who disagrees... that is just fine. It isn't a bad game... but like Titanfall (while not a bad game) it grows old pretty quickly in my opinion. WAY too many kill 10 of this gather 8 of that "quests", and the travel system is pretty strange as well. Sure MMO's do that, but not usually to the extent this game does. Gameplay itself like attacks and abilities feel very nice however and the fluidity is great.

This is true, after gaming for years on PC, I can notice massive framerate drops.

Last night i swear my BF4 dropped to about 25-30 FPS on the PS4, it got so choppy, but this was on conquest and crap was going on everywhere.

I can't max it :/

Also the reason why you have lag or stutter in ARR is cause how they do their data stream which MMO's are suppose to go your data > data center > your data, while in ARR it is data center > your data > data center.

This.

And also, HDMI 1.4 doesn't have the bandwidth for 120fps at 1080p, so anything more than 60fps is a waste of time, really.

I thought the HDMI output on the PS4 was locked at 60Hz. That's why it doesn't support 3-D video right now.

I wonder if this means there's some design fault with the GPU outputting above this......

This is rather silly... there is no meaningful difference between the two. I'm sure if you dipped the PS4 into liquid nitrogen you'd get even more out of the hardware too...

I doubt it, it's just an issue of physics. The hardware has a pretty fixed performance per watt and a safe thermal envelope (TDP), and the higher the wattage the more heat that needs to be dissipated, and with the small form factors of console those thermal envelopes are going to be hit sooner rather than later.

so people can complain about judder and for others to believe that their "240hz" or "600hz" TV's, which is just a post process, can brag about their TV's being able to handle higher frame-rates.

Is a MMO, it shouldn't have over the top graphics. MMOs usually have a crapload of players plus npcs on screen. My PC would handle the game just fine when running around alone and would start to dip when on fates.

Sure you can have awesome graphics on a corridor game with at most 10 characters on screen but a MMO is the complete opposite of that.

TVs that have high Hz rates are usually not the same as a PC monitor. They tend to blur frames to try create a more seamless looking image

This. MMO's aren't supposed to have high-end graphics. Not only would it lead to a lot of lag when you have loads of stuff on screen, but the game would also lose a large audience who don't own high-end PC's. As far as MMO graphics goes, FFXIV is as good as it gets.

FF14's graphics are terrible though, a 5 year old PC can max it out at 1080p/60fps

I rarely get above 40 FPS with ARR on my PC, hell I'm lucky if I get a good steady 30 FPS, with medium settings and spell effects turned off (except mine). When someone says you can max setting ARR with a 5 year computer I find it funny, cause that's exactly how hold my PC is (maybe 2 months over 5 years) and ARR decimates my computer specially in fates.

As a MMO vet I do have to say ARR is a pretty damn good looking game for a MMO though.

i just hope it doesn't have the lag issues that the PS3 currently has. It makes fights like titan hm/ex so much harder than they need to be.

Pretty interesting read, the PS4 could run the game at higher than 60 fps, however they had to cap at 60 because the PS4 heat was raising too much.

I remember that BF4 as well achieved higher than 60 fps at some parts according to eurogamer.

It's not BF4

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-whats-fixed-and-whats-not-in-the-cod-ghosts-ps4-patch

Update: Having reviewed the patch captures, there's an odd issue with tearing which caused some confusion, but we're fairly convinced now that in the revised version of the game at least, any judder is down to frame-rate drops and not the game running faster than 60Hz.

Eurogamer has retracted thier>60 fps.

If TDP is not cap'ed, 925 Mhz clock speed and it's equipped better cooling, it could have a near R9-270 level GPU.
