The first batch of Mario Kart 8 DLC has released, and with it, Mario Kart has finally broken part the constraints of being Mario Kart, and has taken the first steps towards becoming a Nintendo all stars Super Kart Bros. Super Smash Kart. Something of that sort.
The new DLC adds three new characters, six new vehicles, and eight new tracks, and you know what the highlight of all of this is? The crossover content that is introduced to the game with the DLC. One of the tracks is Mute City from F-Zero X, which you may remember playing on your N64 (or, more likely, as a stage in Super Smash Bros.). Another track is Hyrule Castle, which sees you racing through the locales of Hyrule, trying to jump at that Master Sword, and collecting all the rupees on the track. Check it out:
Apart from that, one of the karts is Captain Falcon's Blue Falcon, one of them is a bike for Link that is called, I shit you not, the Master Bike, plus we have the SNES Rainbow Road returning (bringing the total count of Rainbow Roads in the game to three).
It's basically amazing value all around, adding loads of great new content to an already great game for a stupidly cheap price, and also expanding its scope in the process. It is also a rare instance of DLC done right (in the week that Assassin's Creed Unity released with $95 'micro' transactions, it stands as a fascinating study in contrast).
Anyway, enough of the gushing. Are you getting it? I just played through both of the cups, and I can tell you, they're hilariously fun, not least because of the incongruity.
Anyway, guys... I ask you to welcome our Nintendo Kart overlords:
