It's precisely one half of a point difference.

Or 0.5 difference in decimal notation.

If you want to be serious, the question is really unanswerable. A game can be docked or given points for a variety of reasons including poor story, glitches, less than stellar controls, etc.

8.5 is a number that is equal to 8 1s in the decimal system, with a .5 added on to it, the .5 denoting a half of 1, or to be specific, 5 tenths.

9 is a number that is equal to 9 1s in the decimal system.

The diffrence between these two numbers is equal to .5, or 5 tenths, as 90 tenths - 85 tenths = 5 tenths.

I hope this clears up you're math problem in an in-depth enough way, but I have to ask, why are you posting it here on System Wars?

Obvious sarcastic response aside.... the difference is on the breakdown. The total score is made up of, in theory, an average of different areas like sound, graphics, fun, etc.

So an 8.5 game might have poor gameplay but high scores in other areas, for example. Where a nine might have exact same high scores, but with a higher gameplay score. So the average is higher.

System Wars way:
8.5 -- "FLOP", not worth your money. Only AAA games are allowed to be enjoyed here. Bad score.
9.0 -- "AMAZING!" totally worth it, good score. Worth your money and time.
Normal Way:
0.5 difference that doesnt even matter. Its the Text of the review that matters, not the score.

those are both lies and you know it. it hasn't been remotely like that for a very long time, now people just ignore any sort of hype system and claim that reviewers are biased, and that no matter what it's a good game because "*I* think so."

Hasnt happened recently eh? So people arent saying because Fable 2 only got a 8.5 that its a "flop"? Last I checked, here in SW flop always ment a pass because it didnt live up to the hype.

The only reason youre right about the opposite (which is what I said) is because the only game that have gotten a 9+ lately was Deadspace. Everyone pretty much agree'd that it was a good game. But you wait a month, the PS3 owners are going to say Gears is overrated and overscored when it gets its AAA rating, and the 360 owners are going to say Resistance 2 is overscored and overrated when it gets a AAA rating.

8.5 = terrible, not worth your money, laughable.

9.0 = compareable to the second coming, worth 3 times the price, amazing.

8.5 = Underrated.

9.0 = Overrated.

Actually they are, there wasnt an official thread, and I wasnt about to go digging through 20+ page threads to find the specific quotes where people were already calling it a flop. Fortunately someone made a thread and SW here on GS disgruntledly agree's the game flopped.

Though I am grateful that Kevin VanOrd didnt review it. Judging by the way he was talking about it on the hotspot, he probably would have given it a 7.

8.5 = flop
9.0 = Passable
