Microsoft demos Windows 10 apps running on Xbox One

Hosted web apps are also coming to Microsoft's next operating system

Microsoft revealed in January that it is bringing universal apps to the Xbox One, but the company didn't demonstrate how they would look and feel. That changed today at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Microsoft's technical lead for Windows universal apps, Kevin Gallo, took to the stage during a developer event to demonstrate Windows 10 universal apps on Xbox One. While it wasn't a universal app like Mail or Photos, Gallo demonstrated a demo app designed to run across PCs, phones, and an Xbox One.

It was all part of a broader message to developers that Microsoft is building a scalable and adaptive user interface for Windows 10 to make it easier for universal apps to run across PCs, phones, tablets, and even TV screens via the Xbox One. Gallo didn't expand on when developers will be able to start creating Xbox One apps, but The Verge understands Microsoft is ready to allow any developer to build apps for its gaming console. The software giant will detail its plans at the upcoming Build developer conference in April, and developers should be able to build Xbox One apps during the summer period.

Gallo also revealed that Microsoft is planning to use hosted web apps in Windows 10. It's a new way for developers to bring their websites to the Windows Store, with Cortana integration and access to notifications, contacts, calendar, and camera. It could be a key way for Microsoft to secure more apps with an easy investment from developers. Gallo discussed Microsoft's adaptive user interface, which is essentially a way to allow developers to create responsive apps in a similar way to how web developers are currently designing websites.

The hosted web apps builds on the popularity of responsive websites, and Microsoft will essentially be allowing developers to just wrap them into a simple app for the Store. If they want to move to more powerful features then there's the option to move their responsive work and code into a full universal app for Windows 10 that can run across PCs, tablets, phones, and Xbox One.

the Xbox One is sounding more and more future proof with every little bit of information releasing lately. with the Windows 10 OS making its way to the console in the future its going to open some unexpected doors for the the system than realized. better dev accessibility...evolving web apps/universal apps. good stuff here for Xbox guys.

Forgive my ignorance, but what are universal apps? Are we going to see email and maps on the Xbox One, are those even "universal apps"?

Thats nice and all, but guess what I'm never buying a console for? As for future proof, future proof for apps? Woopdeedoo. Shame they can't upgrade the crappy hardware.

do you need an Xbox One to play the complete list of games though, every game? if yes, then all those games being on one CONSOLE has value.

unless you want to upgrade your pc and pair it up with another console...but even then you won't be able to play the complete list of games there.

@R3FURBISHED:

Universal App is basically apps that can be run on desktop/laptop/tablet/phone/xbox. It runs on Metro environment since Win8.

Yes, Photo and Mail app on Win10 are universal apps. Not just Metro apps, but, also universal. Aka, it is exactly the same code on desktop and phone.

XboxOne is always on the murky side because it doesn't share the same store as desktop or phone. And MS previously said it will go through Xbox approval process instead of self-publishing. However, it is expected that the rule will change in this year, allowing people to easily publish universal apps on XboxOne.

You can separately publish metro app on desktop and phone. If you are universal app, it gets an additional icon in the store, so, user instantly know the same app is on other device without searching the app in the store.

Good response

Microsoft is still focusing on their "centerpiece" idea for the Xbox One

I don't understand why MS is pushing mobile apps on a console. Does anybody use them?

@magicalclick:

The article is just about standardizing apps and operating systems to perform on all MS platforms.

My point is we already have a bunch of worthless mobile apps ported to X1 and they are pretty useless on a console.

So why should we care about more worthless mobile apps on consoles?

@blue_hazy_basic: unfortunately you are too stuck in the past. The market has moved in from consoles for just game players. People want more out of their consoles therefore, there's a reason why consoles during the previous Gen were also entertainment hubs because the market demanded it.

There's a reason why pure gaming consoles don't exist anymore

You're right, the PlayStation 4 is the current generation console leader.

It's leading in lack of innovation, lack of platform evolution, lack of updates, lack of features, lack of applications, lack of media functionality and it's especially leading in regards to the most flopped games. Oh but I forgot, it leading in sales figures which are entirely lacking relevance to the consumer base is of the utmost importance, forgive me.

now see, that makes me feel good. Thank you, you amazing wonderful WONDERFUL squirrel :) Hey, love's allrrriigghhttt!

i like and use a quite a few of the apps myself...espn, HBOgo, Netflix, youtube, huluplus, twitch, bleacher report, GoPro is interesting, Vine, nfl app, Amazon, upload studio, one drive, Pandora...they just added an IGN app Tuesday. The E-Sports League app i finally tried out the other day seems really cool for gamers. I don't know...i don't see why you don't feel the need for ANY of them. They add a lot to the console in my opinion. Especially when snapped.

I
