Lacks originality, but technically impressive.
I'm not saying you're wrong, but what makes you feel that way, and what in your opinion would have originality in this sort of thing?
There's just no character to the design. It is the most basic of basic in terms of color and shape. That footage they showed looks like it could fit in any real world game out there. I can see the sci fi inspiration, but there's nothing that distinguishes it.
When you look at Halo, you know it is Halos world. When you look at Mario you know it is Marios World. People often say "well, Halo looks cartoony and Marios visuals are too childish." Fact of the matter is that in reality these two games are some of the more complex games, artistically.
I disagree, unless by 'character' you simply mean unrealistic.
What is amazing about Epic's artstyle, and why I personally feel it IS fairly original, is that their environments can tell many stories just by looking at them. Each surface or pipe looks like it has a real function, rooms look like they have been lived in, even if they are clean, every nook, cranny and gap looks deliberate and with purpose, unlike a lot of games where they will stick a vent here because it looks cool, or a pipe there because there hasn't been any for a few paces.
Combined with that, there is the staggeringly good technical power of the Unreal 4 engine and I feel you have a winner.
