Poll Engine Wars? Who will win? (64 votes)

ID tech 6 6%
Unreal Engine 4 61%
Source Engine 2 16%
CryEngine (new generation) 17%

Hello,

All these are major engines coming out so which one you think will be best? they all will most likely become graphics king of respected games. i cant wait to see more of them. i hope ID tech 6 will not fail like ID tech 5 but i think source engine 2 will be by far best ever. source engine after 10 year is still incredible. probably GOAT engine.

further more anything will made is greatest thing ever in existence.

Regards

Don't really care as long as they fix the unreal engine in this version, many games had streaming problems with version 3.

Unreal Engine 4 is outright the best. Just because it streamlines a lot of the process, allowing high fidelity graphics with smaller budgets.

Also, "GOAT engine" makes no sense, man. Game of all time engine?

Source 2 Engine . It will not only be groundbreaking like the original (I hope so) but Valve also confirmed that it'll be easily accessible , which will make it a favorite choice for user generated contents .

In terms of market share UE4 and Unity had it pretty much covered.

None of those will be graphics king. THose will belong to engines made for specific games.

Popularity wise..Unity will win for smaller projects, Unreal for big expensive ones. Nothing else will matter long term

That said, I see a push for more inhouse engines among big publishers and I expect it to only strenghten with time.

Ah well, I've only seen it on SW and no wheres else, and it's always standed for "game of all time" in those cases.

We can only go by their track record. Source still stutters to this day. id tech 5 engine was a "controller use only" engine. Crytek is no longer relevant. Unreal wins.

People rave about Arkham Knights graphics but no one raved about Doom 4's graphics.

The Ubisoft "**** a dick" engine.

Sorry.. I don't know what came over me...

I think the real name is "We'll push our engine to the limits for trailers than downgrade it once you get it in your hands-engine" or some abbreviation of that...

It was used in Far Cry 3, Watch Dogs and the upcoming Unity, Far Cry 4 and The Devision

Nah, in all seriousness though. AC: Unity's engine is really impressive. As is the Frostbite engine

Didn't even know that...

Anyway, why are people voting on engines we haven't even seen yet: Source 2 and ID tech 5 ?

That's the point. Arkham Knight is using a modified 3.5 not even 4 and it looks to be the new graphics king.

for me, its a tricky one between ue4 and ce3.

@magicalclick said:

UE4. SDK is free. And the license fee is as cheap as Unity. Of course, UE4 has amazing tools to build games, and bunch of 3rd party plugins. So UE4 IMO.

As for people talking about streaming issue. Hmmm, that's hardware limitation and a Feature. Texture streaming is used to avoid loading screens. And better hardware does stream faster.

sorry i just want to check something, is it possible to get the ue4 sdk for free? on epics website it seems i can get udk (ue3) free, but not the one for ue4.

i'm pretty keen to have a look. wish they did a free trial or something.

Just shows that talent > engine at times

Like Batman Arkham Knight looks way better than Daylight, which was using UE4 XD

The Daylight devs chose UE 4 because of procedural generation not because of graphics.

its going to be hard to beat UE4 in terms of the number of games that use it.

so many developers have a lot of experience with it now and epic have also helped ensure that more people can get familiar with it. the engine also runs on pretty much everything (the wiiu, vita and 3DS being the only exceptions i can think of). it even has mac and linux covered now so developers wont lose out if one of those takes off.

i dont know if itll be the most advanced engine in terms of getting the best out of the hardware its running on but i cant see it being unpopular.

unigine could also be a pleasent surprise. its not an engine that strikes me as ultra advanced (though its certainly no slouch) but it seems to be the engine of choice for smaller projects. it has many of the same benefits as UE4: runs on anything (including the wiiu), anyone can learn on it without a massive paywall and doesnt seem to bog the developers down with complexity but, in terms of licencing, i think its more tempting to smaller developers.

i think those 2 will be the big engines in terms of 3rd party middleware.

i think bethesda will move all their projects to ID tech. it makes no sense to be developing that engine while also buying in licences for other engines. its just not efficent. so we could very well see the next fallout and elder scrolls along with the next doom running on ID tech.

i think that will also be a similar theme for the big publishers. they are just going to have 1 engine to run all their games. EA are doing it with frostbite and i wouldnt be surprised to see ubisoft whittle down their tech base to just 1 or 2 engines over the next year.

1. Unreal 4

2. ID TECH 6

3. Show drop

4. Luminous

5. Source 2

6. Phanta Rhei

7. Cryengine

8. Ignite

9. UE3

10. ????

While games with big budgets using one of these engines will surely be good looking games, the best games tend to use custom engines developed in house. See Naughty Dog, Guerilla, RE5, etc.

Source 2 is specifically being built with user generated content in mind. With this, coupled with steam, chances are it could be widely more successful than Source was (even though it was moderately successful).
