http://hexus.net/gaming/news/industry/73749-ea-generate-1-billion-add-on-content-sales-year/

Electronic Arts is anticipating that it will generate at least $1 billion in revenue from selling add-on content across all of its games and platforms this year, according to a Bloomberg report.

EA has high hopes for its digital add-on content sales this year, especially its sports series DLCs. Madden NFL 15 and other EA Sports titles are expected to be "major" contributors to earnings, EA spokesman John Reseburg said. He confirmed that DLC sales such as 'Ultimate Teams' in Madden have grown 350 per cent year-on-year in the quarter ending 30th June, though he declined to mention if he thought sales would continue to be as strong.

Analyst Doug Creutz of Cowen & Co. expects 'Ultimate Teams' Madden DLC sales to total more than $50 million, adding significantly to the game's projected sales revenue of $300 million.

Other major upcoming EA games we are expecting this year include FIFA 15, NHL 15, The Sims 4 and Dragon Age: Inquisition. We presume that these new games will also be supported by a variety add-on content in the form of DLC and IAPs (in-app purchases). However, with EA's fiscal year 2015 ending in March next year, we have a bit to wait until we find out if the games publisher hits its financial goals.

In related news, in an effort to stabilise its virtual economy, EA has laid down stricter rules as it bans coin sellers and card-trading bots. Last month we heard that EA had been judged by the UK's Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) to have gone too far, it had mislead customers in offering a free Dungeon Keeper game which was severely limited without money being paid on IAPs.

They might as well switch to what Valve does and release DLC and microtransactions instead of new games.

Nah, just release half finished games then charge for the content to finish them.

At least they aren't price whores like Activision. Singularity is a mediocre shooter from 2010 and it's msrp is $30. ME 3 came out 2 years later, sold much better and it's $20 msrp.

Well, it's good when any company makes money. Without it, it would go bankrupt. So...Good for EA.

And people complain about dlc? Sales show people love dlc. In fact most ea games themselves are dlc just sold as full price games.

Anita Sarkeesian mirrors edge 2.

Apparently EA has told Dice to listen to what she has to say and implement it into the game...I have a bad feeling about this one...

Their cash is from taking out content before a game releases and then charging extra for it as "DLC".

I'm 38 years old I beginning to think it's time to move on from video games. I have a video game collection that spans 30 years. I should sell it and buy a fishing boat. I'm really starting to hate the industry. I hate dlc microtransaction paid subscriptions online multiplayer. This hobby just aint for me anymore. I think the internet is the worst thing to happen to gaming. I should sell my games while the market is up.

Oh, it's the height of fashion to bash EA.

Though, they brought me a good deal of fun in gaming last gen. Let's see, through the gen I bought:

  • Mass Effect 1 (when I got the PS3 trilogy)
  • Mass Effect 2
  • Mass Effect 3
  • Dead Space
  • Dead Space: Extraction
  • Dead Space: Ignition
  • Dead Space 2
  • Dead Space 3
  • Battlefield Bad Company
  • Battlefield Bad Company 2
  • Battlefield 1943
  • Battlefield 3
  • Battlefield 4
  • Army of Two
  • Army of Two: 40th Day
  • Need For Speed: Most Wanted
  • Need For Speed: Criterion
  • Sims 3
  • Fight Night Round 3
  • NBA Jam
  • NBA Jam: On Fire Edition
  • NFL Blitz
  • Mirror's Edge
  • Crysis 2
  • Medal of Honor: Airborne
  • Medal of Honor (2010)
  • Medal of Honor: Warfighter
  • Syndicate
  • Bulletstorm
  • Dante's Inferno
  • Saboteur
  • Boom Boom Rocket
  • Lord of the Rings: Battle For Middle Earth II

They also helped porting/publishing/distributing:

  • Portal: Still Alive
  • Portal 2
  • Left 4 Dead
  • Left 4 Dead 2
  • Orange Box

And about the only disappointment I had in the experience might have been Saboteur. That's a 97% satisfactory rating from games of theirs I got and thoroughly enjoyed and had no issues with for DLC. So boo-hoo, sucks people can't enjoy good gaming. Sucks the only way they can pluck the vibe of social consciousness is by joining a mob of mindless automatons.

As for DLC, I'd say I only really bought DLC for Mass Effect, Pinnacle Station, Bring Down the Sky, and the ME2 expansion DLC to play through before ME3. Battlefield 2: Vietnam DLC... that's it. I didn't feel my arm was twisted in getting any of that, I don't feel cheated in the slightest. Yet everyone bitches about EA and microtransactions like they're the payday loan industry.

@clyde46: It's not the gaming population on the internet. We "internet warriors" are a vocal minority. Always have been. Hell look at Watch Doge.

Sucks, because i'm always extremly carefull with buying DLC, or even season passes if ever. Nowadays it seems the rule is to wait for the GOTY/deluxe/definitive/ultimate/complete/whatever edition that has all the DLC inside it.

It's like the Mars/Snickers bar. People pay 20% more for Snickers and Mars throughout the past few years. Why? Cause we tricked you. You didn't notice that, did you?

Well that is because of you. If you had checked the weight it says 51g or 48g, not 58g. So don't hate us, hate yourself. Companies? We can do anything we want to you. Because business. You are supposed to blame nobody but yourself. Congratulations on your education.

Please smile. You buy more that way.

I prefer Mr Choc from Lidl... except the orange cake bars, those give me really bad stomach acid.
