"An important thing to remember is that next-gen consoles will most likely not be backwards compatible, he added. And if you [play] multiplayer on a game, you'll most likely not be able to play with someone on a different generation. http://www.gamesradar.com/ea-next-gen-consoles-unlikely-be-backwards-compatible/?utm_source=fb&utm_medium=emp&utm_campaign=inextgenconsolesunlikelybackwardscompatible How scandalous! :o I dont care really as I'm not getting rid of my last gen consoles anytime soon.

EA have next-gen devkits so they certainly have more knowledge than you do on the issue.

Why would I buy a new system to play old games? I don't get rid of old consoles any more.

when a new console comes out, there USUALLY aren't that many games to play for that new console. given that, many people play games from the previous console. it'd be NICE if you could play both kinds of games one console rather than switch back and forth sure it's not the worst thing int the world, but, like i said, it's be nice.

This is why I haven't touched PSN or XBLA, I love having all my eggs in one basket; Steam.

Steam is not ideal either due to operating system issues in the future, but it's the most future proof place atm. And on Steam I can simply play windowed mode low res, meanwhile older games look like poo on the HDTV.

Hehe EA don't see WiiU as Next Gen

because it doesn't show dem nose hairs.

But seriously, Everyone by now should know that Sony nor Microsoft care about Backwards Compatibilty.

They would just release an "HD collection" for people who want to play their old games, or transfer Digital Sales over, but the Physical Media will get left behind (ala PSVita)

Nintendo is the only company that would go to great lengths for Backwards Compatibilty, but only to an extent. Eventually they will drop it. (ala Gameboy Advance to DS to DSi and Wii pre-2010 and Wii Post 2010.)

I really think 720 will be BC... They are copying alot of the 360 specs and modernizing them if the rumors are true.

Now it would hold true for PS4. But as long as Sony re-releases games in 1080p 60 FPS, 3D with touched up textures... Then I would re-buy them at a reasonable price.

Actually they could have limited BC with the games that only used the PPE of the cell, but they could send the SPE workloads back to the gpu. But that would take alot of effort and coding to do so. They might just go meh just buy a PS3 for for PS3 games.

EA is garbage.  They know nothing.  PS4 will definitely be backwards compatible and will be the greatest console in history.  Sony knows they have to put 100% into this next console, so to imagine what they can do is kind of scary.  I'd invest in Sony stock NOW before it skyrockets to $150 a share.

I imagine the PS4 to have no BC, the 720 might. This is because of the big architecture change from PS3 to PS4. The 720 is far more akin to a 360, just stronger so BC might be easier on that. Sony can't really afford to funnel money into BC

You're still going from a PowerPC processor to an x64 processor and a major change in the graphical API (using straight up DX11 now).

I'm praying for PS2 BC on the PS4 since PS2 has very unreliable disc drives. I have the newest PS2 slim and after only 2 years the disc drive is already starting to fail and I have so many PS2 games I want to play like: Persona 3, Ar Tonelico, Disgaea, Atelier Iris Eternal Mana, Xenosaga Trilogy! I bought all those games because I wanted to play them not collect them.

I really want the PS4 to be backwards compatible although I am not expecting the PS4 to be backwards compatible. Regardless, I still want the PS4 even if it's not backwards compatible.

It would be nice if the PS4 was backwards compatible with PS1, PS2 and PS3. I think what Sony should do is offer 2 models: one that is backwards compatible and one without it. Or they should maybe offer add-on that has the cell chip and the GPU and maybe even the PS2 chips. that can be attached inside an expansion slot or some kind of expansion bay in the back or something like that.

Either way, there should be the option. There should be choices. Am I right or am I wrong? I wonder if Sony developed PS2 emulation software yet. lol

So what about all those arcade games I bought? All the DLC? When my 360 dies on me, will all of that just disappear into thin air? I think I'll just skip the next gen. Sounds terrible so far.

i find this a joke from MS/Sony. Why? because they have all the coding and everything to make it happen.

i find it funny that some of you people think it can't happen.

Sony allowed it on first set of ps3's then removed the feature, MS only has a list of 100 or so games you could do.

Why would I buy a new system to play old games? I don't get rid of old consoles any more.

jimkabrhel

IT would be nice to save space and only have one or two consoles plugged into your tv at a given time. With my set-up, it would be a tremendous hassle to unplug my ps3 from the wall outlet behind my display and plug in the new console every time I want to switch between playing their libraries.

I agree! Also, you would not have to worry about not being able to play your old games if your old system breaks.

While I don't expect every console to be backward compatible, it sure is a nice feature. Just because I buy a new console doesn't mean I completely stop playing games from last generation. And given the option, I'd rather be able to play old and new games on the same machine rather than be forced to keep the old machine. Again, backwards compatibility isn't a huge issue for me, lack of backwards compatibility isn't going to make me avoid buying a console, but it really is a nice feature to have.

Well since the 360 and Wiiu have no games, use one of those inputs. Problem solved.

I remember when Sony was saying that people only bought a PS3 to play PS3 games and yet they decided to re-release PS2 classics in HD and on the PSN store.

How is your drive failing? You may just need to take the cover off the PS2 and blow it out with air and clean the lens.

That's so lame....

I can have my entire collection of movies/music/books on a single device, and my entire PC collection on my single PC. I have access to pretty much all recorded works of the last century available at the tip of my fingers.

But if I want to have legal access to the last 22 years of my life of console/handheld gaming I need to own like 15 different devices.

I honestly think it's a serious problem that should be address. If a console isn't backwards compatible then the console makers should ensure that their entire past library is available for purchase, or re-download on their future consoles (if not compatible in disk format).

I'm not someone who forgets about good games once a new generation rolls over, and age really isn't a factor to me when I look to buy a new game. I'd love to have a single console that I can enjoy the history of console gaming on as well as the present.

I think Sony will use Gaikai to stream PS3 games so they won't have to spend money having a PS3 emulator inside the PS4. They'll probably sell it as a subscription or something.

Would be stupid if true. I know people could always just keep their older console's, but considering the vast library of games the PS3/Xbox have made up over the year's it would be a shame to dump it.

it would be stupid if none of the other ones would be backward compatible, i think they would actually make more money off it if they were
