As a publicly traded company, EA has to release it's financial history to the public so that investors have access to the data they need to make sound investment decisions - or at least informed ones ;)

Well, the adjusted report from EA (non-GAAP) tells a story that might be of interest to the "PC IS DEAD!" crowd here in system wars.

This story paints the PC as the leading profit creating platform for EA. That's right, one of the biggest video game publishers out there makes more money from the PC than from either current gen console. It's followed by the xbox 360, and much later by the PS3.

It's a similar story (last year at least) with Activision/Blizzard for whom PC generates most of it's profit.

Just thought I'd share :p

PC gaming will soon be extinct because it won't have Avatar-quality graphix. :P

#3 Posted by ShadowDeathX (10563 posts) -
Would you look at that then....
#4 Posted by Morrdecai (614 posts) -
And people say PC gaming is dead
#5 Posted by TrapJak (3487 posts) -

Well every consoler has a PC....

#6 Posted by ShadowDeathX (10563 posts) -

Well that is true; PC is missing some avatar-like graphicss

emI know/em

Nice find and stating what most of us already knew. I'm sure the DC will be rolling in shortly.

[insert witty comment about PC gaming being dead]

Now, you know that isn't true.

Not surprising there. Especially not for Activision Blizzard. The company that owns WoW makes most of its money from the PC? Shocker.

#11 Posted by dommeus (9192 posts) -

Probably because of The Sims. Didn't EA buy Popcap as well?

DarkLink77

Except this is EA and not Activision Blizzard.

One would think they'd put a little more effort into their PC ports considering this. Is Dead Space 2 still locked at 30 fps?

Probably because of The Sims. Didn't EA buy Popcap as well?

dommeus

Yes they did recently. Apparently, they took a 550 million$ loan for the purchase despite sitting on a sum of 2 billion$ in readily available cash.

TC mentions Acti/Blizzard which is so obvious it was pointless mentioning.

Well EA mostly makes PC games, shooters, WRPGS and sims are all made for PC

Seriously who plays FPS on controller rather than keyboard and mouse LOL

Kinda pathetic if they made most money on consoles when they are making PC games

Why do you consider 'non-GAAP' to equal PC games?
#20 Posted by razgriz_101 (16871 posts) -

considering the past 2 years we've seen a shift to more social gaming and EA have been on this bandwagon themselves aswell,on the likes of Facebook and pogo one can say its a hollow victory for hermits.

You'd THINK it WAs pointless.

But if you take a looka t any of the last 100 "I hate PC!!! I wantz to be on teh couch!!! I wantz to not crash!!!" PC bashing threads you'll find at least 10 or so posts that mention the PC makes no money and that it doesn't matter/is not relevant or is "dead" for that reason.

So no, I don't think it's pointless to make point out Activision is in the same boat as EA. Not here at least.

If you turn on vsync it locks at 30fps, otherwise no.

Seems like Q1 is always relatively weak for consoles while PC stays more steady thoughout the year. Portal 2, Crysis 2 and Dragon Age 2 were sequels to PC focused games so it's not a huge shock, I expect TOR to show up later in the year too.

In sw, it's a shocker that EA is making the majority of it's profits from the PC.

Sims is very popular of course, not that I understand why, but as mentioned the thread was meant for the "PC gaming is dying crowd".

I'm pleased to acknowledge that you're wiser than that.

If you turn on vsync it locks at 30fps, otherwise no.

topgunmv

Yeah, that's what I meant, should've been less vague ;)

I never play without V-sync and won't till I acquire a 120 Hz screen. Even then, it'll still be a matter of fps fluctuation.

Screen tearing is a major gamebreaker imho.

What are you talking about?

GAAP and non-GAP are different types of financial reports. It has nothign to do with the platform.

Activision Blizzard is in it's own country. What EA numbers am I supposed to be looking at anyway? (sorry I don't get this GAAP, non-GAAP stuff)

Did you read it? The PC brought in $154 million, the xbox is I think 4 m below that and the PS3 is like 40m below that.

#32 Posted by ShyGuy0504 (1121 posts) -

It makes sense because pcs far outnumber consoles in terms of systems sold.

where you seeing this? i've been looking at the quarterly breakdowns of net revenues and both the PS3 and 360 are higher than the PC :S

ShyGuy0504

As in Pc's in general? Well yes something like 1,000 to one easy.

If you mean gaming PC's... no one really knows. It's assumed that's true, but it's so hard to track. Do you go by discreet GPU's? That's hundreds of millions.... but are all of those being used to game? Probably not.

Ok, I looked. That is just one quarter. In the rest it has less. Is that the part?

Certainly not the 2000$ PCs we need to play flash games ;)

Based on this report for Q1 2012 the PC had revenue of $205 million. The Xbox 360 had revenue of $345 million, the PS3 had $308 million.

So you're conclusion is wrong.

He can't read a chart. It's very simple.

I think you guys are looking at the GAAP figures - or entirely in the wrong place.

The non-GAAP is what investors look at, since it's the more accurate reflection of the status of the company.

Not sure what you guys are looking at, so I can't help you.

Yeah I was referring to pcs in general not just gaming pcs. And there are a lot of casual games that can run on just about any pc made in the last 10 years.
