Debate of the day.

Let's compare:

Xbox 360 Controller

PRO:

- Comfortable design with easy to reach buttons

- Excellent placement of thumbsticks that are very comfortable

- Looks nice and comes in a variety of colors

- Triggers best for shooters, racers, and flight sims (AC6)

- Controller is sturdier

CON:

- Awful D-pad

- Harder to reach Start and Back buttons

- Shoulder buttons not as convenient

- "Xbox 360 Controller" isn't fun to say

- Requires regular battery purchase or that you buy a play and charge kit

Dualshock 3:

PRO:

- Easy to pick up and play design that anyone can use

- Controller is standardized and there aren't many games that it isn't good for

- Better D-pad

- Has basic motion sensing, leaving room for lots of fun things to come

- Built in recheargeable battery

CON:

- Only comes in black and white, and looks just like previous Dualshock designs, giving it a last-gen feel

- Your fingers tend to float off the thumbsticks

- "Triggers" aren't quite as nice

- Larger hands (such as mine) have trouble with their small fingers staying on the controller

- "Home" button isn't as easy to reach as the Xbox Guide button

- Motion sensing gets in the way in some games, not all like it there

That's all I cold think of for now, I put more cons on the Dualshock 3 but some cons have less value than others. I tried my best to be as neutral as possible. As for my own opinion, I'm lenient on the 360 controller. Give me your opinion and share more pros and cons!

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I'll be editing this as we go, in case I missed any

Another one for the X360 controller, just me but the two shoulder buttons (not triggers) on the 360 are piss poor :/

Also, the DualShock 3 comes in white as well.

the thumbsticks are just too awkward on the DualShock, and to me, that is the most important part of the controller. i dont mind the bumpers on the 360 controller. so i would have to say that 360 is the best controller

If it aint broke dont fix it. What did sony have to fix with the looks? Worst con ever. And the home button? Really? You use it once or twice during actual play at the moment. Its the button you press when you're done playing. it doesnt need to be in the perfect spot. And its not even that hard to reach. Besides that, pretty good list of pros and cons on both sides.

Of course it is! But it's still fun to debate as long as things don't get out of hand. I enjoy debating the things I love, it makes me appreciate them more having to defend them. Video games is one of them.

It's a bit more practical for some games, especially simpler ones. And if you aren't "thumbstick trained", then the DS3 is a better choice.

I gotta say DS3 controller the design is simple no getting used to, sixaxis is a bonus for certain games and I have no problem with the thumbsticks. The only thing I want different is a non-slip film at the bottom like the 360's and shiny coat. 360 controller to me looks fugly, design is sturdy you can drop it and not worry but d-pad is in the wrong location but when you have no were else to put it then you gotta live with it.

The 360 controller is more sturdier.

Fire both controllers out of two cannons facing each other, the 360 controller would be the victor.

When thumbsticks first came out, very few knew how to really use them. Not even developers had quite mastered them. Anybody, however, can use a d-pad. The shapes are also a bit friendlier and easier to read. This applies more to simpler games, as I said. Let's say, what I meant more was that it was better and more inviting for newer gamers.

I always liked the DS3 more, maybe because its much easier to pick up and play on-the-go or because the D-pad is placed perfectly and the R1, L1 are nicer and easy to use, or maybe because i have normal not so over-sized hands :P

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I'll be editing this as we go, in case I missed any

darthzew

Wow, what a dumb thread. The controllers are nearly identical, closer than any other generation IMHO. Somehow, people still feel the need to argue their opinions as if they are fact.

The worst thing this thread does is it doesn't even take into consideration the objective differences between the controllers. Instead, it focuses on antecdotal evidence and opinions to form the "pro" and "con". Of course, there is no mention of how the DS3 has a rechargable battery. There is no mention of the differences between RF/BT. All the other differences are subjective, and you can't really place them as a "con" or a "pro" because they are different for every person.

First: WHAT? If you say you have big hands, you should reach them perfectly fine! I have absolutely no problems with this.

Secondly: Not as convenient? I don't get that. Also, at least the Xbox shoulder buttons wont get stuck like my previous DS2 controllers did.

Third: It isn't fun to say? Totally irrelevant. Plus, I just call it the 360 controller :P

I think you have put up a nice and fair list of pros and cons. I like both controllers, I think the 360 controller fits better in my hand but it feels akward to use both analog sticks because they are places asymmetricly.

Yep. Isn't fun to say is totally irrelevant. It does not affect gameplay whatsoever. I do wish it would have a nicer name though. Dualshock just sounds cool. How about... Controller-T (T comes after S, I'm referring to the old Xbox "Controller-S", in case you didn't know)

you can't really define it that easily. for me, it depends on the game. for a shooter, 360 controller, and honestly i like it better for gTA4, but for nearly every other type of game dualshock is king.

To be honest when i used the 360 controller for the 1st time i loved it. Last gen feel (the Gamestop version of the original xbox controller was the best, and Microsoft just copied it). But then i used the DS3. My goodness. Greatest controller ever. Definetly no feel of a last gen controller like u listed. It feels completely new even though it looks the same. And from my experience the DS3 analogue sticks are much more responsive than the 360. The bumpers on the 360 controller are always in the way. The feel for the 360 controller i thought was amazing. But after using a DS3 the 360 controller just feels clunky.

Sony should just make 2 versions, one with a dreamcast placed stick and normal next time or even now.

I like the 360 controller, but for me DS3 is better because I have smaller hands. I guess 360 controllers are better for larger hands because of the thumbstick placement, and the DS3 is better for smaller hands because thumbsticks are closer. Well, that's just my opinion - too bad my 360 can't use a DS3 though. Oh well - I'm happy with my GoW2 :)

I used to own all current gen console, and the best controller has to go to Xbox 360's

Pro: perfectfit on my hand

nice bumpers and triggers

awesome unsleppery analogue sticks

responsive start/select and home button

decent face button

Con: worst dpad

need batteries

What I call a perfect controller

-xbox bumper and triggers

-ps3 face buttons

-xbox analogue stick

-ps3 dpad

-xbox controller design

-ps3 built in batteries
