DS game recommendations

#1 Posted by Lucianu (9453 posts) -

I got a cheap DS, and i want to get into it for real; dedicate my gaming time schedule to its library and experience some of the greats i might have missed. By greats, i mean the absolute cream of the crop that i must experience before i die. I got a few on my mind (i will get Dragon Quest V on anything, including this handheld) but other recommendations would help me out a lot. I wanna make a good list as my base and go from there.

I wont repeat things from above but I'd definitely add Suikoden Tierkreis to the list. I'm about 30 Hours into it at the moment and loving it. Dragon Quest IX too.

The World Ends With You and 999. The latter is a visual novel, with very little gameplay, which I understand puts people off of it, still a great game though.

games aren't that serious where you have to play some before you die lol

Nice, this will give me a good idea on what to start with.

Excellent thread, and it blows my mind how much love this visual novel garnered over time. My first impression from the videos i've seen left me unimpressed - A great deal of exposition through dialogue that's setting up a chain of puzzles that once completed will allow you to progress to another exposition through dialogue and so on.

But there is a shit ton i dunno about this one, and there must something there that makes people love the game so much.

  1. Chrono Trigger.
  2. The Dragon Quest games (get them all)
  3. Pokemon (get them all of one version of each gen preferred)
  4. Okami-den
  5. Phoenix Wright Trilogy + Apollo + Edgeworth
  6. Professor Layton Games
  7. The World Ends with You
  8. Phantom Trick
  9. 999
  10. Really can't think of a 10th game. I could say Radiant Historia, but I never played it despite many saying it's amazing. The Megaman games are good too (yes even Star Force) and I really can't Recommend Mario Kart DS or Animal Crossing Wild World since New Leaf and MK7 are out and are much better games. Kingdom Hearts 358/2 days is pretty good.

anyway those are my recommendations.

@YearoftheSnake5 no...Age of Empires DS SUCKS if you want REAL turn base strategy for DS get Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon or Advance Wars Days of Ruin or Duel Strike.

Ghost trick gets my recommendation.

I will further stress 9 hours 9 persons 9 doors. Being one of the few visual novels (and well translated at that) in the west, it was such a unique and incredible gaming experience for me. Fantastic story, one my personal favorites from any entertainment medium. The Phoenix Wright trilogy is another good pick, with fun puzzles.

Seeing as I have a 3DS without ever getting a DS, this thread is relevant to me.

You can get the best GTA game on the DS

#22 Posted by commonfate (12473 posts) -

Radiant Historia and 9 Hours 9 Persons 9 Doors are my two votes. There are definitely some more great games but as your OP stressed those two are what I consider to be most worthy of my time.

It's not because 3DS is backwards compatible.

The fact that it took till the 16th post ( char) for someone to name one of the BEST on the ds (kirby CC) is shameful. You have failed me system wars.

#25 Posted by Heirren (17388 posts) -

@Lucianu:

People are missing the greats.

Nanostray -pretty good top down shooter. You'll most likely enjoy it if you dig 16 bit shooters.

Contra 4- one of the best games on the console with maybe the best use of two screens. Great visuals.

-there's also some really great Metal Slug on the DS--like contra, the visuals really shine.

#26 Posted by PhazonBlazer (11922 posts) -

The World Ends With You.

Best game on the DS.

This list pretty much sums it up. I'd probably add Might & Magic Clash of Heroes, Another Code: Two Memories and the rather underrated Infinite Space on top.

Kirby Squeak Squad
Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
Pokemon White or Black and either Heart Gold or Soul Silver
The World Ends With You
Phantom Detective: Ghost Trick
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow
Legend of Zelda Phantom Hourglass
GTA: Chinatown Wars
Mario Kart DS (you need other with it to really get the most out of it obviously)
Metroid Prime Hunters (Same as above, I recommended this for it's great multiplayer, the single player is meh)
Advance Wars Days of Ruin
Professor Layton and the Curious Village
Chrono Trigger
Rhythm Heaven
