Dragon Quest VIII announced for 3DS

Dragon Quest VIII is coming to 3DS, Square Enix has announced. This version of the game is launching in Japan on August 27. Pricing is set at 5,980 yen.

Dragon Quest VIII will feature a brand new scenario, Garuda and Morrie as new characters, and StreetPass functionality. The game’s events will now have voices, and an orchestral soundtrack – performed by the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra – is planned.

I wish they announced this for the PS4 instead so they can include a demo for FFXII HD. Being on the 3DS just doesn't even give me hope that it'll be localized.

One of my favorite PS2 games, which is saying something. I won't hold my breath for a western release though.

That game deserves better than being on mobile (always shit) and being on 3DS. (and stuck in Japan) I really tried to play the mobile version but, ugh. If it isn't something simple and stupid like Plants versus Zombies, it just won't ever work on mobile.

If the fucking 3DS wasn't region-lock, I import that sucker in no time. This needs to hit the NA.

This game was beautiful on the PS2, to see it downgraded on mobile and handheld platforums is just... Ew. This game deserves a HD remaster.

Why they didn't release the DQVII remake worldwide is beyond my understanding, and they'll probably do the same thing with Dragon Quest VIII.

Those are two excellent titles that'll only reinforce the strength of the 3DS library of games. Those two would be the first fucking games i'd buy in a heartbeat with a 3DS.

I really hope they localize this thing. DQVIII was fun as hell.

I'm not really sure about specs between PS2 and 3DS. The 3DS might very well have better hardware inside it, But it is always let down by it's terrible screen resolution of 400 x 240, that make's every game look like a jagged mess. I don't think I've seen a single 3DS game that outshines most well known PS2 games graphically. Maybe in certain areas. Games like KH Dream Drop Distance hardly look better than KH1 & 2 on the PS2. Xenoblade chronicles 3ds looks so ugly compared to that of something like Shadow of the Colossus.

If I'm not mistaken, Square turned down Nintendo's offer to localize the DQVII remake.

It'll be a visual downgrade, not a massive one though.

The only reason for a downgrade is the terrible resolution of 400x240 pixals which is not even a third of the original 640x480. We've seen much more graphically more demanding games on the 3DS before.

Okay, not REALLY like THAT, but c'mon, that, like Namco's Tales team (who refused to localize the Wii version of Graces, but was more than happy to do it for PS3), it's pretty much their mentality is at this point, considering the ONLY DQ that's localized is Heroes on PS4.

Dragon Quest (main and spinoff) titles don't sell in the West so Square-Enix has changed their strategy. Only reason IX did well was because Nintendo pushed it hard in marketing and the game has the whole multiplayer thing going for it, but you can't expect Nintendo to market someone else's games all the time. There is no "hatred" towards Nintendo fans, it's simply the cons outweighing the pros of translating these giant RPGs for a market that doesn't really care about them. You can't fault Square-Enix for that.

I'd bet money it will, DQVIII sold extremely well is the west.

The PS4 is a special case and for all we know Sony could be helping bring it over like Nintendo did for Dragon Quest VI, IX, and Bravely Default. It's also a hack and slash similar to Dynasty Warriors with very light RPG elements, so not a fully-fledged 70+ hour game like VII and VIII.

It won't. SE didn't for the previous DQ's on DS and 3DS since VII.

ERR yes they did the DS DQ XI,VI and V as well as Joker 1/2 and Rocket slime where released in the west.

The only modern era games that haven't been released is WII-U X which was basically a MMO, slime 3 and Shonen Yangus.

Like what the great Master Malstrom has said time to time, heavily Japanese focused anime artstyles just don't sell anymore, unless there's a demand for it, which is now much smaller than ever before. It's not Nintendo's fault that they can't help sell the franchise overseas, they did what they could to sell DQ IX, but it didn't meet SE expectations despite selling well. Maybe you should blame more of SE for having too high of expectations of this old series....

It's obvious that SE has more faith in Final Fantasy than Dragon Quest in the western world.
