Does Cloud in Smash Bros even make sense?

Cloud was always associated as Playstation Character, I mean you could say the same for Solid Snake, but he atleast had games for the Gamecube. Cloud however doesn't even have History with Nintendo Consoles, I feel like Sora would've been the better Square Enix rep.

Cloud only had cameos in recent Final Fantasy offerings for Nintendo systems, more specifically the 3DS.

This is technically Cloud's first actual appearance on a Nintendo console. Even though his first Nintendo Cameo was I believe Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories.

Whether Cloud was from the Ballot or not, I'm sure Cloud was one of the top characters that was voted for a lot. Sure it makes no sense since Cloud has no association with Nintendo but the gamers do and not everyone who plays smash only play Nintendo games.

Cloud has been in multiple games on Nintendo platforms. He's been in Kingdom Hearts games such as Chain of Memories on the GBA and Final Fantasy games such as Theatrhythm on 3DS. Also, let's be realistic, if any FF character was going to join it's him. Yes, other FF characters might have started on Nintendo platforms, and deserve the spot more because of that, but few have the global recognition that Cloud has and like it or not he is the poster boy for the franchise. From a marketing perspective, he makes the most sense for both Nintendo and Square-Enix.

No, not at all. If they put a Square character like Crono, I'd get it, but putting in Cloud pretty much means any character is fair game if you can find a loophole. Put in Goku, Luke Skywalker, and Batman next, because they've technically shown up on Nintendo platforms too.

Along with what others have said, There will probably be a Cloud cameo or costume whatever in that FF Explorers game.

It's an odd choice for Smash Bros, but as a FFVII fan I'm not complaining.

This is why I love Nintendo. No other company can drop bombs like this. Cloud in Smash set the Internet on fire. I may be a Sega fan boy but I love Nintendo. What a day!

Super Smash Bros. is a franchise that is not supposed to be taken seriously or make sense. In fact having "weak" characters like Peach fighting against "strong" characters like Ganondolf and win would not make sense in their respective games.

It makes me smile how Playstation Allstars Battle Royale didn't have Cloud but Smash will. What a world we live in!

Does it matter? At this point it is clear that Smash Bros. is basically a museum to gaming at large, rather than just being a tribute to Nintendo. I am completely okay with that.

The DLC is all about what characters will sell the best. Cloud appeals to the weabs and FF fangirls so it's no real surprise. Plus I bet Nintendo got a lucrative deal from Squeenix to advertise their upcoming game for them.

It doesn't matter if he's going to be generic anime swordsman #1523; he's popular. And that takes precedence over bringing back unique veterans like Snake, Wolf, Ice Climbers, Ivysaur, and Squirtle.

Think about it, Final Fantasy VII is among the most popular FF game to date, and Cloud is the most recognizable character of the entire franchise. It makes sense to put Cloud in it as he is more popular, especially in Japan.

He's gotta be up there with Goku, Bayonetta and Rayman for "worst Smash character idea ever", but I also wouldn't be surprised with Sakurai's recent DLC investments, Square Enix wants to reap benefits given THEIR recent track record.

@texasgoldrush: Sqaure Enix deemed Smash Bros worthy, they wouldnt even let Playstaion All-stars have him, but Smash Bros is the greatest fighting game of all time, hes a perfect fit.

It doesn't matter how highly regarded FFVI is, FFVII was their highest selling game of the franchise and Cloud is the most recognizable character compared to Cecil. While I do love FFVI more and think Kefka was the best overall FF Villain of all time, Sephiroth will still get more spotlight due to FFVII's marketing value.

Really, I can point to the success of FFVII, which was a badly flawed game, as helping with the decline of the series. Why? Because when a game gets popular or too well praised, it leads to one overlooking the flaws, flaws that get carried to game after game, and many times made worse. FFVII's storytelling is very flawed, and the same flaws keep popping out again and again all series long afterwards. This is what happened to Bethesda and their games with Fallout 4, and its reception is probably the worst that Bethesda had.

You can complain how one game is ruining the company, but like I said, it's always about money with companies. You need money to pay for devs hard work, you need money for R&D, you need money to keep making games. It's always about money for SE, so no matter how you feel about FFVII, SE will use what sells the most.
