Japanese devs shit the bed all the time when it comes to PC ports.

And unfortunately not only PC ports, as of late.

While I believe that piracy on PC is more than something like consoles....I listened to a video on youtube today talking about this very thing and one guy said something that I and the other 4 or 5 guys there agreed with:

There seems to be more ppl paying for PC games now-a-days than before.

I personally attribute this to Steam. Steam has made it easier to just buy the game than to go through torrents and whatnot....especially when the game will more than likely be 40% off 2 months after release.

Anybody who puts a word "every" in a sentence will always be wrong. Not every Japanese developer will be incompetent in PC game development. I think that's already a given. The bigger picture though is that Japanese devs are incompetent in PC gaming. They have yet to treat PC gaming seriously. So I don't think you should "expect" a spectacular PC version or a PC game from them. Doing so is like expecting Blizzard to make an awesome Mario-like platformer or for Nintendo to make a SC-like polished RTS game.

Well, it was a game that started on Ps3/360 which had vastly different hardware and even the Ps4/Xb1 are not quite like PC's, so effort has to be made to port games to PC even then. Even DX12 won't make effortless conversions possible to PC.

I think these days PC should be lead platform unless it's an indie or an exclusive. Or unless a game simply has no or next to no audience on PC.

Well the list of multiplats better on PC is exponentially larger, Isn't it like over 90%?

Maybe they don't have computer that are more powerful than PS3 in Japan. Maybe the concept doesn't exist. Maybe if we go and tell them "dude, PC surpassed PS3's spec a year after that shit came out" their brain might cease to function because to them that sounds so fucking batshit insane that no amount of PS4 boob jiggle can calm their constantly-blowing mind.

It's due to an as-yet-unannounced advanced boob physics engine.

In that case they shouldn't even make a PC version if they're going to do a shitty job.

Nope not everywhere. Most western studios have a history with PC game development. The same can't be said with Japanese devs. It is why they suck at making multiplatform games I mean they don't make PC versions as much as Western devs do. A lot of them are inexperienced and have no knowledge on what PC gaming is about. For one, they don't know the concept of being able to tweak graphical settings in a PC game which is the most basic thing in PC gaming.

You do realize bob that there are only few Western studios that make games on consoles only? Name me of these Western companies that do consoles only. You'll find that they are usually tied to the console makers. Japan is the only country where PC gaming is nonexistent. It speaks volumes in itself.

What the heck are you talking about? PC Gaming in Japan isn't non existent. When you say PC Games in Japan, you are basically saying R18 Games or most likely one... The reason they don't release games on the PC platform is because they don't want their games to be labeled as an R18.

More or less this. There's a sizeable doujin/indie gaming scene in Japan that releases countless doujin/indie games every year for PC. And while R18 games do make up a big chunk of them, that only represents a fraction of the doujin/indie games released there. Just because something isn't mainstream, that doesn't make it "nonexistent". But the association of Japanese PC gaming with R18 games does hurt the mainstream image of PC gaming in Japan (kind of like how visual novels are viewed as "hentai" in the West).

Anyway, Japanese developers are slowly getting better at PC development. The PC versions of Konami and Capcom games, for example, are usually better optimized for PC than their console counterparts (e.g. Ground Zeroes, REmaster, etc.). Square Enix and Silicon Studios have also produced some very impressive tech demos on PC (e.g. Agni's Philosophy, Mizuchi Engine). Tecmo, on the other hand, is a noob at PC development, just like From Software was a few years ago.

You've just answered your own questions. Claiming that "PC gaming is unpopular and nonexistent here" is a huge generalization. That's what generalizing means.

...Don't be that guy. PC gaming exists in Japan. It's certainly not mainstream, but being unpopular does not suddenly make something "nonexistent".

It is nonexistent. I'm studying in one of the most popular gaming schools in Japan. There are barely any PC gamers in the school. The PC games section in stores like BIC Camera consists of old PC games and barely anybody visits the section. DD outside of smartphones aren't exactly popular. It is why cards for games sell in convenience stores rather than just buying directly from digital stores. There will always be a minority. Anybody who denies the existence of minorities is a fool. Of course there are PC gamers in Japan what do you expect a total 0? But PC gaming is nonexistent there. It is why Blizzard doesn't bother to make Japanese versions of their games and a lot of other PC devs especially indie games. The market for PC games (i'm talking about western games here not hentai PC games) just isn't there.

And oh I forgot to add, Valkyria Chronicles and FF VII and VIII PC versions aren't available on Steam in Japan. SEGA also doesn't let their Total War games sell on Steam Japan. Just goes to show the mindset of Japanese devs on their own homeland when it comes to PC gaming.

Try and live here in Japan so you will understand. It's no good just sitting in front of your computer in a different country talking about another country. I currently live in Tokyo and have been to USA 3 times and I can see the great differences in gaming culture.

It's a dangerous thing to lead ppl to believe that the constant barrage of crappy ports on PC are nothing to worry about. Half the time ppl say $500 is enough for a decent PC. Then when a new PC gamer builds his or her new computer for $500 and they can't really run the latest multiplat, they wonder why.

Then they hear "oh btw....ports are crappy on the PC".

It's dangerous b/c it's not something that PC gamers should act like it's nothing. If PC gamers start to get content and just use the best hardware to overcome crappy ports then we will never get good ones.

This $405 PC smashes through any next-gen console. Not even garbage like AC:Unity is unoptimized enough to hold this thing down.

In 2 years ? Seriously what is wrong with you ? Freaking 6 year old HD 5770s can still run unoptimized games like Dying Light and Watch Dogs. How about talking facts sometime ? This build already runs games better than the PS4 and will continue to considering the PS4 and XBone hardware aren't getting better anytime soon.

And for the "bad port" part: So one freaking japanese game and 2 freaking Ubisoft games automatically make ALL games unoptimized ?

Even Kojima Productions made a fantastic port of MGS V:GZ and it's their first PC game.
