Do you feel like the Xbox name lost its 'cool' factor with the 360?

No doubt MS tried to change the image of the Xbox to a bit more mass-market with the 360... but do you feel the Xbox name has lost it's 'cool' factor that it tried for with the original Xbox? Seems as though (at least at the time of the launch) that the original Xbox went for a cooler, more edgy image as opposed to the rivals at the time... however, the 360 comes across as very generic in my opinion in comparison to the PS3 and Wii... what do yall think? Not that I care about the image of the console- but in regards to sales, image is crucial.

If you watched all the media and hype behind the launch of the original xbox, then you saw how Microsoft really pushed for an older, more male dominated target market- and did so by going for an edgy image- it was talked about during E3 2001.

I like the name XBox 360. Playstation 3 is much more generic than Nintendo Wii and XBox 360. Hmmm, I wonder what they'll call the next Playstation....-GeordiLaForge-

The 360 part is supposed to mean the system revolves around you. Hence you can personalize dashbards, custom face plates, more.

but i think the real reason is because they didn't want to call it the "xbox 2" when they're going against the "PS 3"just looking at that on paper makes one system seem inferior to the other :P

xbox is associated more with nerds and younger gamers, ps3 is more with cool and black ppljim_bojones

The 360 part comes from "putting the user at the center of the experience". If you can take 3 seconds to type a post you can also take those 3 seconds to google it instead of saying "dur wut does it meen?"

360 aint cool what with the overheatingh issues and all...but seriously none of the consoles sound cool....video games are one of those things that might be cool if we hear that a famous actor likes to play them, but any other avrage joe would be ridiculed for it

Xbox was cool? last i checked it was just the name of the system, Meaning Direct Xbox a system that used direct X...I never saw any thing cool about it and i doubt any one truely did in the end...

As for cool, I think when the Wii became a success and they decided to bring in the avatars, that's when they really dropped the ball, if ever they tried to go with "cool".

I thought that ''Xbox 360'' was quite clever actually, as in a complete revolution and surrounding the player in the experiance. Same with the Wii as in ''Us, enjoying it together'' and so on, also the way its spelt with two i's as in two little people. Though I still giggle at the name every so often. :PImOldGreg

I don't know anything about this "cool factor" of which you speak, but I do think that the 360 has lost some of what made the original Xbox so unique in the market. The Xbox had games like Knights of the Old Republic, Chronicles of Riddick, and other exclusives that really made it feel different that the PS2 or Gamecube. The 360 today has lost most of its unique positioning in the marketplace; Knights of the Old Republic was replaced by the multiplat Dragon Age: Origins and Chronicles of Riddick was replaced by the mutliplat...well, Chronicles of Riddick.jalexbrown

The XBox did help change the console market for the better though. It really brought games like Riddick, KOTOR, and Halo to the attention of the masses. Before the XBox, most console gamers had only experienced first person shooters on the N64, and the controls were just awful. If it wasn't for the XBox, alot of great multiplats would be strictly PC games, and alot of other games would've never been made. The PS3 would have been the console introducing console gamers to the awesomeness of first person shooters...-GeordiLaForge-

I think they wanted a 3 in the title because it's competing with the PS3, they didn't want the Xbox 2 to go up against the PS 3. It's just a perception thing I think. That's why i'm fairly sure the next one won't be called 720 or whatever.
