I keep reading insults such as Lemmings, Cows, or Sheep (I can’t be bothered to know who’s what). You don’t see these names being used in news comment sections and it generally seems very immature and thus kid talk.

So do these forums have a much younger demographic or are they just not as moderated and it’s the Wild West here?

You make it sound like a bad thing. I know it's rare, but there's no thought-police here. Your thoughts are not safe here. Scary, hm?

Also. As far as the names go... Read the Survival Guide stickied at the top of the System Wars forum. It holds the answers you seek.

For kids? Maybe, but there is a system for determining whether any particular post was written by someone under 18.

If they end their post with TLHBO, you know that they are a child.

If they end their post with TCHBO, then they are an adult, and a respected member of the community.

It's a pretty sure fire way to tell who to take seriously around here.

The average age is 30's round here. And many are highly educated and have well paying careers.

"cows", "lemmings", "hermits" is just nerd talk and isn't designed to be offensive.

I actually agree with boycie. I don't personally like saying Cows/Sheep/lems/hermits on SW despite I do in fact say it here rarely though. I don't often follow SW styles here, so saying Sony/MS/Nintendo/PC fanboys suits me :)

@Sevenizz: the names are as old as the forum... Its the system wars language. Cows are Sony fans, lemmings are Xbox fans and sheep are Nintendo and pc fans are hermits. It's just the lingo.

My guess is the average age at system wars is 53.

@TheEroica: I highly doubt that ‘average age’ as most of the grammar used by said individuals is rather poor.

Most members of SW are old men who would be dead by now if it was the middle ages.

Its more the context that the user uses it. Most people just shout a specific animal name upon here when their arguments backfire. Nathandrakeswag and Docsanchez for instance are good examples.

My knee-jerk reaction is to think most people here are rather young but I always remind myself that SW has been like this for many many years. I appreciate that it has largely stayed the same and I’m sure others have as well and I started coming since high school. I haven’t found anything else close to SW except for maybe general comments on a recent news article but then if that gets out of hand you see websites trying to squash it.

I got used to it. My issue is with lemmings as a handle.

Cows and sheep are milked and slaughtered because they have a tendency to herd. They're also sacred animals in some circles, so the metaphor erm.. kind of holds there too.

Lemmings, on the other hand: 1) don't commit suicide, 2) aren't farmed, 3) are really hard to find gifs of for those massive quote chain courtship rituals some posters seem to love. Why didn't we go with llamas or something instead?

The terms you refer to are not considered insults in System Wars and are only allowed in that forum. In other forums, you will be moderated for using them.

System Wars is only the "Wild West" only that posters are allowed to bash games and systems, but they are never allowed to insult each other.

As for the "highly educated" claim, I somewhat doubt it as many are either educated with a undergraduate degree or still working on a degree. To me, "highly educated" implies that many posters have advanced or professional degrees which some actually do.

Sevenizz only comes to GS posing in the article news, he hardly comes to the forums, but this is the first time I seen him being more active here in SW. Not everyone who comes to GS ever steps foot into the forums, most of the users only come for the article news and comment on it. I know because I do both and he post lots in the articles.

Sometimes, I wish Eddie Makuch would post more PS4/Xbox news like he did back in the good old days.

In truth there are certainly a few of us who aren't that far away from it.

I have have always had one rule for System Wars and that's "don't take it seriously". To be honest though the quality of trolling has dropped massively over the last few years and I can see where the OP is getting his point of view from.

Some of us old school crew members have been around for a decade or more, so no, if anything, the forum is full of crotchety old men.

That said there is a healthy supply of ultra shitposters who are almost certainly younger, as they only came in after gamespot stopped giving a damn about the forum community.

@FinalFighters: Like I said, I basically come to GS all the time since this is the only gaming site I call home, I go to articles & forums alot here, I know the users who post on both news articles & forums. I'm more surprise to see most regulars who post only the articles are now starting to show up on the forums more so.

The older you get the more you realise their is no such thing as mature... It only exist as a type of porn, in real life the majority of people are just old looking teenagers.

Young people usually are the ones trying to be "mature", what they don't realise is that it pretty much exposes them to the actual mature people on these forums who read their comments and think... "Why so serious?"

I assume you're in your early 20's?... Give it a decade and you will notice just how fake "maturity" really is. I have seen 50 year old couples argue like teenagers, aside from different personalities and or if the spark in you is beaten down due to having depression most people don't "mature" they just get older.

Also its the world wide web... Grammar and spelling doesn't define ones age.

I occasionally post here on a quiet evening when my kids are asleep and my wife takes a nap, I pop on some headphones and listen to some led zeppelin and throw a few glasses of Scotch down my throat before I call it a night.

System Wars has always been like this. And sad to say but a lot of those immature people are actually older people and not kids, teenagers and young adults. Seriously there were some members here who were very childish and silly and I thought that they were in their teens and early 20's but it turns out that they were in their 40's and 50's.
