Did the 360 fall? What was the biggest mistake microsoft made?

It started this gen in 1st place (lems count it when other systems arent out yet), to 2nd, to last.

What was its biggest mistake?

#3 Posted by Cheleman (7616 posts) -

going casual.

#4 Posted by Eddie-Vedder (7776 posts) -

Idk man, I think around 2008 they went full casual and stopped supporting the system with games and that was their downfall. They became a multiplat/Kinectbox.

They lost SOOOOOOOOOOO much marketshare, while Sony started from scratch with 0 marketshare and just kept gaining marketshare, the 360 started this gen with 100% marketshare and managed to end this generation with the least amount of marketshare.

Gotta feel for M$ in these harsh times :(

i'd say, spending money for timed exclusives instead of new ip's

Plus the xbox brand is the weakest out of the big 3, so that has alot to do with it

It more than doubled it's userbase from the original Xbox. I think Microsoft succeeded. Their choice to cheap out on parts and use adhesive instead of solder was a bad one, but they saved themselves quite well.
#7 Posted by locopatho (20131 posts) -
They didn't fail, and their mistake was not brainwashing an army of lunatics who ignore reality and fellate financial reports.

MS went fom an afterthought last gen with over 4 billion in losses to more than tripling their install base and profitability. You won't hear them complaining.
#9 Posted by Heil68 (43273 posts) -
Well when MS decided to drop core in 2009 to chase the Wii's pot of gold they sure seemed to think they early adapters wouldn't mind.

doesn't it have roughly the same number of quality games as the PS3 according to both Gamespot and metacritic?

Most of those games released the first year with no competition or are just rehashes.

They shouldn't have put the RRoD in the 360, even though it boosted their sales a bit ...

cow logic = more than doubling market share and consistent success is failing...

losing more than half markt share and being in last place = good...

id give him through the holidays before his ban... terrible trolls always get squashed... its only a matter of time

The Xbox Live infrastructure is more important to MS than gaming consoles themselves, it's why they got into console gaming in the first place. I'm sure if you asked the mucketymucks at MS, this gen was a big fat win.

doesn't the same apply to the PS3? how many MBLs, Buzz games and PS2 re-releases does it have?

Well the PS3 has rehashes too but at least has much more variety in first party IPs. Besides the "no games" phrase refers o the 360 now lacking first party support which was the same way lems used the phrase to make fun of the PS3 at the start of this gen even though it had games.
#27 Posted by PAL360 (26653 posts) -

It failed on reability and first party studios.

That said, unlike the general expectation, a few years ago, it ended up the gen with the best library, some of the best console graphics and more sales that the previous MS console. If that's not success, i don't get what would be.

Points 360 failed on:
  1. Terribly high launch price
  2. Inconsistent games until later in the generation
  3. Lost the parent company a ton of money
  4. Largest account hacking we've seen in a while

Hold on, I may have gotten confused somewhere.

no you got it. 1. the high launch price was actually covered by tricking people into buying the wireless adaptor and HD separate, along with RROD. 2. Still doesnt have the games on a consistent basis 3. Reported major losses in revenue just last week or two weeks ago actually 4. Too many hacking reports for the 360 to really care.

as long as it has games and exclusives, which it does and in a similar ammount to the PS3, why should it matter?

Their biggest mistake was relying on third parties for exclusive games, it seemed like it was going to pay off at the start of the gen but look at how many exclusives the 360 has lost to ps3 and pc. They should have invested their money more wisely like Sony.
#42 Posted by Mozelleple112 (6618 posts) -

I guess it was the lack of games since 2007. 360 had two strong years and an O.K. launch. 2008 onwards has been god awful exclusive wise.

Firstly, 360 just got the highest rated FPS and Driver this year plus, keep these words in mind when talking about investing wisely...

Sony shares nearing junk bond status :o That is all. :P

I was talking to an investor friend of mine and i asked him about sony, because i was thinking of buying some of their cheap stock in hopes they will turn it around at some point... his words, "nobody is going anywhere near sony... dont"... he did clue me in that you stand to make quite a profit by investing in take2 right now... though everyday we get closer to gta5 that profit goes down. Hes up over $1000 from his investment 6 months ago and climbing.

Oh, you mean the company that hasn't seen a profitable quarter in more than four consecutive years?

I don't think anyone should be following Sony's lead when it comes to investment strategy.
