Scott Derrickson to Direct Deus Ex Feature From Iconic Video Game

CBS Films announced today that Scott Derrickson (Sinister, The Exorcism of Emily Rose) will direct the screen adaptation of the iconic Square Enix video game Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Derrickson will also write the screenplay for the film with C. Robert Cargill (Sinister). Roy Lee and Adrian Askarieh are attached to produce the film with John P. Middleton serving as Executive Producer.

Set in the near future, when dramatic advances in science, specifically human augmentation, have triggered a technological renaissance, Deus Ex: Human Revolution follows Adam Jensen, an ex-SWAT security specialist who must embrace mechanical augments in order to unravel a global conspiracy.

"Deus Ex is a phenomenal cyberpunk game with soul and intelligence, said Derrickson, who continued, By combining amazing action and tension with big, philosophical ideas, Deus Ex is smart, ballsy, and will make one hell of a movie. Cargill and I can't wait to bring it to the big screen."

The Deus Ex franchise was originally introduced in June 2000. Its latest entry, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, launched to universal acclaim in 2011, ranking #1 across global sales charts and earning over 100 industry awards. Developed by Eidos-Montréal and published by Square Enix, Deus Ex: Human Revolution will serve as the primary template for the film.

Executive Vice President of Production Maria Faillace and Creative Executive Alex Ginno are overseeing the project for CBS Films.

Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill are represented by WME and managed by Brillstein Entertainment Partners. Their legal is handled by Jackoway, Tyerman, Wertheimer, Austen, Mandelbaum, Morris & Klein.

Like Sinister, don't know about this though...

interesting, the game has lots of fabric to cut from. As long as they find a good director everything will be fine but game movies always end up with the worst of the worst like Uwe Boll.

as a director Scott Derrickson is pretty good. He directed The Day the Earth Stood Still and The Exorcism of Emily Rose which were pretty good films.

The movie has potential to be a really good movie. It's obvious that they are taking it seriously.

Love the game. If the quality is equal to video game movies such as Resident Evil I will be happy. And you are all beggers when it comes to video game movies so don't act jaded we must take what we can get even if its not good.

I see you value critic opinions above your own. So you lack the self-esteam or confidence to the point where you have to resort to posting opinions of other individuals because you cannot make your own?

One of the reasons the game was so amazing. Jensen was such a likeable character. Seeing a known celeb trying to portray him would just be horrendous.

Because I don't need Leonardo DiCaprio or Brad Pitt acting out characters from my favorite games. That takes away the immersion.

Will it star Takeshi Kitano as Tong Si Hung? Anyway, back in July I compiled my dream team to direct and to star in Deus Ex movie. It went like this: Director: Nicolas Winding Refn Starring: Adam Jensen - Tom Hardy David Sarif - Daniel Day Lewis Bill Taggart - Stellan Skarsgard Hugh Darrow - Jeff Bridges Zhao Yun Ru - Bjork Megan Reed - Alison Lohman / Scarlett Johansson Malik - Audrey Tatou Frank Pritchard - Robert Carlyle Eliza Cassan - Zooey Deschanel Tong Si Hung - Takeshi Kitano But anyway, I don't have high hopes, Sinister is the only decently-rated movie by this director who is only known for "genre movies" so far, and there hasn't been any even "average" (by movie standards) video game adaptation so far, so it's understandable I'm cautious about this...

Why wouldn't they adapt Deus Ex 1? It has a better plot IMO and is obviously the best and most beloved game in the franchise. Plus it is old enough that they could really take the art in a lot of directions. With human revoluton I feel like they have to go with a similar ghost in the shell/blade runner aesthetic

We've got the Ghost in the Shell animu, the first film and Stand Alone Complex. That's as good as it gets really. HR had terrible flaws, though I have to say the trailers implied far stronger themes and story then the game delivered.

Things can be adapted... look at how spec ops turned the heart of darkness into a critique of the AAA shooter industry >< If you take something from one medium and transpose whilst adding other layers to make up for what's lost in translation I think you could make a good movie out of it.

This is what I thought untill I saw the director. You are unfortunately right and now this will jsut be another conspiracy film... which is a shame: video game stories aren't the best, and deus ex HR had its flaws (flat ol' Jensen) Regardless It did have a lot to say about transhumanism, societal inequality et cetera, and it seems such a shame to throw it all away to a director who so far has just seemed to make crappy summer blockbusters. I hope that they give me reason do doubt my own conclusion here but yea, it's shaping up to be jsut another crappy video game conversion.

Stop suggesting actors, just do it in 3d :D, keep the va and use Adam, problem solved.
