Poll Definitive "Is Star Citizen a scam?" poll. (49 votes)
Not much to say that hasn't already been said about the subject, so I'll let the cat speak for itself.

I called them a scam for the longest of time, but now that i saw that they aren't only working on Star Citizen, but also SQ42, and most importantly, an impressive engine, its not a scam lol, its just taking way too f*cking long, and its the kind of project you need AI to help you develop. AI tools will be available very soon, so its in 2022-2023 they should have began developing their damn game, not in 2012.
To me there has to be malicious intent for it to be a scam. I don't think there has been. I think they have always intended to release a game. So to me it is not a scam.

wtf. didn't even realize that.
I'm sure there are some backers who feel like they were scammed. I doubt it's a large percentage of backers. I think the developer has been upfront about their process.
I remember when the initial crowd funding campaign hit $1M. I thought "Well looks like they have enough funding, they don't need any help from me" 🤣
I'll buy Squadron 42 when it comes out.
It will change everything.
Console plebs will cry so much create floods.
Be extremely pathetic. Disgusting. Worm like.
Not a scam, but it is just a game. It has been playable in one form or another for years now. I tried it years ago during a demo weekend and it was interesting, but it still needed a lot of work. I generally don't think about this game and never really hear much about it anymore.
Wow. Even @hardwenzen: is sort of half-heartedly coming around to it.
I say it was never a scam, but their heads and ambitions got too big when everyone threw so much money at them. Wish they had started with a smaller scale Wing Commander successor instead of trying to build a whole life though.
Will play S42 whenever it finally happens.
The writing was on the wall but the dead giveaway came when Roberts bought a mansion and employed his entire family.
It's a scam, but not in the bobby kotick releases a yearly rehash for $70 then proceeds to fire all the developers scam, just a regular scam.
Let's face it hermits are the most gullible fanbase here. 10yrs, half a billion dollars, an engine change later and still no release insight.
What do you think will happen next....
The game reaches a billion in funding before it actually releases.
The game gets setback 5yrs because it's changing its game engine again.
The game doesn't release before next gen begins.
The game never releases.
I think all of them are possible and most likely will happen.

I'm not a Star Citizen believer, personally, but, lol, show me on the doll where hermits hurt you. Sheesh, dude.
Star Citizen looks amazing every time I see it. Ive never once doubted this game and look forward to playing more of it soon.

You're the one who made this thread out of the blue, so show me on the doll where Star Citizen touched you lol.
I made a statement and when you look at what I stated they are FACTS...
10yrs, game engine change, half a BILLION dollars and no release date = Hermits are gullible.
Seems you're reading too much into my comment, not the first time and no doubt not the last.
SQ42 looks too good to be true. if it ever release then I will play it.
not care about star citizen at all.
@davillain spammer alert^^
Sadly, the notification was still broken, but I personally saw this spam a long time ago elsewhere than here. Took care of it too😉
As for Star Citizen, it wasn't a scam, but Chris Roberts bit off more than he could chew when all the backer's money started to roll in. It took way too long for this development to reach a decade later, causing everyone to believe this was a fraud. I'm a backer, I only did it for SQ42, Star Citizen however is just a bonus to me.

There are so many spammers lately, lol. Just saw another one popped up in the lounge.
I don't think it's a scam. I mean if they are running a scam then they are doing a laughably poor job of it. They have a ton of people employed, studios in 2 or 3 different places. They are releasing new stuff for testing pretty regularly. Yes they are taking in a lot of money, but they are also spending a ton of money. If this was a scam then the scammers are doing a very poor job of maximising the return on the scam. They would have taken the money and legged it years ago.
It's just very badly managed. Sadly Chris Roberts has a track record of this. StarLancer and Freelancer were also stuck in development hell for ages. I think MS gave him the boot towards the end of Freelancers development and got someone else in to get it out the door (Still a good game, but you can see where the cuts were made). It's not malice on Roberts part...he just thinks big...REALLY BIG...and also wants direct control over everything.
We often complain of Publishers squashing creativity and just releasing unfinished piss to meet an irrelevant deadline: But this is the other extreme. The creatives given carte blanche to just go wild. There is a better happy medium somewhere.
I'm still rooting for the project though. I wont give them a cent until they actually get something out the door but i really really hope it does deliver. It's the only part of the AAA sector that is actually pushing tech in interesting ways.
The fact that the owner bought a Lamborghini and a mansion for the backers money and 11 years later still haven’t released a game should tell you everything you need to know!
I never felt this game's initial enthusiasm was for the game itself, rather it seemed most the game's early hype was around discussions of what high end PCs could do that console peasants couldn't and that is the hype ceiling it ever had as far as I'm aware. Now it's a decade old early access game. Honestly I don't really care. Way too sim heavy from looks of it for me to care. I wanna game that plays like a game.
It's not the worse offender of a Kickstart scam. In hindsight, Kickstart should be scrubbed, rather people who invest should be getting equity.
Star Citizen is what Starfield wishes it was. If only this game was an Xbox exclusive, it would have 15/10 game of history hype behind it.
I've been mindblown by the scale and fidelity of SC for years now.
I think it's too ambitious for what it is. Its a $5 billion game that won't ever see even a fraction of that. Not even R* could pull that off.

Funny, that No Man's Sky is what Starfield wishes it was and that's saying something. (Even Elite: Dangerous)
Save gaming? Funny. Rather it is a symptom of the ailing industry. 600+million for a game in eternal access, and on the other side scraps.
And it's not like SC is an exception. It's the rule. Anything indie above pixel graphics and easy genres takes forever and/or is released abondoned.
Like the latest example i "stumbled over", an RPG in EA for 8 years by now. 8y for goofy physics and tank controls.
When things were less transparent I'd have said scam and one that I fell for, to the tune of like £30 or w/e so hardly a disaster, that said with the more recent updates and demos I wouldn't describe it as a scam more like overly ambitious, I feel like something will release will it be this decade? who knows?
