Its something I've been thinking about. Nintendo brought back some of the Gamecube stuff. Controllers and the like. Small groups still find ways to bring new games to a system years after it was laid to rest. Sega could build a nice little empire reproducing their old hardware and peripherals, now that people appreciate what they have done. I'm thinking that Sega should release some of their old stuff in a limited fashion. Runs of like 10k consoles a year, and reprinting some of their classics from Dreamcast and maybe even a new game. I wouldn't be surprised in the least if indie developers would make games for it if they had help from Sega.

Would it fly? Sega kinda have went over the edge with bringing back their genesis games to newer systems, but not Saturn or Dreamcast games. I think it could fly and could be a profitable little enterprise for Sega. I wouldn't be surprised if Sega released a anniversary edition of the Dreamcast preorders for it sell out in minutes.

Sega doesn´t have the money to start making consoles all over again.

you mean like remaking the genesis into a modern day Nomad handheld and selling it at a discounted rate at places like walgreeni?

Sega can barely make it as a developer let alone a console maker.

@bunchanumbers: It's never really been done before. The closest is the Atari 2600.

@bunchanumbers: No one makes consoles unless they can sell them in the millions, usually.

Companies are more likely to sue and arrest people doing that stuff, sadly.

Eh, maybe for the "cool" factor. The problem is, its just too easy to obtain those classic games.

This is the correct answer. Also, once you go 3rd party, your not coming back to the consoles business. Game Developers will not trust you since they know what Sega is all about and they sure as hell know Sega ain't got no money to pay them. If Sega wants to comeback, then they need to start a loan from one of those mega banks but I don't think that's gonna happen.

Actually, I was wrong - it has been done before. Atari brought back the 2600 in the mid 80s, they even made a few new games like Solaris (which, for a 2-bit game, was pretty good). At that time, the Atari 7800 (8-bit) was already in the market.

I don't think Sega has the money for that kind of risk. It seems like they have to restructure ever other year due to financial issues. They already license their games to 3rd parties for use in off-brand systems. Go to Toys R Us and you'll likely find a little console from a manufacturer you've probably never heard of with Sega games built in. Rather than produce their own hardware, Sega simply allows 3rd parties to deal with it. Far less risk for a crumbling company.

There's plenty of homebrew out there for retro consoles. One of the most impressive projects I have seen is Wolfenstein 3D on the Sega Genesis.

Fans have brought back old consoles. The Analog NT NES and their wood variants on the Neo Geo AES are made up of completely refurbished parts and even offer benefits over their original releases. Very likely going to buy the NT if i'm able to. Neo Geo not so sure given the cost vs the cost of the actual carts.
