Hi all,

I'm a Senior Computer Systems Engineer, Graphic Designer, and Video Producer. And I'm here to tell you that both the Xbox One and PS4 are both major letdowns to videogaming. As somebody at the top of the tech food chain and that's a gamer, I want you to know this:

Avoid the Xbox One. You'd think after the terrible Xbox 360 design, these guys would learn. Nope. Instead, they designed something large and ugly that looks like a 1993 shiny VCR, and wanted to play videogame-industry Nazi and lock it down with DRM and all kinds of idiotic security protocols. Microsoft only reneged those things because gamers were furious and they wanted to compete with Sony's PS4, not because they're generous. It's insulting and nothing says "screw you" like not buying. There's so many things wrong with the Xbox One, from its dumb name (did a child name it?), to its upscaled graphics, to its silly goal of being the all-in-one entertainment box in your living room. Microsoft can't even make a decent OS or videogame console anymore, but now they want to control all forms of media! It's sad, really. A once-respected tech leader, now a silicon circus. If you already own an Xbox 360 or PS3, you don't want an Xbox One or PS4 because all you're getting are ever-so-slightly improved textures, lighting, shadowing, and resolutions -- that you probably won't notice, anyway -- so save your $400 to $500 dollars and stick with your Xbox 360 or PS3 for the next few years...and buy a lot of great games. However, if you don't own an Xbox 360 or PS3, then by all means buy a PS4.

Note: I own both an Xbox and Xbox 360, but I am not a blind fanboy. I always buy the better product. I told you this because I want the next Xbox and PS5 to blow me away and make me say I gotta have it.

Nobody cares about what some no name computer engineer has to say. Give these consoles to talented game developers and they can truly make some of the best looking games imaginable. Clearly you're failing to see differences in frame rates over last gen also. Games run silky smooth on my PS4 now.

I don't think they are letdowns, but they are basically only first quarter 2012 mid-range PCs that can almost keep up with current $400 PC hardware. This is by no mean an indictment of either console, as they both look and play well enough for most people, especially the superior of the two, the PS4. You can't go wrong buying a $400 PS4 for gaming. It is a good choice, but I do agree that the PS3 and 360 or even a $400 PC are currently the better gaming values simply due to their massive game libraries.

terrible 360 design? GTFO... they just released no shit they are just improved textures. look at ps3/360 first line up of games and compare them to a year later or even now

Of course Xbox One and PS4 games will look a tad better as Developers learn more about the software and hardware, but the fact remains neither console is worth it. They're like Xbox 360 v2.0 and PS3 v2.0.

you lost my interest as soon as you said "ugly that looks like a 1993 shiny VCR" right there just shows your know engineer and trying to give us an actual insight instead this is just a troll thread and it's a troll account, do we even have moderators on these boards anymore, i remember before the new website how strict it was, seems very slack

I believe we're close to reaching the threshold for cartoony visuals. The Artists just can't do much better. The next step is VR and live video footage. The physics and AI in games just isn't up to snuff. Every time I play a game, something stupid and not believable happens, making me remember this is just a game. That's not the experience I want to have. For example, an NPC will execute the same predictable behavioral pattern, or one object will clip another. As the generations pass and the polygon count increases, these issues will become more magnified.

I manage computer and software engineers, and I say this topic is a letdown.

Even if you were a computer engineer(highly doubtful), all of your complaints have nothing to do with that.

#23 Posted by madsnakehhh (13977 posts) -

For a tech guy...you write like you were a 12 year old who googled words like OS, VCR and you know, Engineer.

This is an IT guy. What an idiot.

(But according to his linked in, he "possesses perfect English")

A real computer engineer would be the one working at Microsoft, AMD, Sony, Nintendo, Nvidia, Intel, etc making these computers.

An engineer that talks about Xbone's shinyness instead of its weak hardware. Legit.

haha, a "Senior Computer System Engineer" talks like a 12 year old fanboy
