Charlie Munger, Berkshire’s vice chair and Buffett’s longtime business partner, was asked by Claman if he approved of redistributing wealth to decrease economic inequality.

The 90-year-old Munger, renowned for his candor, replied simply, “Not much.”

Buffett, asked the same question, said, “More than Charlie.”

Gates answered, “About the same as Warren.”

That's an interesting little back-and-forth there.

Xbox does not have to make a dime to be an important part of MS's long term enterprise strategy. Pure speculation follows:

Bing, windows phone, Zune, and Xbox are all about interface. Lets say in five years you have to choose an enterprise operating system for the seven hundred computers in your school. All the options, for the most part, will accomplish the same thing. One however has the same or a similar GUI as the first/second most popular video game console in America. If you pick that one, most kids who sits down at the computer will be able to intuit how to use the machine with little guidance. Do you pick the one you will have to teach kids from the ground up, or the one they will be able to mostly figure out on their own?

In ten years you are making the same choice, only for an entry level office building like a call center. Do you pick the one that the average 18-23 year old has been using at home to play video games, and at school, or the one you will have to spend money training them to use?

Five years after that, you are doing the same for a more professional environment that caters to people in their late twenties and early thirties. Same question, same obvious answer.

Microsoft doesn't care about gaming. They care about every person in the developed world having a familiarity with their interface. Entertainment devices and home computers, tablets, and phones groom entire generations, making their enterprise software more and more attractive. Maybe the consumer branch makes little to no money. Maybe they even take a loss. It however entrenches their software deeper and deeper, because businesses do not have to teach people how to use a computer if they stick with MS products.

This makes sense. As others have said, Gates appears to be showing support for the new CEO. Gates stated that he can't see them as standalone, due to being a part of MS' long-term strategy.

"Gates, the founder and former CEO of Microsoft, said he’s been helping new CEO Satya Nadella transition into his new leadership role and that he would support Nadella if the new CEO proposed a spinoff of one of Microsoft’s units.

But Gates said he didn’t foresee either Bing, the company’s search engine division, or Xbox, its gaming division, as potential stand-alone companies because they are part of Microsoft’s long-term strategy."

Maybe in the short-term, but I think that would largely be determined by the success of their (whoever bought it) strategy.

Lemmings are seen on System Wars again on full damage control mode.

And NeoGaf is down.

This is going to be a great day.

I did and its still funny to see over-reactions in both sides.

Gates believes Xbox and Bing are long-term strategies for the companies, but also flat out states he'll back whatever decisions the company takes in the future.

If Nadella wants to cut off the Xbox, there's pretty much not a darn thing Gates could do.

So why exactly are people over exaggerating what this means for the Xbox division? It's not going anywhere for the foreseeable future. That's pretty obvious. 10 years from now? Who knows but right now? It's a none issue. Or do you think otherwise?.

I definitely see the Bone sticking around for year 10, but you gotta admit its legitimately eye-opening how quickly the company sees cutting off units, especially for one such as Xbox One, viable after failing to generate the impact they were hoping it would make.

Its also interesting how the company places Bing and Xbox under the same "doom and gloomz " category and how both units seem to have become such hot topics behind closed doors. Perhaps compared to the success of PS4 and how Microsoft has been throwing the money-hats around... they somewhat find the One lacking?

They might have opted for "chunkier" results in return.

Or they could be over generalizing. It happens to companies too.

@Locutus_Picard: This doesn't mean dumping the XBox you moron. lol!! He's talking about growing the brand in other directions. Nothing would happen to the XBox One. Cows are so stupid. This is actually good news as it would bring more people to the XBox brand.

Really? So selling 80+ million and selling more software than Sony doesn't mean anything? What does that say about Sony? You know, that company that LOST all of it's profits from the PS1 AND PS2 with the PS3. Is the ONLY reason the PS4 is still around because of the huge success of the PS1 and PS2?

They were talking about potentially dissolving the Xbox division before the Xbox1 even launched. In the immediate future they aren't going to be cutting shit, that's obvious. If you want my honest opinion, gaming is just not a high profit industry and not high stability and MS is better off investing elsewhere "but" at this point, there is zero reason to even consider selling it off. It'll do more damage than good to their reputation since Xbox is one of their only modern entertainment products that actually gained traction as a popular brand that can compete in the market (their issue was trying to push Kinect and non gaming entertainment . . . because they are idiots but that's another story entirely) which they consistently failed at with other products. I'm 100% sure the PS4 success is not related to this at all. The doom and gloom is pretty much none existent for right now at least.

Yeah, cause it wouldn't make for a good bait topic. OP fails to mention that Satya isn't even willing to spin off the Xbox Division. Basically... What I get from all this is, Bill Gates is basically willing to support Satya Nadella in just about anything that may come up.

I'm not sure how people could have missed that. That idea has been around for years... then again some people are like investors. They fail to see the big picture and will gladly turn a short term gain for a long term loss.

whoa BOY...i almost thought this was going to be a bad day for Lems after reading the title. but then i read the OP, and link, and saw that title was weighted cow BS and felt a wave of relief.

really though...shouldnt the title of his thread have been changed by now. its misleading completely, its not even a direct quote from B Gates. and he was just showing support for the new CEO, saying that he supports him and any choices he makes. then continues on to say how Xbox is in MS LONG TERM plans.

whoa BOY...i almost thought this was going to be a bad day for Lems after reading the title. but then i read the OP, and link, and saw that title was weighted cow BS and felt a wave of relief.

really though...shouldnt the title of his thread have been changed by now. its misleading completely, its not even a direct quote from B Gates. and he was just showing support for the new CEO, saying that he supports him and any choices he makes. then continues on to say how Xbox is in MS LONG TERM plans.

There's no need to take this place that seriously.

I guess cows don't know what long term strategy is.

the only reason the Xbox brand has lasted this long it's because of M$' deep pockets, so whoever buys this shite will only lose money.

talk about losing money sony also lose their ps1 and ps2 profit thanks to ps3 fiasco ,and now they started again from 0 with ps4

And I reiterate my previous statement that I was ridiculed in the other thread on something similar to this for:

But but Xbox is Bill Gates' Baby. He'd NEVER do something like selling off Xbox... Yeah right Lol
