Bethesda vs Atlus

Except for the fact that both make (some form of) RPGs, they don't really have a whole lot in common. Still, their games emphasize player agency, they specialize in long running and beloved franchises, and both have loyal and passionate fan bases.

Which do you think is better?

While I am voting for Atlus, I imagine Bethesda's wider reach will ensure then this victory.

Bethesda because lol jrpgs

Bethesda. I dedicated hundreds of hours to Fallout and TES. I spent a handful of hours on Persona 4 and that's it.

Well Atlus game don't do anything for me. On the other hand I actively loathe bethesda for releasing broken glitch-fests that they try to pass off as games.

So it come down to games I dislike because I don't like the style of game, or games I dislike because they are broken.

Easily Atlus because i havent played any Bethesda game nor do i have any interest in doing so.

Voting for Bethesda, because finalstar voted Atlus.

Bethesda sucks.

You know I haven't played a single Atlus game, be it developed or published. But even then, I'm very wary in choosing Bethesda due to their hallmark strides in shit game design.

The fact that Atlus hasn't done shit or console for an entire generation makes me deeply loath them, but I still think for the PS2 rpgs I played 2 gen ago they are better than Bethesda tho morrowind, as clunky as it was, was a great experience.

I haven't played much Atlas games while Bethesda games are some of my favourites.

Bethesda fo sho. Nothing replaces the experiences I had with TES and Fallout.

Lol this isn't even close. Atlas on it's best day can't come close to Bethesda.

Bethesda is much more than just a developer, though. It's also a publisher of such games in the past 10 years as Call of Cthulhu Dark Corners of the Earth, RAGE, two recent Wolfenstein games, Dishonored and The Evil Within to name a few.

I know Atlus also publishes but what I just listed trumps it beyond any comparison.

Atlus is a cool publisher, but Bethesda is WAY better and also develops WAY better games in my opinion. My favorite developed Atlus game is Trauma Center, that beast was fun, but my favorite Bethesda game is Fallout 3, i enjoy it a lot more then Trauma Center.

I will go with Bethesda, Despite really liking the Persona games alot Bethesda tends to make games I play for longer, and when they have thier act together can make some pretty good stories. They lack the ability to make characters as Interresting as Atlus often do, which is a shame.

I will however note that I care less and less for Bethesda's RPGs as the consequences of choices gets smaller and more insignifigent. Atlus still holds the core beter together, you make the choices, you reap the consequences. So I might Ironically argue that Atlus makes better RPG's. Where as Bethesda's games are hardly anything I can recognize as an RPG anymore, they are simply big open World adventure sandboxes with stats.

But taken from the best of what both has produces, I will go Bethesda.

I like Bathesda as a publisher TBH. I also enjoy their games too.

Same here. I like their ethics. I only hate the fact they used clunky game engines for Fallout and The Elder Scrolls games, well apart from several Skyrim's hindrances of its own, but I still enjoyed it overall.

Voting for Atlus because of FinalStar who represents King of all RPGS.

First I'll explain, i do love Atlus, great developer and publisher.

That said, they just don't compared to Bethesda. Bethesda have published some amazing games in recent years, including the best shooter of 2014 - The New Order.

Bethesda's own games are admittedly broken as hell, and Skyrim was not as great as i would have liked ; but they still make solid games, with Oblivion the game that first got me into RPGs, then modding, and finally, it even got me into game development ; so i have a lot to thank Bethesda for.

I have not liked a single RPG from Bethesda. Skyrim maybe different, but I don't know.

Voting for Atlus because there's too many xenophobic herms on this board.

Bethesda because I'm not a fan of games (or anything else for that matter) featuring under dressed, sexualised children.

I like Morrowind, or I think I still like Morrowind (haven't played it in awhile), Oblivion sucked, and Fallout 3 was if I was being nice, average?

I genuinely dig Shin Megami Tensei 3 and Persona 3 and 4. And I get more and more picky with what jrpg I will tolerate, and I played those fairly recently. So I'd go with Atlus. That said pure player agency is where Bethesda absolutely shits on Atlus, this isn't even close comparison. Bethesda to their credit give you a literal toy box to go mess around in at your own will and time, Atlus's games are well...jrpgs, it's a bit less in your control and more so Atlus's direction.

Atlus because their games are great and always innovative, unlike Bethesda which is shit as evidenced by the fact that their games have the worst game play feature in history - level scaling.

Rage sucks, Call of Cthulhu is a rad game, Only one of the recent Wolfenstein games was a good game, Dishonored is chill, and The Evil Within is disappointing and good at the same time.

Bethesda the pub is actually pretty unimpressive when their best work is matched up against Atlus's best work.

Wouldn't apply to Nocturne, wouldn't apply to SMT 4, wouldn't apply to Catherine, wouldn't apply to Persona 3, and wouldn't apply to Persona 4. The fanbase might be bioware fans levels of creepy, but the actual games don't fit your description.

Bethesda can be replaced, Atlus can't. Nobody else would even attempt to give us an awesome unique experience like Catherine. Atlus helps keep this industry fresh.

No one is actually making games like Bethesda.

The cRPGs play nothing like Bethesda games, they never did. And Modern WRPGs don't actually play like Bethesda games, barring The Witcher 3 actually delivering on its hype. Obsidian technically made a game like Bethesda..but you know, one published by them.

No one else actually makes the large sandboxes that they create with as much content and systems working to create a more organic and free flowing. Buggy as it may be, the only thing close is Rockstar, and they make shooters. Bethesda's games are RPGs, shallow ones, but RPGs.

Dragon Age games don't offer that, they aren't seamless, the Witcher games haven't offered that or come close to doing that until what they say will do with The Witcher 3.

Other devs flirt with the notion that they have the big ass worlds Bethesda does with all the systems going, but it's usually on a much smaller scale. The games might suck, but they aren't a run of the mill studio making the same game everyone else is. That's being disingenuous.

Bethesda because of fallout and Elder Scrolls series. Atlus is great though.

@GarGx1: The first and last one are fan art - you can't blame the game for stuff the fanbase has made. The screenshot is just teenagers wearing clothes that normal people wear at the beach, it's not sexual at all.

Also, good luck finding any children in Catherine. Every character is an adult in it.

@GarGx1: The first and third are fan art, which is exactly what Champ said. The second one is an optional, bonus hidden suit that takes like 40 hours of gameplay to unlock and can still be easily missed. And it's still a goddam swimsuit- you know, things that people in real life wear quite a bit.

And let's not pretend like western RPGs (and games in general) don't feature any tittilation. At least Persona and Atlus have the decency to generally keep it subtle.
