to sukraj: GTA V doesn't pass the test because next gen was around the corner. halo 4 and red dead were definitely really good looking, but didnt raise a benchmark for their respective times.

From my own perspective. The PC doesn't really follow console gens......

I only list games that I have

Aerofly FS

Crysis 3

Far Cry 3

Crysis 2

Crysis/Warhead

Metro Last Light

Sleeping Dogs

Uncharted 3

Uncharted 2

Killzone 3

#19 Posted by BigBoss255 (3539 posts) -

GTA IV? That game looked like ass.

I'd say

Gears 1 - That was the first game that truly felt next gen.

Killzone 2 - Looked miles better than anything else on consoles at the time.

RDR - First great looking open world game of the gen.

Don't forget, MGS4 had the best technical graphics of its time!

Oh, you must be talking about only consoles.

Because otherwise it would be:

Crysis 3

The Witcher 2

Metro Last Light

Crysis 2

Crysis Warhead

Crysis

Battlefield 3

Metro 2033

Tomb Raider

Far Cry 3

Splinter Cell Blacklist

Bioshock Infinite

AC3

Outlast

Alan Wake

Not necessarily in that exact order, and I'm sure I'm missing some, but that would basically be the list. All PC versions, of course.

For me Uncharted 2 was the milestone that defines seventh gen. Until then all the games looked good but not great, but once I saw Uncharted 2 trailer, I was shocked and hooked and went to buy PS3 immidiatelly.

#29 Posted by senses_fail_06 (6736 posts) -

Every list that does not have Killzone 2 is irrelevant.

#30 Posted by osan0 (12864 posts) -

has to be crysis. it basically set the benchmark for years.

Witcher 2 was also a great visual treat. the first time i saw it my jaw dropped.

for consoles only,

gears 1 was the first big leap. before then a lot of people were questioning whether the difference between the first xbox and the 360 was that big since most games looked like upressed xbox 1 games with a few special effects thrown in (history is also repeating itself now). gears 1 shut them up very quickly. itll be interesting to see what this gens gears 1 will be. of course there are many more impressive games than that on consoles now but that was what really kicked it off.

killzone 2 was the PS3s gears1. it was the first game to give a much better impression of what the PS3 could do and it did some pretty impressive stuff. the constant comparisons with crysis were a bit misguided but a fine looking and impressive game in its own right.

for handhelds,

well the PSP wins this by default. wipeout was very impressive on the PSP. im not sure if there were more impressive games visually speaking.

As much as I dislike the game, I was in awe at times while playing Halo 4.

#34 Posted by seanmcloughlin (38218 posts) -

God of War 3 blew me away when I first played it. Parts of it are still highly impressive

Uncharted 2 also impressed me a lot

This was back before I got into PC gaming
