I'm not a Journey lover but it did have good atmosphere.
Modded Skyrim had great atmosphere too, too bad it kept crashing.
I also love the atmosphere in Wind Waker and Skyward Sword.
Bioshock, Amnesia, Metroid Prime.

The first Bioshock game, it shits all over System Shock 2

@yokofox33: I agree, when your roaming the waste the weather/sky gave you that isolated but beautiful atmosphere that made the series so popular, but the rocks and ground..ya not so much, just standard looking

@FreedomFreeLife: I guess you haven´t played many games at all. This explains why you say Last of Us or PT demo."

I'm glad you see things my way.

As someone who's gamed longer, and had more gaming experience than anyone else on this board, I'm pretty much the only one with valid opinions.

Let me know if I can help you with anything else.

I loved every bit of this game. The atmosphere was excellent, the gameplay was fun, The music was great, I still listen to it now, the story was ok but the way you could make enemies fight each other was hilarious and the stealth and puzzles were excellent, and Oh My God the way the wind element was used in this game was phenomenal.

I wrote Eden games about the sequel and got a response. It's in my email somewhere lol That was years ago.

For it's time, Oblivion was king. I got lost in in for months.

Morrowind's feel was just so so much better than Oblivion IMO. Oblivion felt ... souless.

Well I'll have to update my previous comment, what v with the new Bloodborne foootage.

The Last of Us, PT demo, Bloodborne all fighting for atmosphere crown.

#119 Posted by wiifan001 (18414 posts) -

System Shock 2.

For what it's worth, Paper Mario on the Nintendo 64 truly nailed the "paper" atmosphere it was going for

Oblivion was my first elder scrolls game and it looked beautiful at the time. I tried playing Morrowind just recently and the visuals made me ill.

Yep, the whole Stalker series for me, too

#126 Posted by Phazevariance (10969 posts) -

Metroid Prime series, or Dead Space 1.

#127 Posted by anderswhk (67 posts) -

Of all time for me, Ico.

In recent years, games like Fallout 3, STALKER and Metro are king. Theres just something about the post apocalyptic setting that really gets me going.

Alan Wake , by far . Then Amnesia : The Dark Decent .

World feels alive in Alan Wake , thanks to great art direction , sound quality , great visuals and chilling soundtrack . Those blur effects when wind blows , makes you feel like every object is breathing and have come to life .

EDIT :

Looks like STALKER took the crown in this thread . Can't say I disagree, all of STALKER games have really good atmosphere .

Red Dead Redemption

It's one of the few games I would consider as an art.

Also TC, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is a highly overrated game and less immersing than Fallout 3.

STALKER is not overrated . It is underrated actually . If it was some first party game from big 3 , people would've hyped it to death and MC would've been over 9.5 . Fallout games are great as well but STALKER isn't overrated .

@Revan_911 :

First Witcher was indeed , a very unique game . Loved it .

#130 Posted by uninspiredcup (8639 posts) -

It appears everyone is saying stalker, due to the answer being stalker.

TLOU,God Of war 3,RDR,Uncharted 2,SOC/ICO

#132 Posted by ninjaxams (7138 posts) -

not sure about ever but from this gen i'd say both resistance 3 and the last of us.

#133 Posted by pelvist (4811 posts) -

Agree with both Stalker and System Shock 2. Both are very immersive games.

#134 Posted by NoirLamia777 (2158 posts) -

The Soul series, Alan Wake, and The Last of Us.

#135 Posted by Maddie_Larkin (6521 posts) -

I would say:

STALKER SoC

Silent Hill 2

Cyrostasis

Metro 2033 (not last light sadly)

The Witcher 1 (not two since it had no sense of scale, just warzone after warzone)

REsident Evil

System Shock 2

Vampire the masquerade: Bloodlines

Metroid Prime trilogy

Fatal Frame 2

Half Life (not 2)

The Legend of Zelda

Fallout series (in general)

Arx Fatalis.

And finally Persona 3+4

If I had to pick just one, I'd go with Metroid Prime. Shout out to Zelda: The Windwaker, Resident Evil (mainly 1-4), Super Mario Galaxy (both games), Halo, Last of Us, and Half-Life 2. Oh...and Cave Story.

#145 Posted by longtonguecat (2498 posts) -

STALKER
Zelda: Wind Waker
Metroid Prime
Super Metroid
BioShock

These games are all amazing in this department. The crown probably goes to STALKER, though.

Prince of Persia The Warrior Within.
Castlevania Lords of Shadows.
Dishonored.
