Do Batman games count?

#3 Edited by Joedgabe (5111 posts) -

To me it was Castlevania LOS the first one. While DarkSiders 1 was excellent in my opinion the hack n slash elements were actually poor, it felt more like a pure Action adventure game with minimal hack n slash.

Devil May Cry 4 was the best hack n slash I've played out of those (I played the PS3 version of Bayonetta, so my opinion of that game doesn't count yet)

The best action adventure on that list was easily Darksiders. That game is so underrated and outdoes God of War in so many areas it hurts.

As an overall game (i.e. not based on combat alone) I would put:

1. GoW 3

2. GoW: Ascension

3. MGR: Revengeance

4. Bayonetta

5. DmC

6. DMC4

7. Ninja Gaiden Sigma

8. Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2

9. Darksiders II

10. Darksiders

11. Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge

12. Castlevania: LoS

And yes, I've played and beat all of these

#6 Edited by Some-Mist (5630 posts) -

1. Bayonetta

2. Devil May Cry 4

3. Ninja Gaiden 2

4. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

5. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow

6. God of War 3

7. darksiders = enslaved

obviously you can tell that I love steep learning curves/deep combat and despise handholding.

The End

Have to say it's a tie between Bayonetta and DMC (reboot)

Ninja Gaiden 2, easily

Bayonetta easily, hope it gets a Wii U port before Bayo 2.

In terms of just the actual action and combat?

  1. Ninja Gaiden II
  2. Bayonetta
  3. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

Assessed overall as games?

  1. God of War III
  2. Ninja Gaiden II
  3. Metal Gear Rising Revengeance

I also really did like Castlevania: Lords of Shadow.

Lollipop Chainsaw the best, while DMC4 was the worst I played. That game was just tedious.

I personally loved the two darksiders games.

Bayonetta. A very solid combat system. And the varying levels of difficulty add a lot of replay value, because instead of having everything in the game the same with changes to damage dealt/receives, they change up the enemy line-up to make the fighting areas more difficult. And the fighting scoring system also leaves a lot of replay value, constantly trying to get a better and better score.

My second favorite would be Dante's Inferno. I felt a lot of people were disappointed expecting more from Visceral after the awesomeness that was Dead Space. It didn't match in quality but it was still a lot of fun, I don't see what people had against this game. It was a better God of War clone that Jaffe'less God of War 3 was to its predecessor.

God of War 3 was a huge disappointment for me, guess I flew to close to the sun there with God of War 2. Sure, it looked better, but the game had the worst boss battles, and there filler combat also left a lot to be desired. If anything it was just impressive in that it showed off the PS3's graphic capabilities but as a game itself it was shit.

Thought God Of War 3 had most enjoyable package by far. Damn I feel like replaying it a fourth time now :)! Such a fantastic spectacle and some of the moves feel so great in the hand.

Ninja Gaiden 2. GoW3 was excellent, MGR, DMC.

The better question is who is the strongest out of them all. I tip my hat to bayonetta especially with her climax bracelet she basically becomes a god, even stronger than Dante at his max.

Bayonetta was excellent.

LoS was an average game. not bad, but meh. yet to play LoS2.

I started Darksiders a while ago. Only made it past the first dungeon and then never went back, mostly thanks to college stress. Still haven't really felt like returning but maybe I will at some point.

Out of what I have played Bayonetta easily wins.

If you're playing a mage or a ranger, then it's not so much a "hack n' slash"

GOW 3 was epic! Bayonetta comes second!

So D1 wasn't really "hack n' slash" as there was only the warrior...?

Maybe it's just me. I just don't see Dungeon Crawlers as Hack n' Slash in the same sense as games like DMC, Ninja Gaiden, GOW, Bayonetta and the like. Those games combat mechanics are centrally designed around melee (especially with bladed weapons, hence the "hacking and slashing" ). But most isometric DCs allow for broader and diverse combat styles, from archery to the multitude of magic, both as projectiles and AOE attacks.

God of War 3 :)

I didn't play any of the others besides Darksiders.

I tried DMC4, DMC, and Bayonetta. I didn't really like those though.

God of War 3, not a big fan of hack n slash games but I liked the graphics and story of this one. I still want to play Darksiders 2 though.

#26 Edited by AdobeArtist (22883 posts) -

Speaking of Darksiders, I heard how the second game is overall better than the first. But for the story, how necessary is it to play DS1 before DS2?

#27 Posted by XboxDone74 (2047 posts) -

God of War 3 is the only answer.

For me it's NG2. Despite some known frame rate issues, nothing could touch the sheer elation of NG2's combat once things get rolling. Also rocket spamming enemies super-suck.
