Everyone has their favorite genres, and for me that genre was always the JRPG. A genre that most Westerners misunderstand as of being hyper-active with cutscenes *even though most JRPG's don't have that many cutscenes if any at all, you can thank Square-Enix for that* or that they have "shallow" depth  *even though they contain the most complex battle systems around. However there's always been a genre that intrested me. That's right the WRPG. It seems totally opposite from the games I like to play. My first taste was the battle system in FFXII, it resembled KOTOR as some say. I presonally hated the combat system as it totally took all the skill away from the game. Anyway I decided to ignore that, soI decided to give it a try with a game known as "Oblivion". Now this game was fun......for about 2 days then I got bored to death. However, even though it is credited to being "the greatest RPG of all-time" by reviewers, many fans say that it was extremely inferior to Morrowwind. So I'm deciding to give this genre another go. My question to all of you *PC Gamers only*  is what is the best WRPG out there. One to say if I tried this I've tried the best. One to get me an understanding of the genre.

P.S. I'm also planning on purchasing Deus Ex for $10 on STEAM, should I do it?

If you have never played Fallout 1 or 2. Get them. NOW.

I also recommend Jade Empire for PC. Superior version.

Gothic 3 is a good game, if you got the hardware. Try Morrowind, the graphics aren't good but it is a good game.

Note to those saying "fallout" aren't those games a little old. I want to play something that's the standard, I mean something that's what PC WRPG's are now. You know what I mean?

Oblivion if you're willing to suffer from the downgrade gameplay wise. There are tons of mods though such as Fransicos which fixe a lot of the dumbed down features.

Well, if you want something more recent, then go with the other two I suggested. There are those who love and hate Jade Empire, but everyone I know, even those who play games every once in a while, adore KOTOR. Seriously, one of the best gaming experiences I've had in my lifetime. Don't rule out other people's suggestions, but do NOT miss KOTOR.

for the love of god yes, get deus ex (deus ex 1 mind....deus ex 2 was a bit meh). DE1 is, imho, the best game ever made....ever. its not an rpg like KOTR.....its fairly different. it was one fo the first games to successfully mix genres such as RPG and FPS. it has a great story, great characters and is really really immersive. it starts out badly but once u enter unatco headquarters u know that this game is something quite special (well i did anyway).

another game u might be interested in is anachranox. its a bit closer to JRPGs and is bloddy hilarious.

...I honestly found them nothing alike. KOTOR's battle system looks realtime, but it is a variant of turn-based combat. You have the option to halt time after every attack, ala the way almost every single JRPG has done, or use the 'real-time' combat, which keeps the combat more cinematic and fluid.

Also, Hellgate is an obvious must have as well, not to mention, you could even call it Diablo 3, being that the same people are making it, Flagship Studios, which are all ex-blizzard folks. Garnet from the 1up show, spoke very highly of it 2 weeks back, as he was apparently playing it with the devs....Bill Roper to be exact.  Out of all the games coming this year, Hellgate's right there at the top of the list, and if it turns out to be the Killer app on the PC, I wouldn't mind paying for it as an MMO.

has a lot of memorable characters and the story is freaking good. I wouldnt be surprised if they ever made a movie based on this game. I cant say much about KOTOR 2, but seems like alot of ppl disagree with me on this one. Jade empire is made by the same ppl, well the 1st one and it is similar to KOTOR except battle system is real time. Sometimes i wish KOTOR had the Jade empire battle system.

That's because it's a niche genre. And a niche genre that sells well infact. It's a genre that's dedicated soley to the hardcore. So I guess that's why there is no standard.

Also is Hellgate: London an MMO or  a single player WRPG?

It doesn't stand out graphically and it never really did. But as far as gameplay and story is concerned, it is still one of the best out there. For $10 you are getting a lot.  There is only one person that you must kill in the entire game, this is the level of choice that is available.

It's one of the best games ever, if not THE best game. If you're that worried about graphics, there's a HD project that's almost finished. Try it out.

Get Dues Ex, but not on steam. I got it on steam only to find out steam had been hacked and every ones credit card details were online to hackers, thus £600 pound of mine goes missing (I got it back, the bank knew there was a problem, a tad fishy that I drew out money in my name in maylasia and England at the same time, the guy has been nicked.)

Don't risk buying anything off steam, other people were not as lucky.

I've never had a problem with STEAM, in fact I would reccomend it to anyone. For your information, Valve doesn't keep people's Credit cards on file, hence why you have to give it to them everytime you make a transaction, thus making it impossible for anyone to capture a database. The cards stolen and financial information were for their Cafe program they have , which they keep and store information,  and not end users.

My mistake, the hacker claimed he had the credit card info but he only hacked the Cyber Café billing system.

It just seemed ironic that this happend the exact same time I was victim to credit card fraud.

Taste like this is what elevates a mere human to a moderator. Yeah though.. Planescape: Torment, Fallout 1 & 2, Baldur's Gate 1 & 2.. those games are utterly awesome in storyline. The gameplay you may love, you may hate. The only hitch you're almost sure to run into is that the graphics are outdated on all of those today, considering most are almost a decade old. BG's hand-painted backgrounds are still easier on the eyes than Fallout and PS-T. KOTOR... the battle system is a lot like FFXII in practice with the default settings, yeah. Real-time appearance (though it's based on turn-based combat, 1 combat 'round' every 6 seconds, as almost every D20/DnD-based game since BG has been), and the combat can almost play itself if you set all the AI scripts up right. The impression I got is that Squeenix was trying to emulate KOTOR's real-time+turn-based system. KOTOR looks nice enough that graphics are still not an issue, and there's lots of voice-acting for not as much reading. VTM: Bloodlines is completely unlike most every other RPG on this list in that it's almost a FPS, but it also is an awesome RPG IMO. It's much more focused and detailed than Oblivion, if the bland characters or somewhat open storyline were what turned you off. NWN and NWN2 are probably not your taste. They're very heavily modded games that tend to rely heavily on the modding community and multiplayer to make them awesome. They're actually similar to BG and PS-T I guess, but they just don't 'feel' as good in combat to me.. I still own both and all the expansions to NWN1. :) Jade Empire is more like a focused Fable with lots of conversation, from what I've played (haven't finished it yet). The combat's decidedly action-y. The big draw of almost all of those games is creating your own character, doing things the way you want to within the story arc - which is generally pretty epic and sweeping. In Fallout 2, you can literally become a porn star (though it's tough, rather specific on the stats and charisma :D). You can be a beefy fighter, a nimble gunslinger, or a sneaky sniper that more or less takes out someone with every bullet. Or someone that can't even really fight worth a damn, but can talk his way out of most situations while relying on the beefy native with a sledgehammer behind you for the muscle. In KOTOR you can enter a Sith academy as an open force of the Light side and battle everything every step of the way, join as a dark side and rise legitimately within the ranks by backstabbing everybody you encounter, or carefully tread a gray area in between the two. In BG2 you can play as broken multi-classes that backstab enemy mages so hard they explode on the first hit. :D
