The best open world game of last year has sold 10 million copies across all platforms worldwide.

What a remarkable comeback for the series this has been.

Saints Row 4 was by far the best open world game last year.

Still need to finish ACIV.

Anything that isn't GTA5 was the best open world game last year.

Yeah if your perception of good and sense of humor is that of a 12 year old I suppose it would be.

Well deserved. Black Flag was a ton of fun; lacking in the assassins department but otherwise fantastic.

For comparison's sake, what are the sales of previous games in the series?

well it did sell on more platforms (ahem PS4 & X1) and was practically a launch title, so not so surprised. AC3 sold pretty well last year too.

No. That's where you are wrong. The game is nothing like that. There's some silly stuff in it, but the writing is a lot more clever than having 3 protagonists yell '****' every five seconds.

From IGN, so take it as you will:

Ubisoft today announced its earnings for the third fiscal quarter, and among the highlights are sales figures for Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, which come in lower than those of Assassin's Creed III during the same span the year prior.

During the company's third quarter, which ended December 31, 2013, Ubisoft reports 10 million copies of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag were sold in. Note that this is not the number of units sold through to consumers, but instead the number sold to retailers.

The game was described as having "excellent momentum," although this number is actually less than the sold-in number for Assassin's Creed III -- 12 million units -- during the same span in 2013. This is despite Black Flag being available on more platforms, thanks to the launch of Xbox One and PlayStation 4, than its predecessor.

I just use previous quarterly reports haha

Anyway, it's a remarkably consistently high selling series When it's lowest selling installment sold 7 million units worldwide, you know it's a series that sells well.

I guess AC IV was never going to sell as many as ACIII, presumably people have become wary of the franchise after the disappointing AC III

I mean, I'd be pissed, but the games have all usually been very high quality and fun, so I'm not complaining.

Considering that it's on at least six different platforms I kind of expected a little more. Personally, after Revelations and III I nearly passed on buying it, but after seeing glowing reviews and a black friday sale for twenty bucks I went it.

I'd say naval combat saved it. The story was definitely more entertaining than the last two as well, but I'd disagree with those saying it's one of the best entires in the series. It's sorta in the middle in my book. I preferred 1, 2 and Brotherhood. But it was better than III, Liberation and Revelations. But it's really only because of the naval combat, story and making the sidequests have a points.

The combat is still awful, the tailing missions are lame and the side missions do become a bit repetitive.

I think people are losing interest. Only like three of my friends got it. Unless they overhaul the gameplay and/or go to a really interesting setting I'm probably skipping the next entry. Going back to the pirate setting wont cut it either.

Well, I'm surely having more fun with it than I did Brotherhood and III (although I like both games *flame shield, especially for the latter*), so it has to be well deserved.

I don't understand how can people enjoy a game in which you hide (underwater stealth...) against sharks (as if sharks could only see you rofl). Ass Creed is dumb.

I'd have to completely disagree. It was full of bugs, the main quest was really short and the side missions got really repetitive which made up a bulk of the game if you went through doing the loyalty mission stuff. I'd say both GTA V and Assassin's Creed IV were both better but I personally only felt like both were an 8/10

The last numbers we have are from their last quarterly report, which was 1 million for Rayman, 1.8 million for Blacklist.

I will try to make a friend buy it so he borrows me the game after he's done but i know very well what to expect. Assassinations in this game (and combat in general) is what i cannot stand, shark thingy was just something i fund really dumb.

The combat and assassinations are the weakest part, but the game as a whole is just so much fun. The good parts far outstrip the bad ones.

Honestly, I encountered like 2 bugs. Granted, I didn't play it on launch.

I didn't care much about the repetitiveness considering the powers and weapons were awesome. I was okay with the sidemissions because they weren't the ones from previous games(besides fraud and genki bowl). Always thought most of that sidestuff was more infuriating than fun.

As far as length goes, it took me around 20 hours. That's been the case for every SR game for me.

As far as length goes, it took me around 20 hours. That's been the case for every SR game for me.

I literally had to restart the game around twenty times because of the amount of game breaking bugs I encountered. And that's just the game breaking bugs.

I didn't play the other Saint Row games as much as IV because I only rented them, so I wasn't as familiar with how old or new the missions were, but they still got really repetitive to me half way through the game.

I beat Saints Row IV in about twenty two hours and the loyalty and character side missions had me do pretty much if not every single side activity on the map. There wasn't much left to do in the game after I beat and most of what I did was the side missions because of the loyalty stuff, so very little of it felt like unique scenarios. Probably half my playthrough or less was dedicated to the actual story. Saints Row 3 on the other hand took me nearly thirty hours to beat and I didn't spend much time on the side activities, the game was strong enough to stand on the main story.

Having the character sidequests just be the side missions that were sitting on the map already felt lazy and cheap to me. I would preferred that all their mission be unique and different, otherwise it's just dressing for the side activities.

Personally, I preferred Saints Row 2 and 3 way more to this. It's still a fun game, it would have made for a good sequel to Crackdown, actually. But the amount of bugs I experienced was unacceptable.

Honestly, I couldn't stand playing this game.

After playing all of the AC games, you just can't help but feel absolutely tired and exhausted with the entire series. Sure, the naval combat was fun and all; but after a while, you're still doing repetitive activities. And oh goodness, the bugs and the crappy A.I. alongside sensitive controls when its comes to "parkour-ing" or trying to be stealth.

A LOT needs to be improved, especially the "level of awareness of the enemy AI" and combat.

Worse part for me is some of the annoying bugs.

The one i encountered the most was that if you try and plunder an enemy ship, and you jump onto the side of the enemy ship and start climbing up onto the ship; enemies would surround you while you climb and attack you - causing you to fall over the ship and swim around onto the side to get on.

Really, just some of these things are just really annoying and has been present in the series since I could remember.

After spending anywhere from 6 - 10 hours, I just had enough of feeling and abandoned it.

Another reason i disliked it was the fact that it wasn't even an Assassin game whatsoever. I get that the series has always been about moving to different historical periods, and i'm well aware of how the story unfolds in second half and how Kenway's character develops and opinion as an assassin changes - but it just didn't cut it for me.

And even after all i said, i'll probably be excited for the next AC game knowing that i always look forward on seeing what new historical period is being brought into the series.

I just wish the game was as exciting as the reveal is.

But in all honesty, i've probably asscreeded myself too much and should probably stay away from the series and give it a rest.

Considering the huge hype around AC3, it's not surprising that it was the best-selling game in the franchise.

"The game was described as having "excellent momentum," although this number is actually less than the sold-in number for Assassin's Creed III -- 12 million units -- during the same span in 2013."

Ah, alright then

Yeah if your perception of good and sense of humor is that of a 12 year old I suppose it would be.

No. That's where you are wrong. The game is nothing like that. There's some silly stuff in it, but the writing is a lot more clever than having 3 protagonists yell '****' every five seconds.

SR4 and SR3 were both awesome. The girl protagonist is especially awesome. She is well written, well acted, and a great strong character. Plus go look up her fangirling over Burt Reynolds on youtube. People who are judging it by SR2's poop cannons just don't get it and have already made up their minds. It also happens to have some of the best controls out of any sandbox game. GTA5 and 4 are both gathering dust somewhere in my closet.

The first half hour I hated it. I gave it a second chance..........then a third. Now I am hooked. I wasn't in the mood for the same ole AC but the vast freedom overshadows all the repetitive issues that I had. Playing some more soon!

I had completely the opposite experience. I thought taking over the naval forts would never get old, but it does. So does shark/whale hunting, boarding ships and having to blow up powder kegs for no reason at all, repairing your ship mid-battle, and my god, the naval fleet battle mini-game is possibly the worst mini-game I've ever played. Some of the shipwrecks are really cool. Others are really lame. I do like how there are several towns to go see, but once you've seen them, there just isn't much substance.

Ughhh it angers me that I can't play this game until I've finished Brotherhood, Revelations and AC3.

If you are playing these games for the story, don't bother. They are terrible and confusing as hell. AC3 took a big dump on the story itself, so it really doesn't matter anymore. AC4 hardly takes the future stuff seriously and is just goofy overall.

I think you should play Brotherhood because its a good game. You can skip Revelations and AC3.

Really good game. I'm hoping Ubisoft build on it, instead of cocking it up, much like they did after ACII.

GTA V > Assassins Creed IV

I'll pick it up in the bargain bin for $10 at Walmart in a couple of months though.

So just you suck a video games. It was really easy to avoid the the enemies that try to knock you of the side of the ship and you call it a bug.
