I like the premise which is to add diversity to the shooting by giving you more options and ways to go about killing your foes, but unfortunately, barrels are getting a bit old. I would much rather see destructible environments which challenge you to use your head to bring down your enemies, rather than just shooting the red thing. A couple of games have touched upon this, but not to a great extent, so we're still seeing the exploding barrels/gas canisters.
You try shooting a barrel of oil or gunpowder and see what happens. nothing, a bullet piercing a barrel is not enough to cause a spark, never mind enough to ignite the barrel's contents even with tracer rounds its rare[QUOTE="Richymisiak"]what's more annoying is that there are no such things as explosive barrels in real life -PuLse
Explosive barrels are ok if done right. Crysis would be an example of how they are done right. The barrels are in places you would expect them to be for things like refueling. ect.

I liked the gas tanks in Far Cry 2, where you would shoot them, and then a flame would eject from them causing it to shoot around on the ground like a rocket a little bit, setting all the grass and wood in a given area on fire before exploding. Much more satisfying way to take down enemies than having them stand right next to a barrel. It still doesn't make any sense (bullets don't cause sparks when they hit metal) but at least it's not boring and stationary.
I agree, its just lazy design and shows a lack of imagination imo.
Like when I was playing the KZ2 demo,I couldn't believe my eyes, there were dozens of "exploding" barrels lieing around and the helghast soldiers were just standing right next to them without a care in the world. Seriously after 5 years and tens of millions of dollars and GG still force this clicheupon us? :|

I remember that episode; I was disappointed with the results.[QUOTE="Richymisiak"]what's more annoying is that there are no such things as explosive barrels in real life Richymisiak
All explosive barrels in games should be replaced with explosive boxes of explosives, much more realistic, and more explosive!!!
And actually make sense, a barrel filled with gas wouldn't explode the way they do in some gamesAll explosive barrels in games should be replaced with explosive boxes of explosives, much more realistic, and more explosive!!!

[QUOTE="kyussman1973"]And actually make sense, a barrel filled with gas wouldn't explode the way they do in some games though few explosive explode when shot at only extremely volatile ones such as nitro-glycerine I believe (and only if it had been left in the sun for a few years) would explode on contact and i don't think people want to see AI so dumb they stand next to contact explosive :)All explosive barrels in games should be replaced with explosive boxes of explosives, much more realistic, and more explosive!!!
