Is it wrong to call the PS4 a "4k capable" console? Probably not, due it being able to run some games at native 4k, this is what gets Sony out off a false advertisement law suit.

That being said, is it honest? Probably not.

No gaming console is capable of running games 4K/30 fps yet.

And it's misleading to lead the general consumer believe that your PS4 pro is magically doing so.

It's about as misleading as Microsoft and Sony saying that 360, PS3, Xbox One and PS4 are full HD consoles when not every game is running at 1080p. The Pro is definitely capable of running 4K games, just not all.

It is misleading, they should state the native resolution before upscaling not to be misleading.

Checkerboard rendering is not up-scaled nor it's native. Checkerboard rendering still has 4K framebuffer with odd or even pixels being skipped in a checkerboard layout. The missing pixels are then interpolated by neighbouring pixels and temporal (using past frame buffers). Odd or even rendered pixels are native.

Checkerboard rendering superior to Kill Zone Shadowfall's line based neighbouring interpolation and upscaling (copy pixels to fit target resolution).

Rendering is all about creating the pixel information.
