Amiibo Sales Top 5.7 Million Units Worldwide

Iwata said Nintendo sold about 5.7 million of its new Amiibo figurines worldwide since late November, giving an early indication of whether the company’s strategy of selling toys will be successful. Iwata spoke at a briefing in Osaka today.

So far I got Mario, Yoshi, Diddy Kong and, well when you have a 10 year old daughter you just can´t escape, Princess Peach. Not that I plan to play with those, I just collect them.

I am waiting for the Toad amiibo to release. After that I might be done unless they release a Captain Toad or Adventure Toadette amiibo.

Toad would be awesome, but is his Amiibo on the road map for release? Other than Captain Toad, I'm not sure they will release a Toad Amiibo. Unless I'm missing something...

I like my amiibos. I have four and I'm willing to buy new ones when I see them used with a new game. For example, I'm getting my kirby amiibo along with rainbow curse. I fully expect to get a yoshi amiibo with wooly world. Etc etc etc.

Amiibo are not my cup of tea, but kudos to Nintendo on there success making MONEY. If it ain't about the money, you know the drill.

I have a problem.

Why do people buy amiibos? I understood why people bought skylanders, they were actually cool. The entire skylanders experience revolved around the collectable toys. What exactly do amiibos offer? An trainable ai character for smash and mini dlcs for other games? How is that exciting?

From my understanding, the Amiibo you train in Smash Bros really starts to challenge you and is tougher to fight than level 9 computer players. Don't quote me though. I haven't bought one or researched them terribly.

It's essentially physical DLC. You buy the collectible figure (a perk for many people) and get access to a feature in the game that people without the figure don't get.

It's really a genius strategy on Nintendo's part, because of all their iconic characters and the complete lack of quality, official figures in the figurine market.

Don't have Wii U, but I'm getting one if Zero Suit Samus comes out.

It's like buying MTG cards without playing them. Or buying WH figures.

I'm not surprised considering most of the Amiibos are sold out online for pre-order and I hardly see any in stores nowadays.

Good for Nintendo but damn it, bring more Gamecube controller adapters!

It helps that the characters have such incredible recognition in the market already.

Well you can also put them on display on your shelf or something, to show anyone who comes to visit you that you're a big nerd.

Well, the content is BONUS in games already packed to the brim with features. Plus having one amiibo work across several games gives them greater value since DLC usually just works in one game at a time. And on top of that, the content is superfluous.

That is pretty great. I've been meaning to buy more of these, I've only got Link. Should probably get Zelda next.

Don't think Sony and Microsoft aren't looking into it. This is a huge cash cow that can't be ignored, not after they see these numbers. They'll find a way to not make it look like toys. But they will find a way to do their own version of it. Guaranteed.

@Bread_or_Decide: If I want to use the fire emblem characters in Codename STEAM, I have to pay 48 dollars in addition to the price for the game. In an SRPG like that, characters are everything. These assets are already done but I gotta pay extra for them. Do you know how ridiculous that is? That is EA/Capcom level BS. If I want to get the spinner and whatever weapon they gave Zelda in Hyrule Warriors, that's 24 dollars. For two brand spanking new fucking weapons. Amiibos are cute figurines but they're a cash grab

Also, link goes for $12 as well, so you don't have to pay $24. And again. this isn't a ONE time use, you can use him in smash bros. and also in mario kart 8. Again, one purchase, for multiple games.

$12 for years of additional content in multiple titles isn't really all that bad. People pay much more for much less. Yes they are meant to earn cash, like any other product. So using cash grab to criticise them is redundant and pointless.

This is not on the level of capcom because all the extra features are cosmetic and don't effect the games in any way. They are bonus to the content of the game, and pretty tiny bonuses at that.
